文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了找到一个一起健身锻炼的伙伴的好处,并给出了具体的寻找方法。

1 . Fitness Magazine recently ran an article titled “Five Reasons to Thank Your Workout Partner.” One reason was: “    1    ” Another read: “You’ll work harder if you train with someone else.” With a workout partner, you will increase your training effort as there is a subtle (微妙) competition.

So, how do you find a workout partner?

First of all, decide what you want from that person. Do you want to be a better athlete in your favorite sport?     2     Think about the exercises you would like to do with your workout partner.

You might think about posting what you are looking for on social media, but it probably won’t result in a useful response. A workout partner usually needs to live close by.     3

My partner posted her request on the notice board of a local park. Her notice included what kind of training she wanted to do, how many days a week, and her age.     4     Any notice for a training partner should include such information.

5     Just accept your differences and learn to work with each other. Over time, both of you will benefit—your partner will be able to lift more weights and you will become more physically fit. The core (核心) of your relationship is that you will always be there to help each other.

A.Your first meeting may be a little awkward.
B.You and your partner will probably have different skills.
C.How can you write a good “seeking training partner” notice?
D.You’ll actually show up if you know someone is waiting for you at the gym.
E.Or do you just want to be physically fit, able to move with strength and flexibility?
F.It also listed her favorite sports and activities, and provided her phone number.
G.If you plan on working out in a gym, that person must belong to the same gym.

Grading Scale

90-100, A; 80-89, B; 70-79, C; 60-69, D; Below 60, E.

Essays (60%)

Your four major essays will combine to form the main part of the grade for this course:

Essay 1 = 10%; Essay2= 15%; Essay3= 15%; Essay4= 20%.
Group Assignments (30%)

Students will work in groups to complete four assignments(作业) during the course. All the assignments will be submitted by the assigned date through Blackboard, our online learning and course management system.

Daily Worth/In-Class Writing and Tests/Group Work/Homework (10%)

Class activities will vary from day to day, but students must be ready to complete short in-class writings or tests drawn directly from assigned readings or notes from the previous class’s lecture/discussion, so it is important to take careful notes during class. Additionally, from time to time I will assign group work to be completed in class or short assignments to be completed at home, both of which will be graded.

Late Work

An essay not submitted in class on the due date will lose a letter grade for each class period. If it is not turned in by the 4th day after the due date, it will earn a zero. Daily assignments not completed during class will get a zero. Short writings missed as a result of an excused absence will be accepted.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了成为乐观者的一些好处。

4 . Optimism (乐观) is probably not a surprise that optimistic thinkers tend to be happier than pessimistic thinkers.     1     Here is what may surprise you.

Optimists live longer.

Optimistic thinkers have lower rates of high blood pressure, heart disease, and even risk of cancer, as well as lower rates of mortality in general. These health factors may be influenced by optimists’ focus on taking care of themselves.     2     One large study published in 2022 determined that optimists have a life span 11% to 15% longer than average.     3

Optimists are more successful.

Just as optimists tend to be more resilient (有复原力的) outside of the workplace, they are also resilient on the job. Even if their bosses don’t recognize that they’re doing a good job, optimists are able to bounce back and keep performing well. People who are more optimistic also seem to have better job security than less optimistic workers.     4     Plus, people who feel optimistic about their careers are more likely to both succeed at work and to feel satisfied with their jobs.

    5

People with higher levels of subjective well-being — a mindset that can include optimism — have stronger immune systems and even experience faster wound healing than others with lower levels of well-being. People with positive experiences lowered their rates of depression, physical symptoms, and sleep complaints.

A.Optimists take fewer sick days.
B.Optimists pick themselves up faster.
C.But there are other benefits to being optimist.
D.They are more likely to live to age 85 or older.
E.Optimists are more likely to take steps to cope with it.
F.This improved security can even lead to increased optimism.
G.Optimists tend to exercise more, sleep better and eat healthier.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了批评性思维的定义及怎样拥有更好的评判性思维。

5 . Critical thinking is the ability to think clearly and rationally, understanding the logical connection between ideas. Critical thinking has been the subject of much debate and thought since the time of early Greek philosophers such as Plato and Socrates and has continued to be a subject of discussion into the modern age, for example the ability to recognise fake news.

Critical thinking might be described as the ability to engage in reflective and independent thinking. In nature, critical thinking requires you to use your ability to reason. It is about being an active learner rather than a passive recipient of information.

Critical thinkers rigorously (严厉地) question ideas and assumptions rather than accepting them at face value. They will always seek to determine whether the ideas, arguments and findings represent the entire picture and are open to finding that they do not.

One of the most important aspects of critical thinking is to decide what you are aiming to achieve and then make a decision based on a range of possibilities.

Once you have clarified that aim for yourself you should use it as the starting point in all future situations requiring thought and, possibly, further decision making. Where needed, make your workmates, family or those around you aware of your intention to pursue this goal. You must then discipline yourself to keep on track until changing circumstances mean you have to revisit the start of the decision-making process.

However, there are things that get in the way of simple decision making. We all carry with us a range of likes and dislikes, learnt behaviours and personal preferences developed throughout our lives; they are the hallmarks of being human. A major contribution to ensuring we think critically is to be aware of these personal characteristics, preferences and biases (偏见) and make allowance for them when considering possible next steps.

The more clearly, we are aware of ourselves, our strengths and weaknesses, the more likely our critical thinking will be productive.

1. What will you be by using critical thinking?
A.A creative philosopher.B.A passive recipient of information.
C.An independent organizer.D.An active learner.
2. Which of the followings belongs to critical thinking?
A.Setting up direct targets.B.Coming up with imaginative ideas.
C.Analysing original reasons.D.Making various possible decisions.
3. What can we infer from paragraph 6?
A.Personal preferences will change critical thinking.
B.Individual behaviours will stop you pursuing the goal.
C.Tastes and preferences vary from individual to individual.
D.Critical thinking gets in the way of simple decision making.
4. What can be the best title for the text?
A.What is Critical Thinking?
B.How does Critical Thinking work?
C.How is Critical Thinking Productive?
D.What effect does Critical Thinking cause?

7 . Some Old Truths to Help You Overcome Tough Times

Life is not a bed of roses and we are going through life facing sad experiences. Hard times may hold you down at what usually seems like the most inopportune (不合时宜的) time.     1     I want to share these old truths I’ve learned along the way.

Most of your fears are unreal. Fear is both useful and harmful. This normal human reaction is used to protect us by signaling danger and preparing us to deal with it.     2     Will Smith once said, “Danger is very real. But fear is a choice.”

3     Sometimes you can be easily caught up by life problems that you forget to stop and appreciate the things you have. Only strong people prefer to smile and value their life instead of crying and complaining about something.

You are not alone.     4     Try to keep in mind that almost everyone wants to help you if you are trying to make a good change in your life.

Pave your own unique path. Today many people find it difficult to trust their own opinion and seek balance by gaining objectivity from outside sources.     5     When you are struggling, you should believe in yourself and be sure that your decision is the best.

A.Luckily, they won’t last forever.
