Emily White was born seventeen years ago with so many birth problems in her body. Some of her organs, bones and muscles were out of shape. No one expected her to survive. She did make it but with her strange body figure, everyone could recognize her, even from a distance.

In Emily White’s hometown, there was a yearly outdoor performance in the school auditorium (大礼堂). It had been performed for so many years and actually had become one of the most important events of the Christmas season for many of the town’s people.

Many people tried out each year for it, but so many were turned away. It can only include the most excellent people in the field.

Emily had a beautiful singing voice. Last year she went to Mrs. Owens — her music teacher to ask to join in the performance. Without letting her sing, Mrs. Owens took a look at Amy’s body and said, “Child, you just don’t fit. Everyone would stare at you and that would make you uncomfortable. It would make them uncomfortable, too.”

Without singing a single note, Emily was sent back through the door of the choral room. Hurt and upset, she decided never to try out again. But Mrs. Owens then retired.

This year, there came a new music teacher, Mr. Buttler. He heard about Emily and suggested that she have a try.

Emily didn’t want to be rejected again, so she hesitated a little about it. As Emily struggled, the door was pushed open and Mr. Buttler called, “Emily, you’re next.” Although kind of nervous, Emily did as Mr. Buttler told her to do. Mr. Buttler sat by the piano to keep Emily company. When Emily finished her testing performance, she thanked Mr. Buttler and knew the result would be posted on the door of the choral room the next day.

Emily couldn’t sleep that night. She was suffering from the feelings that she didn’t fit and the great need to be accepted. By the next morning, her stomach was even in pain because of stress.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章讲述的是美国关于火星探索的进程,在未来的某一天,人类将去往火星。

4 . “Two centuries ago, Lewis and Clark left St. Louis to explore the new lands acquired in the Louisiana Purchase,” George W. Bush said, announcing his desire for a program to send men and women to Mars. They made that journey in the spirit of discovery. America has ventured forth into space for the same reasons.

Yet there are vital differences between Lewis and Clark’s expedition and a Mars mission. First, they were headed to a place where hundreds of thousands of people were already living. Second, they were certain to discover places and things of immediate value to the new nation. Third, their venture cost next to nothing by today’s standards. A Mars mission may be the single most expensive non-wartime undertaking in U.S. history.

Appealing as the thought of travel to Mars is, it does not mean the journey makes sense, even considering the human calling to explore. And Mars as a destination for people makes absolutely no sense with current technology.

Present systems for getting from Earth’s surface to low-Earth orbit are so fantastically expensive that merely launching the 1,000 tons or so of spacecraft and equipment a Mars mission would require could be accomplished only by cutting health-care benefits, education spending, or other important programs—or by raising taxes. Absent (缺乏)some remarkable discovery, astronauts, geologists, and biologists once on Mars could do little more than analyze rocks and feel awestruck (敬畏的) staring into the sky of another world. Yet rocks can be analyzed by automated probes without risk to human life, and at a tiny portion of the cost of sending people.

It is interesting to note that when President Bush unveiled (公开) his proposal, he listed these recent major achievements of space exploration: pictures of evidence of water on Mars, discovery of more than 100 planets outside our solar system, and study of the soil of Mars. All these accomplishments came from automated probes or automated space telescopes. Bush’s proposal, which calls for reprogramming some of NASA’s present budget into the Mars effort, might actually lead to a reduction in such unmanned science—the one aspect of space exploration that’s working really well.

Rather than spend hundreds of billions of dollars to hurl (投) tons toward Mars using current technology, why not take a decade or two or however much time is required researching new launch systems and advanced propulsion (推进力)? If new launch systems could put weight into orbit affordably, and advanced propulsion could speed up that long, slow transit (运输) to Mars, the dream of stepping onto the red planet might become reality. Mars will still be there when the technology is ready.

