Jane, a lovely girl, had a very sweet family. Although the second oldest, Jane had the least self - control, and had hard times trying to control her bad temper, which was continually getting her into trouble. Poor Jane tried desperately to be better, but her inner enemy was always ready to flame up and defeat her, and her mother was always the first to come to her rescue.
Jane had just finished the draft of her first book, which was regarded as a pride of the whole family, expecting it was good enough to print. To celebrate this big event, Jane and the other two sisters planned to go to the theatre to see The Seven Castles. They didn't want to take Amy, the youngest, with them. Seeing that they were leaving, Amy begged them not to leave her alone and even offered to buy her own ticket herself, but in vain. “You can't sit with us, for our seats are reserved, and you mustn't sit alone, and that will spoil our pleasure,” scolded Jane, crosser than ever. Sitting on the floor, Amy began to cry.
The girls hurried down, leaving their sister crying. Amy forgot her grown - up ways, and acted like a spoilt child. She called over the banisters (扶手), in a threatening tone, “You'll be sorry for this, Jane March; see if you aren't.” “You dare!?” said Jane, slamming the door.
They had a happy time, for The Seven Castles was as brilliant and wonderful as heart could wish. But, in spite of the gorgeous princes and princesses, Jane's pleasure had a drop of bitterness in it. The fairy queen's yellow hair reminded her of Amy with wondering what her sister would do to make her “Sorry for it.”
When they got home, Jane found Amy reading in the sitting room. Jane assumed an injured air as they came in but everything was in its place. Jane decided that Amy had forgiven and forgotten her wrongs.
Jane was mistaken, for the next day she found her book missing.

5 . Despite Kyle Tianshi being only a 15-year-old US high schooler, he has published five sci-fi novels. His fifth book Eventide was released in July. However, this may not be his most impressive achievement as Kyle just received the “Hero Award”, a $20, 000 grand prize. It is the top honor in the California Youth Sustainability Awards. The competition aims to encourage and support young community leaders who are making a difference for sustainability in their communities by taking action for the planet.
Kyle, a sophomore from the Cambridge School in the US, received the honor for his portable invention called NEREID. The device can detect microscopic particles (粒子) in water by using a laser and microscope. These particles can be harmful to people and the environment.
Kyle came up with the idea for the invention based on his experience growing up in San Diego, California, US. People had no access to unpolluted drinking water and his parents asked him not to drink tap water. Kyle spent about $60 buying the tools needed to analyze the tap water: a laser, a microscope and a micro-computer. “It’s incredibly powerful for the price,” Kyle said. Then he used their family’s garage as his laboratory, doing research on the pollution of drinking water caused by micro-plastics.
Kyle hopes to bring to market a low-cost alternative tool for detecting micro-plastic pollution levels in drinking water. In this way, he can offer help to people who don’t have access to water filtration (过滤) systems. He has applied for a patent.
Kyle said his sister Emily, a freshman at Stanford University, inspired his interest in environmental research. She was recognized nationally for developing a water collection device. They have founded the Clearwater Innovation program to advocate for clean water through social media platforms and organize community cleanup events.

6 . A new report links eating eggs to an increased risk of heart disease. The results follow several earlier studies that found eating eggs was generally healthy. The new report combines data from six other earlier studies. It shows a 6 percent increased risk of heart disease when the average number of eggs a person eats each day increased by half an egg.
In the United States, eggs are generally one of the top sources of cholesterol (胆固醇) in a person’s diet. Individuals with higher levels of cholesterol in their diets are at increased risk for the development of heart disease later in life. The team examined data gathered from six studies that involved a total of 29,615 people. Earlier researchers had followed these people for an average of 17.5 years. At the start, the participants answered questions about the foods they ate. But they were not asked about their diets at any time after that.
Over time, there were 5,400 heart-related incidents among the group. This included 2,088 deadly and non-deadly heart disease events and 1,302 deadly and non-deadly stroke events. It also included 1,897 deadly and non-deadly heart failure events and 113 other deaths from cardiovascular (心血管的) disease.
After examining the data, Allen’s team found a link between egg consumption as reported at the start of the study and people’s risk of developing heart disease. As their egg consumption rose, so did their risk.
Eggs contain a lot of cholesterol—about 200 milligrams. That is the highest daily amount recommended under current guidelines. Less than one egg a day on average is acceptable from a nutritional standpoint. The study is observational, meaning it can only show there is a link between egg consumption and heart disease. But it cannot prove eggs are the cause of the disease. It may just be that people eating a lot of eggs are also consuming a lot of bacon.

Old George had bought the black leather gloves at a 25% discount, for just $35.00 ten years ago. They were soft and warn and very durable. He had taken care not to let a drop of water or rain touch his expensive gloves, so they looked like new. Losing this favorite possession was almost like losing a child to him.
George, calm on the outside but nervous inside, re-entered the store. He followed the same route he had walked before, starting at the bread counter, to the milk section, the corner where salt and sugar were placed, then the rest of the store. Several minutes of anxious searching turned out to be in vain. He asked the customers whether they saw a pair of black leather gloves, but they said no. Then he went over to the cashier without hesitation.to ask if she had received any lost gloves, but only received the same answer. His heart grew heavier.
“Society has changed, people have changed,” he murmured to himself. “Years ago, if somebody picked up something lost, they would give it back. Now a good action is lost.”
Yet he did not give up hope. He started to stare at anybody wearing black gloves to see if they looked like his. The first two persons he saw did wear gloves, but one was women's and the other not black.
