4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Miss Cathy was a young woman who lived in a small town in Los Angeles. She grew up there . When she was a little girl, she was happy with a large family loving her. But now, she was all alone. Her parents died in a car accident eight years ago. Her elder brother was killed in a robbery two years ago. Her younger brother left to work in a faraway city last year.

On a hot summer night, Miss Cathy was watching TV when the program suddenly stopped. The announcer said ,“Sorry to interrupt the program. Now we are requested to broadcast an important notice from the police station. At about nine this evening, a lady named Mrs. Nigel was robbed and killed. Anyone who can supply any clue is requested to report to the police. Thank you.” The terrible news made the girl shake with fear. She got up from the sofa and listened carefully, hearing nothing except the sound of wind outside the window.   She couldn’t help looking around, but she didn’t notice that a man was already staying behind the door to the balcony. In the day, she left the door open to let in some air. Now she was so nervous that she even forgot to lock it up. The man hid himself in the darkness, standing motionlessly with a gun in his hand. He looked at the girl in the house through the glass door of the balcony, waiting a chance to break in at any time.

All of a sudden the man appeared before Miss Cathy, pointing the gun at her. The girl really didn’t know what to do. She just shook like a leaf in the wind, staring at the man in terror. The robber said to Miss Cathy, “Go to lock the door. Don’t ask for police, just put your jewellery on the table; then think over whether I shall be safe to stay up here for the night,” That made Miss Cathy even more terrified, but she tried to calm herself. She went to the door and locked it, thinking hard what to do next at the same time.

文章大意:本文为说明文,介绍了合理的屏幕时间(使用社交媒体的时间)对儿童有益。

5 . Screen time is often considered the enemy when it comes to teaching kids to be active. However, a new research found that for 9 and 10 years old children greater social media use was related to some positive effects, including increased physical activity, less family conflict (冲突) and fewer sleep problems.

The findings come from an analysis of data from about 4,500 young people and their parents collected by the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study. The study gathered information about how young people’s brains develop.

In the study, children self reported activities like watching TV, texting or visiting social media sites — and the time spent on each. They were also asked about whether they play mature (成年的) video games. They rated their time on them as never, once in a while and all the time. Kids and parents report on family conflict. Parents also kept track of how well the kids slept and filled out a checklist that assessed (评定) their children’s behavior.

The results haven’t been published yet, but are being presented Tuesday at the Research Society on Alcoholism in San Diego. Previous research has been done. largely in older kids or teenagers with less focus on younger kids. Communities and social networks can have beneficial effects, so kids who are using social media to build connections may see positive outcomes.

Do these findings mean that parents should ban TVs and sign their kids up for Twitter? Probably not. Psychologist Chris Ferguson of Stetson University says that the differences identified in the research are small.

1. What does the passage mainly about?
A.More screen time is needed by kids.
B.Screen time is the enemy of teaching kids to be active.
C.Parents should ban TVs and sign their kids up for Twitter.
D.A look at social media may have possible benefits for kids.
2. How did the researchers get the data they wanted?
A.They carried out interviews.B.They asked kids and parents to report.
C.They got the data from other scientists.D.They downloaded the data from the Internet.
3. What is Chris Ferguson’s attitude towards the findings?
A.Objective.B.Subjective.C.Supportive.D.Doubtful..
4. What is the text?
A.A novel.B.A travel guide.C.A news report.D.A book review.

6 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Mr. White was in the teachers’ office during the break time. He was correcting homework of his class when he heard someone calling him. It was Roy, a naughty boy in his class.

Roy seemed worried and upset. “Mr. White, I have lost 50 dollars! But I don’t know where I lost them,” Roy told Mr. White. Mr. White stopped what he was doing and asked for the whole thing. Roy had begged for 50 dollars from her mother to buy a new pair of basketball shoes. But he lost them and was afraid to tell his mother.

“Could you please tell my mum that my money was lost?” Roy asked Mr. White. Mr. White felt a little strange, so he asked, “Why don’t you tell your mother yourself?” Roy answered that his mother would not believe him. And then Roy asked Mr. White again to phone his mother.

