Jean’s dream was to be a great chef, so when she was 20, she travelled to France, which has the most famous cuisine in the world, to learn to cook. After twelve years, she was among the best.
Her father, Bob, was getting old, and she wanted to be near him. Jean accepted an offer from one of Washington’s top restaurants. The manager offered her a handsome salary, and 30% ownership of the restaurant. The next day, Jean went to sign the contract. As she got out of the car, she caught sight of a green sunshade. Instead of going to meet the manager, she crossed the street towards the old restaurant, Fargonetti’s. She pushed open the door and the memories came flooding back.
Jean’s mum died when she was just 11, and her father lost his job and was forced to freelance (从事自由职业). Money was very short. When Jean turned thirteen, Bob had made a reservation at Fargonetti’s, the capital’s best restaurant.
“I’m not hungry, baby girl. I had a huge breakfast,” Bob said. “This is all for you!” “Oh,” Jean cried. “Daddy was so silly! He’s been saving to come here for lunch for MONTHS and now he ruined his appetite with breakfast!” The waiter, Carl Bader, immediately realised what was going on and went to Mr Fargonetti, the restaurant owner, and told him about Jean and Bob.
An hour later, surprisingly, the waiter brought wonderful dishes and set them before the father and daughter. “Lunch is on the house with Mr Fargoneti’s compliments (致意),” Carl said. For Bob and Jean, it was a free but magical meal. They were on cloud nine when they walked out. “Jean,“ said Bob happily. “I feel our luck has changed!” And it did! The next day, one of Bob’s old friends called and offered him a job at a new magazine, and Jean believed Fargonetti’s had made it all happen. That was when she decided to become a chef!
Twenty years later, the old restaurant looked run-down and sad, but Jean recognised the waiter immediately. “Carl?” she asked delightedly.

John lay down on the couch.Mother’s Day was coming, and he didn’t have any present.“How can I buy a present without any money?” he thought to himself.
John picked up the newspaper that was lying on the couch. He noticed a large ad on the front page. The local department store was holding a contest.“Tell us why your mum is special and win a shopping spree(狂欢购物) for her,” said the ad.
“This is perfect!” thought John.He ran excitedly to his room with the newspaper. Taking a pencil and a blank piece of paper from his desk,he started to write.
“My mum is the best mother in the world. She always makes a lunch for me to take to school, and she never forgets my dessert. She reads as many stories to me before bed as I want. She always remembers to check under the bed for monsters(怪物). And she gives the best hugs, but never in front of my friends, who would laugh at me for hugging my mum. She always tells me the hugging is the best way to show our love for each other.”
John liked what he had written. He copied it neatly and got an envelope and a stamp from his dad. He then ran to the mailbox with his article.“Mum will love having a shopping spree,”he thought with the firm belief that he would surely win the big prize. And this would be the best present for his dear mum.
John checked the mailbox every day for his prize. Days passed by,and then weeks. So it was the day before Mother’s Day.John still hadn’t heard anything about the contest. With time going by,the mixed feeling of disappointment and anxiety was growing in his heart.

The Principal and the Popcorn Popper
Spring was approaching. Principal (校长)Peters was wandering in the empty part of the huge school yard when the students' request flashed through his mind again. It couldn't be better to eat the cabbages, carrots, or eggplants planted by themselves. But how to raise money for seeds and tools?
The topic came up at the teachers' meeting. Teachers suggested various means of collecting money with enthusiasm; one teacher suggested, “We have a popcorn popper (爆米 花机)in the teachers' lounge (休息室).How about kids making popcorn to sell?”
When the popcorn proposal reached the students, they jumped with joy. Agreement was reached -every Thursday, in their labor course, by selling popcorn for 25 cents a bag, they could enjoy a snack while raising money to buy seeds and tools for their garden.
Soon the first Thursday came. Principal Peters got to his office as usual just right next to the teachers' lounge. Hearing popping sound, he smiled, for it meant the promise of the potential garden. But it was REALLY loud. He wrapped a scarf around his head to block his ears. When the first Thursday was over, he breathed a sigh of relief. But the next Thursday, popping sound happened again. This time, he had brought earplugs. The day, it seemed, would last forever. But for the kids' garden dream, he put up with it willingly.
The following Thursdays witnessed Principal Peters attempting to pile gym mats against his office walls and asking the fifth grade to practice for their concert in the hallway outside his office. The "unbearable" popping sound seemed to have taken root in his head! But for the kids' vegetable garden dream, he put up with it willingly.
On the 11th Thursday, he went to the teachers' lounge again to see how much money was still needed. Seeing the Principal coming with a hard-hidden painful expression, the students responded cheerfully, “Only with 41 dollars our garden dream will come true.” Hearing this, Principal Peters left without saying anything.

