One day Bryan Anderson noticed an old lady stuck on the side of the road. He could see she needed help. So he pulled up in front of her Mercedes and got out. He left his motor still running when he approached her.
Even with a big smile on his face, she was worried. He didn’t look safe; he looked poor and hungry. After reading her mind, he introduced himself as Bryan Anderson and began to help her.
Learning that she had a flat tire, without a second thought, Bryan set out to work and took hours to get it right, dirty and tired. She couldn’t thank him enough for coming to her aid.
With everything done, the lady asked how much she owed him. Any amount would have been all right with her. She already imagined anxiously all the awful things that could have happened. Bryan never thought about being paid. This was helping someone in need. He had lived his whole life that way, and it never occurred to him to act any other way.
Bryan told her that if she really wanted to pay him back, the next time she saw someone who needed help, she could give that person the help the way he had given her, and he added, “And think of me to let the chain of love pass on.”
Hearing that she owed him nothing, the old lady was touched and then she drove off with a deep “Thank you”, with tears rolling down her cheeks.
A few miles down the road the lady saw a small café. She went in to grab a bite to eat and take the chill off before she made the last leg of her trip home. In the dirty-looking restaurant, the whole scene was unfamiliar to her. The waitress came over and brought a clean towel to wipe her wet hair. She had a sweet smile, one that even being on her feet for the whole day couldn’t erase. The lady noticed the waitress was nearly eight months pregnant, but she never let the strain and aches change her attitude. Then she remembered Bryan.

“Ugh, chicken rolls again? I hate chicken rolls!” Matt yelled. “I’m not eating this.” Matt’s mom and dad looked at each other. Matt’s outbursts had been happening at least once a week all summer long.
“You know what, Matt? We re going to let you take over dinnertime from now on. You can pick the meals and cook them, as long as they’re healthy,” Mom said.
“Good, we’re going to eat good food every night!” Matt answered.
The next day, Dad sat down with Matt to make the meal plan so he could go grocery shopping. Matt had already been thinking about his favorite dinners. “We’re going to have beef tonight, and spaghetti tomorrow, and macaroni (通心粉) and cheese the next day,” Matt started.
“Woah, hold on now,” Dad said. “What else are we going to have with the beef? We need to have at least one vegetable with each meal, and usually we have another side to go with it.”
“Oh, yeah. Um, we can have corn with the beef,” Matt said.
“Sophia does not like corn,” said Dad.
“Well, it’s my choice, so I’m going to make corn,” Matt replied.
“OK, but she might complain at dinner tonight. Are you ready for that?” Dad asked.
“Yeah, whatever,” Matt answered.
Matt and his dad spent the next hour figuring out the whole week’s meals and side dishes. It was a lot more work than Matt expected, and almost every time he picked something out, his dad would tell him that someone in the family wouldn’t like it. It was very frustrating. “This is impossible!” Matt said.
“Yes, it is hard. Your mother and I try very hard to make everyone happy, but everyone has different tastes, and sometimes, we just can’t please everyone.”
“Fine, we’ll have to just go with this plan this week. Next week I’ll try to make everyone happy,” replied Matt.

After graduation, Jason went to work in a big business. The schedule was very tight and he was so busy working, travelling from one place to another, that he was always on business for weeks without going to his mother’s home. And this year, he hadn’t seen his mother for months. Mother’s Day was coming up, and he would have managed to go back home, but this year he was just too busy and too tired. One day, when he was driving in a small town, he saw a flower shop. He said to himself, “I know what I will do. I’ll send my mother some flowers,“
He stopped and went into the flower shop and saw a boy talking to a girl in it. “How many roses can I get for five dollars?”, the boy asked. The girl was trying to explain that roses were expensive. Maybe the boy would be happy with something else.
“No, I have to have roses,” he said. “It has to be red roses, because my mum likes them best. It’s Mother’s Day. I want to get something special.” He was stubborn.
The girl in the shop looked at the boy and was just shaking her head. Something inside Jason was touched by the boy’s voice. It seemed that he wanted to get those roses very much. Jason looked at the boy and said to the girl that he would pay for the boy’s roses.
The girl looked at the boy and said, “Okay, I will give you ‘a dozen red roses for your dollars." The boy almost jumped into the air. He took the flowers and ran out. It was worth more than fifty dollars just to see that kind of excitement.
Jason ordered his own flowers and asked the girl to have them taken to his mother. After that, with relief, he drove down the road.

8 . Group-Centered Societies Have Just as Much Creativity
What does culture have to do with creativity? The answer could be “a lot”. For decades, psychologists trying to understand the roots of creative imaginations have looked at the ways in which two different types of cultures can come to have an effect over its artistic and

In the new creativity study, researchers investigated innovation with these two groups in mind. The team used a drawing test that had been created by psychologists. They gave kids a sheet of paper with just a few basic elements printed on it: some dots here, squiggles (弯曲的线条) there, and a rectangle that suggested a drawing frame. The children got 15 minutes to use the elements already on the page to draw whatever they wanted. They could get “adaptive creativity” points for doodling in ways that connected the squiggles and lines into an original and
The researchers gave the test to 683 middle school students from north and south of the Yangtze River. When the scientists got the scores back, they discovered that there were no differences in the children’s overall creativity. When they broke down the results into components, they found that students from collectivistic regions scored
The findings are also a warning against cultural chauvinism (极端民族主义). Western countries have tended to lead the way in innovation — at least as defined by the metrics (指标) we Westerners have created. Perhaps we have been