“Don’t you want to find the money back?” Mr. White was curious. “But I don’t know where to find them. I think I have searched everywhere in our school. Forget it, and there is no chance to find them back.” Roy was nervous.

Mr. White looked at Roy carefully, but Roy just kept his head down, avoiding eye contact with Mr. White. Mr. White sensed something. He noticed that today Roy seemed different from before. Loss of money wouldn’t make so big a difference to him. “No, I will surely help you find them back.” Mr. White told Roy confirmedly.

In the afternoon, Mr. White said seriously in front of all his students, “Today Roy lost 50 dollars. The money was for his new shoes.” Hearing this, all students looked at Roy immediately. Roy’s face turned red and it seemed that he wanted to say something but he did not and just buried his head deep.

Observing all these, Mr. White continued to say, “Let’s help Roy find the money back, OK? I’m sure there is strength in numbers!” All students said yes with one voice. The search went on for an hour but there was no good news.

8 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

When Papa was growing up at the turn of the century in a very small village in rural northern Italy, education was for the rich. Papa was the son of a poor farmer. He dropped out of school when he was in the fifth grade. He went to work in a factory. For Papa, the world became his school. He was interested in everything. He read all the books, magazines and newspapers he could lay his hands on. Papa's great respect for learning and his sense of wonder about the outside world were carried aeross the sea with him and later passed on to his family.

"There is so much to learn," he'd remind us. "Though we're born stupid, only the stupid remain that way."

To ensure that none of his children ever fell into the trap of self-satisfaction, he insisted that we learm at least one new thing each day. He felt that there could be no fact too insignificant, and that each bit of learning made us more of a person and insured us against boredom and stagnation (停滞不前).

So Papa made a rule. Dinner time was the perfect time for sharing new things we had learned that day. It would never have occurred to us to refuse Papa a request. So when my brother and sisters and I gathered in the bathroom to clean up for dinner, the unavoidable question was, "What did you learn today?" If the answer was nothing, we didn't dare sit at the table without first finding a fact in our much-used encyclopedia (百科全书). "The population of Nepal..." etc.

Now, thoroughly clean and armed with our fact for the day, we were ready for dinner. It was also a time to review the activities of the day. The events we stated, no matter how insignificant, were never taken lightly. Mama and Papa always listened carefully and were ready with some comments, often deep and right to the point. One dialogue ended, and immediately another began. Papa's attention would settle upon one of us.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了作者与丈夫忠诚于不同的球队造成了小小的分歧,但最终靠一个邻近体育场的小公寓解决了问题。

9 . I love outings to the ballpark. My ears perk (竖起) up at the whack of a precisely hit ball, my nose enjoys the scent of hot dogs, and my heart jumps at the possibility of winning it all. But a few years ago I discovered the best way to watch a baseball game might be not to watch at all.

This discovery arose the year I got married. The first apartment my husband and I rented could charitably be called “charming”, although “diminutive” better describes it. But to young newlyweds, the 41-square-metre apartment felt sublime. The best thing about the apartment, in my opinion, was its location a quarter-mile from baseball’s oldest stadium, Boston’s Fenway Park.

The only problem? My husband was not a Red Sox fan. I hadn’t anticipated this stumbling block. He was an avid sports fan, and he’d only just moved to Boston. Surely a love of the hometown team would seep into his heart as naturally as fish take to water.

My hopes faded as the season began. A Seattle Mariners hat remained firmly planted on his head. Matching Red Sox T-shirts earned a veto.

As newlywed disagreements go, this one wasn’t horrible. Plenty of couples flourish with dueling team loyalties. But a worry nagged: If he couldn’t root for the Red Sox, would he ever truly make Boston home?

As a student, when the magic in the air that season permeated (传播) the girls’ boarding school I attended outside Boston, we begged our house directors to let us stay up past curfew to watch the games on TV, and when they at first refused, we listened on radios in our rooms and gleefully burst into the halls to cheer.

So when my husband said he’d never be a Red Sox fan, my heart clenched. But one delightful spring day our teeny apartment came to my rescue. As we sat at our dining room table, we heard a roar swell to a crescendo. This was the first indication that we could hear the stadium crowds from our home.