1. What do Lewis and Clark’s expedition and a Mars mission have in common?
A.Instant value.B.Human inhabitance.
C.Venture cost.D.Exploring spirit.
2. Bush’s proposal is challenged for the following reasons EXCEPT that ______.
A.great achievements have already been made in Mars exploration in America.
B.American people’s well-being will suffer a lot if it is carried out.
C.its expense is too huge for the government to afford.
D.unmanned Mars exploration sounds more practical and economical for the moment.
3. Which of the following can be concluded from the passage?
A.Going to Mars using current technology is quite sensible.
B.A Mars mission will in turn promote the development of unmanned program.
C.Bush’s proposal is based on three recent great achievements of space exploration.
D.The achievements in space exploration show how well manned science has developed.
4. What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Risky as it is, a Mars mission helps maintain America’s position as a technological leader.
B.A Mars mission is so costly that it may lead to an economic disaster in America.
C.Someday people may go to Mars but not until it makes technological sense.
D.A Mars mission is unnecessary since the scientists once there won’t make great discoveries.

6 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Mark was returning home from his school as usual when he suddenly heard the wind howling and blowing at a high speed. Soon it started pouring cats and dogs. He ran as fast as he could but tripped over a piece of rock and fell down. In his hurry to reach home fast, he had to take the shortcut route, which passed through the graveyard (墓地 ).

His mother’s words came ringing loud in his ears. She had warned him about taking the shortcut. But it was now too late. Suddenly, it was all dark around and the heavy downpour didn’t allow him to get a good view of the surroundings. He could now hear strange sounds. He was terrified and was trembling with fear.

He remembered about the flashlight in his pockets. As soon as he switched it on, a huge figure plunged on him. He kicked it hard and it fell with a thud(扑通一声). He was panicked and was at his wits end.

Mark didn’t know what to do. As he looked at what this creature was, he found that it was only a big stone. Mark couldn’t go to the graveyard, nor could he wet his books, so he took small steps towards a tree nearby. As he neared it, the sounds seemed getting louder. He became really frightened but then he thought,” I surely must be dreaming and I don’t want to wake up Mom and feel that I am a scary cat. Nothing can happen to me in a dream.” So he looked behind the tree. To his surprise he found an old tape recorder there. He said, “What a nasty trick! I am going to find who’s behind this tree.” So he looked around. That’s when he found an old mine(矿井) there. As he neared it, he heard a voice“ what if we are caught.” “ No, we won’t, as there are rumors(谣言)about this place and when people hear this noise they are sure to run away, so we are safe here. Nobody will find us with these stolen goods”.

Paragraph 1 :

“Thieves?” Mark was surprised and guessed the voice that he heard came from some thieves.

8 . China launched a large robotic spacecraft early Tuesday morning at the Wenchang Space Launch Center in South China’s Hainan province, tasking it with landing on the moon and bringing back lunar samples, 44 years after the last time such extraterrestrial substances were brought back to Earth.

A Long March 5 heavy-lift carrier rocket lifted its 20-story-tall body and soared skyward trailing a spectacular silver flame at 4:30 am from its launch pad, leaving many spectators in awe and excitement. The rocket was tasked with placing the 8.2-metric ton Chang’e 5, which consists of four parts --- orbiter, lander, ascender and re-entry capsule --- in an Earth-moon transfer trajectory. Chang’e 5 will fly in it within the next several days and make some correction operations before conducting a key braking maneuver to avoid accidentally flying past the moon. After its arrival in lunar orbit, the probe(探测器) will fly around the celestial body for a certain period of time and will then separate into two parts, with the orbiter and re-entry capsule remaining in orbit while the lander-ascender combination going down to the lunar surface. The landing combination will make an engine-assisted touchdown on the moon and later conduct such assignments as obtaining underground rocks from 2 meters beneath the surface and gathering surface dirt.   If everything proceeds smoothly, about 2 kilograms of stones and soil will be collected and packed in a vacuum metal container inside the ascender. After the two-day surface operations are done, the ascender’s rocket will elevate it to lunar orbit to dock with the re-entry capsule. The combination of orbiter and re-entry capsule will then depart the lunar orbit and return to Earth’s orbit, where the pair will break up and the re-entry capsule will return to a preset landing site in North China in mid-December. Back on the lunar surface, the lander will continue carrying out survey and measurement.

