When I was 10, my friend Sydney suffered from a brain cancer. Sydney fought against it, but the cancer did not respond to the treatment, and could not be removed. Sydney died at the age of 11.

After her death, I felt sad and discouraged. I decided to turn these negative emotions into positive actions. When I was 15 years old, I founded the Pink Polka Dots Guild (PPD) with two friends. My goal is to raise enough money to find a cure for brain cancer, which is the second most common cancer in children.

Over the years, PPD had held fundraisers (募捐活动) across the city. The first Pink Polka Dots Guild event, a garage sale, just raised $900, but our latest fundraiser, the 2012 golf tournament, brought in over $73,000. In the past five years, we have raised almost a million dollars to help do a research on removing brain cancer.

I’ve been shocked by the public recognition that PPD has earned. It received an award from President. This great honour raised awareness and money for our cause.

The efforts that we have made has truly helped cancer research. PPD has provided start-up funding for scientific discoveries, such as “Tumor Paint”, which illuminates (照射) cancerous cells so that doctors can remove them with amazing accuracy. The discovery appeared in Time Magazine. I was very proud to have helped fund the research of this life-saving technology.

Pink Polka Dots has inspired me to be an activist. My experience has taught me that with devotion, it is possible to make a difference in the world. The determination that Pink Polka Dots set off in me has carried over to all aspects of my life, making me a competitive speaker and a devoted volunteer.

8 . Modern technology has a strong influence on every part of our life, including the education in the universities.

Ashok Goel, a professor of Georgia Institute of Technology, says he uses the Internet in almost all of the classes he teaches. Every term over 300 graduate students take his class on artificial intelligence The students never meet in person. All of the classes take place online — through a website, which lets students ask questions and complete their work from anywhere in the world.

Having hundreds of students in a class means Ashok Goel has to answer thousands of questions. He has eight teaching assistants to help him. But even that is not enough to give all the students the help they need.

So, in January, Goel had an idea. He decided to try an experiment. At the start of the spring 2016 term, he added a new member to his teaching team: Jill Watson. She was able to answer questions faster than most other teaching assistants. And she was available 24 hours a day.

It was only at the end of the term that Goel’s students learned Watson’s true identity: she was not a real person like the other teaching assistants. Jill Watson was an AI computer program.

And it seems Goel’s stories will become more common in the universities.

A website called Campus Technology publishes stories about how colleges and universities use new technology. In August, the site published a survey of over 500 professors and their use of technology. Fifty-five percent of the professors asked students to use study materials online before coming to class. And, more than 70 percent combined (使相结合) online materials and face-to-face teaching in their classrooms.

1. What can we learn from Paragraph 2?
A.Goel seldom uses the Internet in his class.B.The students take Goel’s class online.
C.Goel occasionally meets his colleagues.D.Goel’s students dislike going to college.
2. Why does Goel have many teaching assistants to help him?
A.He is not a clever professor.B.He wants to have a good sleep.
C.He does not want to give answers.D.He has no time to answer all the questions.
3. What can we know about Jill Watson?
A.She was a real person.B.She helped Goel with his work.
C.She was one of Goel’s students.D.She could ask all the questions.
4. What does the underlined word “identity” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
A.Who a person is.B.The name of a person.
C.Where a person is from.D.A person’s contribution.
5. What is the passage mainly about?
A.Ashok Goel has eight assistants to help him.
B.New technology is changing our way of living.
C.Modern technology greatly influences college education.
D.Teachers will be completely replaced by the computers.

9 . I’ve been writing for most of my life. The book Writing Without Teachers introduced me to one distinction and one practice that has helped my writing processes tremendously. The distinction is between the creative mind and the critical mind. While you need to employ both to get to a finished result, they cannot work in parallel no matter how much we might like to think so.

Trying to criticize writing on the fly is possibly the single greatest barrier to writing that most of us encounter. If you are listening to that 5th grade English teacher correct your grammar while you are trying to capture a fleeting (稍纵即逝的) thought, the thought will die. If you capture the fleeting thought and simply share it with the world in raw form, no one is likely to understand. You must learn to create first and then criticize if you want to make writing the tool for thinking that it is.

The practice that can help you past your learned bad habits of trying to edit as you write is what Elbow calls “free writing”. In free writing, the objective is to get words down on paper non-stop, usually for 15-20 minutes. No stopping, no going back, no criticizing. The goal is to get the words flowing. As the words begin to flow, the ideas will come from the shadows and let themselves be captured on your notepad or your screen.

Now you have raw materials that you can begin to work with using the critical mind that you’ve persuaded to sit on the side and watch quietly. Most likely, you will believe that this will take more time than you actually have and you will end up staring blankly at the pages as the deadline draws near.

Instead of staring at a blank start filling it with words no matter how bad. Halfway through your available time, stop and rework your raw writing into something closer to finished product. Move back and forth until you run out of time and the final result will most likely be far better than your current practices.

1. When the author says the creative mind and the critical mind “cannot work in parallel ” in the writing process, he means ______ .
A.one cannot use them at the same timeB.they cannot be regarded as equally important
C.they are in constant conflict with each otherD.no one can be both creative and critical
2. What prevents people from writing on is ______ .
A.putting their ideas in raw formB.ignoring grammatical soundness
C.attempting to edit as they writeD.trying to capture fleeting thoughts
3. What is the chief objective of the first stage of writing?
A.To organize one’s thoughts logically.B.To get one’s ideas down.
C.To choose an appropriate topic.D.To collect raw materials.
4. One common concern of writers about “ free writing ” is that ______ .
A.it overstresses the role of the creative mindB.it does not help them to think clearly
C.it may bring about too much criticismD.it takes too much time to edit afterwards
5. In what way does the critical mind help the writer in the writing process?
A.It allows him to sit on the side and observe.B.It helps him to come up with new ideas.
C.It saves the writing time available to him.D.It improves his writing into better shape.

Every child has a dream of what they want to be, right? When Renee Butts was little, her dream was to become a volunteer firefighter because her father was one. Sadly, when she was 14, her beloved father passed away and she was unable to do volunteer work with him. However, she was determined and never gave up, which makes for a good firefighter.

Now Renee is a member of the Carmel Fire Department, where she is required to be an Emergency Medical Technician. She should also be ready to deal with any emergency, like fighting a fire, dealing with a car accident or helping someone who’s sick. Sometimes she is in the driver’s seat or using the water pump. Renec works nine to eleven days a month on 24-hour shifts. She also has a family to care for, as her husband is also a busy firefighter. Dealing with housework and working so much can show her great determination.

When I asked Renee what the best part of her job is, she replied, “Helping people and the satisfaction of saving lives.” I think that shows signs of being a true hero. She’s always willing to do anything for anyone in need. Renee says that her job is frightening at times, but extremely exciting. “The worst part of my job is that I see death. Actually, sometimes, people die in the accident, for which I was very sorry,” said Renee.

I was inspired by this because I know I would be very scared to do her job and don’t know if I could handle seeing people die. With 140 people in her station, Renee is one of the only three women, but that doesn’t bother her. She says everyone gets a fair shot and they all do the same jobs.

We would never live without people like her who have the courage to risk their lives. Renee’s determination rubs off on me and helps me believe that I can do anything.

1. What’s Renee’s job in the Carmel Fire Department? (No more than 5 words)
2. What makes Renee balance between doing housework and working so much? (No more than 5 words)
3. Why does the author-think Renee Butts is a true hero? (No more than 15 words)
4. How do you understand the underlined part in Paragraph 4?(No more than 5 words)
5. What do you think of Renee? Please give your reasons. (No more than 25 words)
