2 . Ways to Brighten a Cloudy Day

When I was a small child, I’d curl up on my parents’ bed after the sunshine had warmed it. It was a pleasant place of peace and safety that I struggled to find in later years.

1     As I learn to enjoy those memories of a regular life, I found more smiles and sunshine than I’d ever thought possible. Try one of the followings for the best result!

Get outside, move and breathe.

Fresh air and sunshine can have a magical effect on your feelings. Sometimes when you are feeling down, all that you need to do is simply go outside and breathe.     2     So if you start to feel down, go outside, let the sun hit your face, go for a hike or whatever.

Do something nice for a complete stranger.

Buy a coffee, pay a bill, give a smile and a “thank you” when none is required. You may even reach out and help strangers who live far away from you.     3     It also feels very, very good.

Laugh from your stomach.

4     And the good feeling that you get when you laugh remains with you even after the laughter disappears. A moment spent in full enjoyment of laughing is a great way to release stress and refuel your smile.

Try something not included in your normal life.

Most of us eat from a very short list of food. Eating something entirely different will do more than expand your sense of taste.     5

We need to live each moment wholeheartedly, with all our senses. Only in this way will we find what a wonderful world it actually is!

A.Choose seasonal, healthy foods like fresh fruit instead of high-fat ones.
B.It will help keep your sense of adventure alive!
C.Each day includes moments that can be deeply enjoyed or carelessly ignored.
D.You know the kind of laugh that shakes your whole body?
E.Being happy is about taking the time to work towards your goal.
F.Giving will open you up to a world of kindness.
G.Movement and exercise is also a great way to feel better.

3 . When something goes wrong, it can be very satisfying to say, “Well, it’s so-and-so’s fault.” or “I know I’m late, but it’s not my fault; the car broke down.” It is probably not your fault, but once you form the habit of blaming (责怪) somebody or something else for a bad situation, you are a loser. You have no power and could do nothing that helps change the situation. However, you can have great power over what happens to you if you stop focusing on whom to blame and start focusing on how to improve the situation. This is the winner’s key to success.

Winners are great at overcoming problems. For example, if you were late because your car broke down, maybe you need to have your car examined more regularly. Or, you might start to carry along with you the useful phone numbers, so you could call for help when in need. For another example, if your co-worker causes you problems on the job for lack of responsibility or ability, find ways of dealing with his irresponsibility or inability rather than simply blame the person. Ask to work with a different person, or don’t rely on this person. You should accept that the person is not reliable and find creative ways to work successfully regardless of(不管) how your co-worker fails to do his job well.

This is what being a winner is all about — creatively using your skills and talents so that you are successful no matter what happens. Winners don’t have fewer problems in their lives; they have just as many difficult situations to face as anybody else. They are just better at seeing those problems as challenges and opportunities to develop their own talents. So, stop focusing on “whose fault it is.” Once you are confident about your power over bad situations, problems are just stepping stones for success.

1. What can we learn about winners?
A.They have responsible and able co-workers.B.They blame themselves rather than others.
C.They focus on solving problems.D.They seldom meet with difficulties in life.
2. How does the author mainly prove his view?
A.By giving examples.B.By making comparison.
C.By providing research results.D.By using opinions from others.
3. What do problems mean to winners?
A.Excuses for their failures.B.Chances for self-development.
C.Challenges to their co-workers.D.Keys to the final success.
4. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A.A Winner’s AchievementB.A Winner’s Problem
C.A Winner’s OpportunityD.A Winner’s Secret

4 . In the summer of 2017 I had a firework explode in my right hand and ended up losing my index finger, middle finger, end of my ring finger and end of my thumb. All in all, it was still a good day because I was still alive and knew it could have been a lot worse.

When I got to the hospital my parents were already supporting me as soon as possible. A day later my brother flew across the country leaving his job to be there for me. Seeing that really opened up for me that family is the best thing you can have-but that is not why I’m writing this story.

I am doing this for people to see that the biggest competitor in life is that person who looks back at you in the mirror. In this world you are what you believe you are. If you want to tell yourself that you are stupid or you are not good-looking, that’s what you are going to be. But if you look in the mirror and want to tell yourself you are great or you are going to make a difference in this world, then make it happen.

