People may often think back to the good old days in their former schools. In the charm of school life, where classrooms are seats of learning and the schoolyard becomes a source of memory, there are a number of stories mixed with humor, warmth, and teacher-student relationships.

Mr. Brown was a countryside teacher, but not an ordinary one; he was a storyteller, a mentor (导师), and a friend to all his students. His classroom was a world of its own, full of colorful characters and brilliant ideas. One day, during the noon break, a student named Julie noticed a young cat wandering with fairly quick, light and quiet steps through the familiar grounds where many schoolyard tales were born. Julie took her to Mr. Brown, who had magical tricks for handling even the smallest things. With Mr. Brown’s permission, Julie and her classmates built a shelter for the cat in a corner of the campus.

The days turned into weeks, and the cat grew under the care of Mr. Brown and his students. Once in a while, she became a temporary resident of the classroom, much to the delight of the whole class. They named her “Campus”, a name that generalized (概括) the spirit of their school days.

As the year progressed, Campus was not just an animal, but a tie connecting each of them and a thread of continuity in their lives. She played on desks, slept in chairs, and hid in folders, thus becoming an unofficial mascot (吉祥物) of the classroom. The students found comfort in her presence, and Mr. Brown was quite happy to watch them grow through her company.

As graduation neared, Mr. Brown gathered his students for one last lesson. He told them that they would soon be exploring new horizons. He reminded them that life was full of unforeseeable twists and turns along with unexpected potentials, just like the appearance of a cat in their schoolyard. At the moment, the students were greatly touched and deep down there arose a strong love for the memorable warmth and hearty laughter of their school days.

Then, Mr. Brown and the students agreed to meet there once again in eight years.

For the first two years in primary school, I was an extremely shy girl. I had a few friends, but it wasn’t easy for me to be very outgoing, even if I knew them well. If I was with strangers, I was even quieter. So I was not good at meeting new people, I was in constant fear that I would do or say something wrong. As a result, on our school’s annual play day, I usually sat in a remote corner to watch the performance alone, although I hoped to sit in the front rows to see the actors more clearly.

One day in the third grade, my teacher Mrs. Sally called me into her office and said, “Oh, Mary, you’re great at memorizing things, and you have such a sweet voice. You are perfect for Jenny!”

But I bowed my head and dared not speak. The teacher saw this and then said, “Of course, plenty of girls would love the role, and I could find somebody else. But I hope you could try it for me. I had you in mind for Jenny while writing the play! If you really don’t want to, you can turn down the offer.”

My mind was running wild when Mrs. Sally, whom I loved and admired, asked me to play the role.

“She believes in me!” I thought.

Just then I looked up and happened to see on the wall a poster I had never noticed before. It showed a shooting star and read, “If you reach for the stars, you might at least grab a piece of the moon.”

Realizing it was time to throw off my shy mask and show the world who I really was, I said firmly, “Okay, I’ll try my best, Mrs. Sally!”

In the following five months, Mrs. Sally taught me how to put on makeup, memorize lines, create costumes and so on.
