文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了科学家提出向高层大气注入冰颗粒以应对全球变暖,旨在干燥上层大气减少温室效应。该方法尚处于理论阶段,未投入实践,旨在探索可能性。

3 . Scientists in the US have come up with an unusual idea for how to solve global warming—cool the Earth by injecting (注入) ice particles into the upper atmosphere to make it drier. Water vapor—water in its gas form—is a natural greenhouse gas that traps heat, just like carbon dioxide from burning coal, oil and gas.

Researchers at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) believe that if they add ice up high in the air, it could dry out the upper atmosphere and reduce its ability to trap human-caused warmth. “By now, it’s just an early idea that scientists could add to their ‘last-ditch toolbox’ against climate change,” said NOAA physicist Dr Joshua Schwarz, lead author of the study published in the scientific journal Science Advances. “This is about exploring what might be possible in the future and identifying research directions,” he said, explaining scientists didn’t find the suitable technology yet.

The approach is one of a few proposed by scientists that aim to reduce the impact of climate by changing the world’s atmosphere or oceans—a practice known as geoengineering.

The way that it could possibly work is that hi-tech planes could inject ice particles about 17 km high, which is just below the stratosphere (平流层), where the air slowly rises. The researchers believe that the ice and cold air would rise to where it’s coldest, making the water vapor turn to ice and fall, drying out the stratosphere in the process.

Injecting two tonnes of ice per week could reduce global heating by about five percent of the overall warming caused by fossil fuels and shouldn’t be used instead of cutting pollution. Researchers were unsure how they would inject the ice and whether or not the practice could cause side effects.

1. Why do scientists want to add ice to the upper atmosphere?
A.To dry out the air.B.To increase the greenhouse gas.
C.To explore the space.D.To give off human-caused warmth.
2. What can we know about the ice injection idea?
A.It upsets research directions.B.It earns public praise.
C.It hasn’t been put into practice.D.It has proved effective.
3. What could possibly make the water vapor turn into ice?
A.The warm air.B.The high-tech planes.
C.The fossil fuels.D.The lowered temperature.
4. From which section of a newspaper is the text probably taken?
A.People.B.Environment.C.Education.D.Health.

Day expressed her gratitude to the people who organized the trip and said it was one of the best days of her life. “I could sit here forever with an elephant sitting by my side,” she said.

9 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Learning motivation only accompanied by interest can last long. My grandfather used to be the director of a local museum. So since I was young, I had the opportunity to visit various museums with him. After entering high school, I became interested in history, and I constantly collected information related to museums.

When I was 17, I read a magazine article about a museum called the McNay, once the home of a watercolourist named Marian McNay. She had requested the community to turn it into a museum upon her death.

Do not miss your chance to see Texas’ first modern art museum—the McNay Art Museum. There are more than 20,000 different and significant works. With beautiful Spanish gardens and the amazing architecture of the building, the art within the walls isn’t the only wonder to see.

On a sunny Saturday, Sally and I drove over to the museum. She asked, “Do you have the address?” “No, but I’ll recognize it, there was a picture in the magazine.”

“Oh, stop. There it is!”

The museum was free. We entered, excited. A group of people sitting in the hall stopped talking and stared at us.

“May I help you?” a man asked. “No,” I said. “We’re fine.” Tour guides got on my nerves. What if they talked a long time about a painting you weren’t that interested in? Sally had gone upstairs. The people in the hall seemed very nosy (爱管闲事的), keeping their eyes on me with curiosity. What was their problem? I saw some nice sculptures in one room. Suddenly I sensed a man standing behind me. “Where do you think you are?” he asked. I turned sharply. “The McNay Art Museum!” He smiled, shaking his head. “Sorry, the McNay is on New Braunfels Street.” “What’s this place?” I asked, still confused. “Well, it’s our home.” My heart jolted (震颤). I raced to the staircase.