Ever since this accident, I had some rough moments but I learned to see the bright side of it. I learned not to regret it because it made me the person I am today. And that person is a 17-year-old kid who believes that if you work hard enough, be what you want to be, and have faith in yourself, anything is possible. Everything happens for a reason. For that reason, I still work the rest of my life achieving my dreams and trying to be known as the person I see myself as, because the reward at the end will be greater than anyone can possibly imagine.

1. What happened after the author was sent to hospital?
A.He felt rather worse there.B.He had a big operation there.
C.His family came to be with him.D.Something even worse happened.
2. What can be inferred from paragraph 3?
A.You should change your attitude to yourself.B.Don’t believe the image in the mirror.
C.People will feel upset sometimes.D.The way you treat life matters a lot.
3. What does the underlined part “that person” in the last paragraph refer to?
A.The author himself.B.The author’s brother.
C.The author’s friend.D.Anyone else.
4. Which words best describe the author?
A.Helpful and intelligent.B.Positive and ambitious.
C.Adventurous and considerate.D.Modest and hard-working.

5 . How to deal with your homework

Write it down.     1     Always be sure to write down all the homework so you won’t forget anything.

Create a homework station. Find somewhere comfortable and quiet to do your homework.     2     It will take twice as long to get the homework done. Shut off your cell phone, log off (退出) your computer (unless you need it for your homework) and close the door.

Do homework as early as possible. Don’t leave homework to the last minute.     3     The earlier you start your homework, the sooner you will finish! Do all your homework as early as you can, so you don’t have a pile of ( 一 堆 ) homework the next day.

4     Think about how long it will take you to complete homework for each subject. For example: English-ten minutes, science-ten minutes, math-forty minutes, history-twenty minutes.

Treat yourself. You can easily get tired by sitting through an hour or two of homework without stopping. Once you finish homework for a subject, take a small break (no more than 15 minutes). Either taking a walk or finding something to eat will do. But do not turn on the TV, or you’ll never go back to your study.     5

A.Use your time wisely.
B.Start as soon as you get home.
C.Start with your hardest homework.
D.Do not burn the midnight oil, either.
E.Never do your homework in front of the TV.
F.After short breaks, return to finish the rest of your homework.
G.Keep a homework notebook where you record all your homework.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了“我”在开车时发现了一只海龟,在帮助它时却伤害了它,所以“我”决定向专业人士请教如何正确地帮助海龟的故事。

6 . One night, as I was driving down the road, I found something was sitting in the middle of the road. A few seconds later, I realized I was looking at a large turtle (海龟). Afraid of it being crashed by cars, so I pulled over, ran across the road and dragged the turtle to safety. But I’d made one big mistake.

I had heard that the best way to pick up a turtle without hurting it was picking it by the tail in order not to get bitten. So I’d made that big mistake. While the turtle turned out OK generally, I was determined to figure out how to move a turtle properly. I needed to find someone who dealt with turtles. I found the Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre. I talked to Dr. Sue, its Executive and Medical Director.

Dr. Sue told me that the organization dealt with a number of aspects of turtle conservation, including rescue, settlement, birth programs, research, and education. Sue explained that southern Ontario is home to a vast majority of turtles in Canada, but is also one of the vastest road networks of the country.

“Ninety percent of injured turtles brought in are caused by cars. These turtles spend a lot of time on land. And they do travel many kilometers on land for a variety of reasons, to find a nesting spot, or to hang out for the summer or winter. Turtles know where they want to go. So, just keep them going in the direction they want to go and you may have saved a turtle’s life,” Dr. Sue said.

Once an injured turtle arrives at the center, there are medical facilities (设备) ready to go, including an X-ray machine. That’s when the team gets to work with healing injuries, and help their patient.

1. Why did the author stop the car?
A.To help the turtle.B.To see the thing clearly.
C.To prevent a car accident.D.To find something good.
2. What happened to the turtle?
A.It got hurt by people before.B.It was injured a little bit.
C.It was run over by a car.D.It lost its direction.
3. What did Dr. Sue suggest at last?
A.Leaving the turtles alone.
B.Making Ontario home to turtles.
C.Changing the road conditions.
D.Helping turtles find nesting spots.
4. What does the underlined word “patient” refer to in the last paragraph?
A.The director.B.The driver.
C.The author.D.The turtle.

