1 . One day in elementary school, a friend asked me “What are you eating?” as she glanced at my lunchbox. “It smells,” she said, nose crinkled.
I was eating bhindi roti, my favorite Indian snack, which my mom had packed for me. But feeling embarrassed for having a “smelly” lunch and wanting to fit in, I quietly shut my lunchbox. That day, I went hungry.
Most days after that, lunchtime at school felt like a battle. If I wasn’t trying to hide my lunch or sneak quick bites when no one was looking, I’d insist on bringing in the same peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwich as the other kids. My mom, who didn’t grow up eating American food, tried her best, but the sandwiches never looked, or tasted, as good as the food I devoured(津津有味地吃) at home.
I didn’t know that I wasn’t alone. Many kids with immigrant parents encounter(遭遇) what’s known as “the lunchbox moment” at school: the experience of being judged for bringing in food considered culturally different and so being made to feel like an outsider.
For this article, I talked with kids who could relate. But they also surprised me:They dealt with “the lunchbox moment” differently than I did. For example, Satya Singh, 6, who takes her mom’s Indian cooking to lunch most days, told me that one day a classmate said that her aloo, or potatoes, looked like poop. Another time, someone said that the dal, or lentils, looked like “throw up”. The next day, Satya brought enough dal to share with her entire class — and they loved it. From then on, she says, “My teacher at school made a rule: Don’t yuck someone’s yum.”
Looking back, I wish I’d had the wisdom of Satya and offered my friend a bite of my lunch, or just told her it was delicious — especially because now, as an adult, I see that Indian food is universally loved by my friends. Some even try to cook Indian lentils or chickpeas at home! And when I’m hungry, guess what? I miss my mom’s bhindi roti and her care in making it for me. Food is an expression of culture, tradition, family and love. And that’s something to celebrate, not hide.

Charles Rose lived in the country with his father, who taught him to read and to write. Mr. Rose told his son that, when his morning lessons were over, he might amuse himself for one hour as he pleased.
There was a river near by. On its bank stood the hut of a poor fisherman, who lived by selling fish. His careful wife kept her wheel going early and late. They both worked very hard to keep themselves above want. But they were greatly troubled for fear that their only son should never learn to read and to write. They could not teach him themselves, and they were too poor to send him to school.
Charles called at the hut of this fisherman one day, to inquire about his dog, which was missing. He found the little boy, whose name was Joe, siting by the table, on which he was making marks with a piece of chalk. Charles asked him whether he was drawing pictures.
“No. I am trying to write,” said little Joe, “but I know only two words. Those I saw upon a sign, and I am trying to write them.”
“If I could only learn to read and write,” said he, “I should be the happiest boy in the world.”
“Then I will make you happy said Charles.” I am only a little boy, but I can teach you that.”
“My father gives me an hour every day for myself. Now, if you will try to learn, you shall soon know how to read and to write.”
Both Joe and his mother were ready to fall on their knees to thank Charles. They told him it was what they wished above all things.
So, on the next day when the hour came, Charles put his book in his pocket, and went to teach Joe. Joe learned very fast, and Charles son began to teach him how to write.
Some time after, a gentleman called on Mr. Rose, and said, “Charles did not always amuse himself. I often see him go to the house of the fisherman. I fear he goes out in their boat.”

6 . Do Dolphins Have a Language?
We know that dolphins make unique sounds, but is that a language? If you’re interested in it, you are welcome to the activity recommended by Denise Herzing!
About Denise Herzing
Denise Herzing of Florida Atlantic University (FAU) is the organiser and research director of the Wild Dolphin Project, which has a goal of understanding dolphins’ social system, behaviour, and communication. For over thirty years, she has spent each summer watching Atlantic dolphins carefully in the Bahamas.
Activity Guide:
Purpose:
Dolphins use sound to communicate, but they can’t make sounds in the way we humans make. Out of the water dolphins can make different sounds by changing the shape of their blowhole (呼吸孔), which is similar to changing the shape of our own mouths. Underwater, though, they use a totally different system, and they make sounds without letting any air out. You can learn more about how that works here. In this activity we’re going to try to talk like a dolphin.
Materials:
Nothing! But find a partner, maybe a brother or sister or a parent — or if you have one, a dog or cat. After all, this activity is about communication between humans and animals.
How To Do It:
Take a deep breath, hold your nose to keep it shut, and try to communicate with your partner. If your partner is a pet, try saying its name or asking it to “come here”.
When you’re done, think about what made it hard, what solutions you found, and think why dolphins may have developed to communicate in this way.
Then listen to sounds from all kinds of sea animals and compare your dolphin sound to theirs.
1. What can we learn about Denise Herzing?A.She holds the activity in FAU. |
B.She is an expert in dolphins. |
C.She wants to find a partner for her research. |
D.She fell in love with dolphins when young. |
A.Have a pet next to you. | B.Keep breathing deeply. |
C.Talk with your nose closed. | D.Compare dolphins with other animals. |
A.In a diary. | B.In a report. |
C.In a travel brochure. | D.In an activity book |

Winnie the Pooh
by A A Milne
My father used to read this to me when I was very young — he used different voices for all the animals. The characterization (角色设定) was so clever; we all know someone just like each inhabitant of the Hundred Acre Wood: gloomy Eeyore; thick but loyal Pooh; enthusiastic Tigger.
A A Milne was masterful in exploring the way they got along together, opening my eyes to how society really works.
Last Chance to See
by Douglas Adams and Mark Carwardine
This book tells of the authors, adventures as they set out to find the rarest of animals, those on the edge of extinction.
Their travels are rather exciting and they share a wonderful humour, which really appealed to me. Yet underpinning (支撑) everything is the realization that we can't just sit back and allow species to disappear.
Picture Palace
by Paul Theroux
I've always loved Theroux's travel writing, but this novel took my breath away. The words aren't long or complicated but, from that first paragraph, his writing grabs you by the nose hairs and drags you along. I had an art teacher who told me, “You're only an artist when you've found your own style, not when you're copying someone else, and Theroux represents this.”
1. Why did the author mention the characterization of Winnie the Pooh?A.To indicate the book has realistic values. |
B.To show how adorable the characters are. |
C.To persuade people to learn from the characters. |
D.To prove the writer is good at creating characters. |