Desiree, a 4-year-old girl, was sobbing quietly over her father, Ken, who had died nine months earlier. She was hugging a photograph of her father with her fingers running around his face. “Daddy”, she said softly, “Why won't you come back?”
Instead of gradually adjusting to her father's death, Desiree refused to accept it “Daddy will be home soon,” she'd tell her mother. “He's at work.” When she played with her toy telephone, she pretended she was chatting with her father “I miss you, Daddy,” she'd say. “When will you come back?” Desiree's situation made her mother worried.
Days later, it was Ken's birthday. “How will I send him a card?” Desiree asked her mother “How about if we tie a litter to a balloon.” her mother said, “and send it up to heaven?” Desiree's eyes immediately lit up.
Her mother took her to a store and Desiree picked out a balloon with HAPPY BIRTHDAY above a drawing of The Little Mermaid (美人鱼). Desire and her father had often watched it.
The child's eyes shone as they were on the way to Ken's grave. Then Desiree dictated (口述) a letter to her Dad. “Daddy, Happy birthday, I love you and miss you,” she rattled off (快速说). “I hope you get this and can write to me on my birthday in January.”
Her mother wrote the message and their address on a small piece of paper, which was then wrapped in plastic and tied to the end of the string on the balloon. Finally, Desiree let fly the balloon. For almost an hour, they watched the shining spot of silver grow smaller and smaller till disappear. “Now Dad's going to write back to me,” Desiree said confidently.
Every day since they'd flew the balloon, Desiree had asked her mother, “Do you think Daddy has my balloon yet?” Several weeks passed, and she stopped asking.

Lauriesat quietly in the empty dressing room at theice-skatingrink (溜冰场).She had not been skating in any competition since her leftkneewas badly injured in an accident six months ago. As she waited for her turn to skate,Laurie was very nervous. She knew that today was a very important day in hercome back.
“If I canwintoday.” she thought, “I can skate in the World Cup next year and then maybe I can make it to the Olympics.”
Laurie was told that she had a toughcompetitionthis year, and a girl from Connecticut named Jinny Jordan who was really strong in everything.“She is the one you have to beat this year." the coach said.
Minutes later, the door opened and Laurie saw a young woman who was about her own age. The young woman dumped some of her belongings onto a chair. The bag fell to the floor with a thud (砰地一声).
Laurie felt uncomfortable as she looked at Jinny. “So this is my competition,” thought Laurie.” Because of her, I may lose tonight. ”
“This costume (服装)was my mom's idea,”Jinnystarted the conversation, looking down at her red. white, and blue skating dress. “It look like a flag. ”
Laurie couldn't keep from smiling. She pointed to Jinny’s skating bag. Some stuff fell out of your bag" Laurie said.
Jinny looked at the clothing and equipment that lay scattered on the floor. As she began to gather her belongings, the door opened.
“Jinny.” called someone, “You’d better give the tape of your music to the sound engineer right away."
“I thought I gave him mymusic tapean hour ago," said Jinny. Tell him it's the green box with my initials (姓名的首字母)written in white in the right-hand corner.”
“He said you never gave it to him. and he's getting angry.”
“Then I don't know what I did withit,- said Jinny, hurrying out.
Laurie knew that music was nearly asimrportantto the program as skating itself. If she lost her music tape, she might as well forget about skating. Laurie stood up and walked to the chair to do a few more knee bends.