文章大意:本文是说明文。本文讲述了一些对抗懒惰的方法,如调整睡眠,坚持锻炼,平衡膳食等,也告诫我们不能被懒惰打败,否则一生不能成事,没有收获。

8 . Lazy people will never gain anything in life. However, laziness can be defeated once a few changes have been made in your mind.

One way to fight laziness is to get enough sleep. Many people lack sleep constantly, since they stay up too late and get up too early to prepare for work. These people have little motivation once they arrive home. Laziness works hand in hand with a lack of motivation and a tendency to put off things. By adjusting your sleep schedule to provide a few more hours of meaningful rest, you can fight laziness throughout the day.

Another way to fight laziness is to change your mind from passive to active. Some people treat their lives as if they were pushed from task to task. Others take a more positive approach, viewing each task as a challenge they must overcome alone. Laziness appears when you no longer feel in charge of your own mind.

Some people fight laziness by removing the temptations that surround them. A television in the living room may provide entertainment, but watching too much TV often contributes to laziness. Create a reward system for yourself, just as parents do for a child. Complete a few tasks and reward yourself with what you enjoy, such as a good dinner or a film.

Laziness can also be a lasting problem at home. Couples and children may all have different energy levels, but laziness can be spread if not dealt with immediately. To fight family laziness, set an example. Be the first to collect and wash dishes after a meal. Others in the home may eventually follow your example and perform their own task. It is difficult to practice laziness when you are surrounded by motivated (积极的) people.

Finally, taking exercise regularly can help you fight laziness. Enough exercise and a balanced diet can help you to develop a healthy lifestyle, thus enabling you to have more energy and help lift your spirits.

1. How many ways have been mentioned in this passage to defeat laziness?
A.3B.4C.5D.6
2. According to Paragraph 2, we can know that__________.
A.people who don’t get enough seep must be lazy
B.people who lack of motivation must be lazy
C.people who stay up too late and get up too early must be lazy
D.people who adjust their seep schedule mustn’t be lazy
3. The underlined word “temptations” is closest in meaning to__________.
A.ExcitementsB.Happiness
C.AttractionsD.entertainments
4. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A.How to fight laziness?
B.Laziness does great harm to our life.
C.Lazy people will never gain anything.
D.Laziness can be defeated.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。针对进入高中后如何好好学习,文中介绍了几种方法。

9 . After entering high school, you must wonder how to study well. Here are some good skills for you.

Go to class

If you want to do well at school, going to class is the first step in studying well. If you miss classes, you will miss what the teacher thinks is important; as a result, you’ll miss what is the most likely to end up on the test.     1

Take good notes

Try not to write down everything.     2     Write down unfamiliar terms (术语). After class, review your notes as soon as possible. You can fill in details that you missed and review the material while it is still fresh on your mind.

    3

If you are struggling in class, talk to your teacher. He or she may be able to give you more help before or after class. Most teachers have little sympathy (同情) for students who just become worried about failing during the last few weeks of the grading period.

Take part in class discussions

In order to learn more in class, it is helpful to take part in class discussions. Asking questions and having eye contact with your teachers and classmates can increase your focus during the class discussion.     4     This helps you make your point clear in class.

Form study groups

5     Make sure that everyone is familiar with the material because you do not want to spend time re-teaching material to people who do not understand it. Be careful! Sometimes group sessions (上课时间) can become chatting sessions.

A.Talk to your teacher if you need help.
B.Don’t be late for your class.
C.Get students together who want to do well in class.
D.All you need is to put down the main points in your own words.
E.If the material is difficult, you’d better read it before class.
F.You should write down all the new terms.
G.So if you want to study well, go to every class.

Good morning, everyone. It is my honor to stand here and share with something about traveling. Which I’d like to convey is that to travel is also to learn. Take my journey to Xi’an for example. Previously, I do learn something about the city from books and TV programs. Therefore, I didn’t know how wonderful it was until he was there in person. When traveling, we can feel the surrounding with our own eyes, noses and so on, thus broadening our horizons. The picture took on the Great Wall is good reminder of my happy days during my stay in Xi’an. So everyone, seize every chance or you will start an amazed journey to learn.