The entire mission is scheduled to last about 23 days, according to the China National Space Administration.

1. What does the underlined word “trajectory” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.spaceB.capsuleC.pathD.operation
2. Why will the orbiter and re-entry capsule remain in orbit?
A.To transfer samples back to earth.
B.To be ready if the lander broke down.
C.To obtain underground rocks and surface dirt.
D.To help the lander-ascender combination go down to the lunar surface.
3. Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A.The collection of rocks and dirt will last about 23 days.
B.Chang’e 5 will fly at a fixed speed to avoid flying past the moon.
C.The vacuum metal container will be delivered to the re-entry capsule after the collection.
D.The lander will come back to earth with the ascender to carry out survey and measurement.
4. What is the best title of the passage?
A.Space Race between Superpowers

Sophia frowned as she helped her mother and father set out the cooking supplies in the shiny steel kitchen. Her family had just moved here from San Francisco, having bought a small restaurant, which was set to open in the next few days.

“Moving here was a dumb idea," Sophia grumbled, mostly to herself. The girl had been joyless about the move, but her parents had made the decision and were now too busy getting ready for the grand opening to listen to her complaints.

The first few days at her new school hadn't been easy, either. She found it hard to talk to people she didn't know, and it seemed like the students hadn't even noticed her. Sophia sighed and got back to washing dishes.

On the day of the grand opening,Sophia' s parents were all smiling, welcoming customers into the restaurant, brightly decorated in gold and red. Even Sophia was in a good mood as she rushed around, seating guests, handing out menus, and pouring tall glasses of water. This was a big day for her family.

At one of the tables sat a family with two daughters who were about Sophia' s age. As she filled their glasses,Sophia realized the twins were in her class,Emily and Jenny. Sophia ducked her head down so her long hair covered her face, and she turned away from the table.

Sophia' s mother found her soon after, in the kitchen loading the dishwasher.

“Honey, what are you doing back here? We need you out front with the customers. ”

“Mom, I don't want to be out there. There are kids from school!”

“So?” her mother asked.“That's good! Go take them some fortune cookies and say hello!”She clucked her tongue disapprovingly at Sophia and disappeared out of the kitchen.

Sophia frowned. She grabbed a handful of fortune cookies that they gave out after every meal, but first she tore open a wrapper and cracked a cookie open for herself. She popped a sweet, crunchy piece in her mouth, and absently read the fortune paper it held.

“Many friends are found with a single smile,” it read.

10 . 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

One day I got stuck in the Tube on my way to work.

The Tube—that’s what most people call it—is London’s underground railway system.

It was about nine o'clock in the morning, the middle of the rush-hour. Nobody had expected something unusual would happen later and everyone was doing their usual: a pretty girl gave her boyfriend sweet kisses one after another. Sitting next to me, a young woman with a suitcase and a baby took a scarf out of her suitcase and made her baby a nest, so that it could lie more comfortably. In fact, the train had just left Green Park Station when, instead of speeding up, it started to slow down and then came to a stand-still.

Ten minutes passed, though it seemed like half a day. the train didn’t move. Had the railwaymen forgotten all about our existence? Had there been a crash on the line in front? How serious was the breakdown? We had no means of knowing. However, to anxious people who are stuck in the Tube, I suppose it doesn’t really matter what it is that has broken down. What they care is when they can get out of the trouble.

Twenty minutes passed. All hope of getting to work on time had long since gone. Had the train really broken down? Several people thought so, but they were wrong. A railwayman at last came down the length of the train to tell us that the power supply had failed, and that we were not to worry as they were working to put it right.

We could not leave the train, as it had stopped in the tunnel (隧道), not at a station. There was nothing else to do. The weak signal disabled cellphones. Besides, the train was getting hot and stuffy (闷). I even began to wonder if we were going to stay there for the rest of the day.

The hopeless waiting in the darkness drove us crazy.
