文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。J.K. Rowling的书帮助一个单身父亲改善他和女儿的关系,他在Twitter上给J.K .Rowling留言表示感谢。

1 . J. K. Rowling frequently shows there is magic every day. Her Harry Potter series has helped people through times of stress and depression and she is always there to deliver wise words of encouragement.

She is one celebrity who is very active on Twitter. So when a single dad named Matt Burke sent her a message thanking her for the series, she noticed. Her series had helped strengthen his relationship with his 9yearold daughter Bailey.

He included a link to his article titled Being a Broke Parent. He explained how he hadn’t found a level of financial stability that allowed him to pay bills on time and take his daughter on more activities and events. The family also doesn’t have the Internet or TV, which means there’s no “digital babysitter” and he has to rely on his own creative ways to bond with his daughter. Since he received the series, the main thing that has occupied them these days is reading books together.

Burke admits that he thought he was “too cool” for the books when they first came out and he was in his twenties, but he’s loving reading them now. “We switch off chapter by chapter reading them out loud,“Burke explains.” This not only allows her to get more used to reading aloud in front of someone, but it gets me directly involved in something she loves, and it gives me the chance to be very dramatic when I read my chapters and bring myself into the characters in the book, which has proven to be a ton of fun.”

After hearing Burke’s story, Rowling said how honored she was when Harry Potter was a part of his family’s life and offered Burke more books. Besides, people are also offering to send Burke more books as gifts. For Burke, this experience, far more than gifts, will be what he treasures.

C.He has chosen a better way of reading the series.D.He hopes to play a role in the drama in the future.
3. Which word can best describe Burke’s experience according to the text?
A.Useless.B.Normal.C.Valuable.D.Boring.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要描述了痴呆的风险随着年龄的增加而增加,并提出了预防痴呆症的建议。

2 . Losing your ability to think and remember is pretty frightening. We know the risk of dementia (痴呆症) increases with age. But if you have memory slips, you probably needn’t worry. There are pretty clear differences between signs of dementia and age-related memory loss.

After age 50, it’s quite common to have trouble remembering the names of people, places and things quickly, says Dr. Kirk Daffner of Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.

The brain ages just like the rest of the body. Certain parts become smaller, especially areas in the brain that are important to learning, memory and planning. Changes in brain cells can affect communication between different regions of the brain. And blood flow can be reduced as blood vessels narrow.

Forgetting the name of an actor in a favorite movie, for example, is nothing to worry about. But if you forget the plot of the movie or don’t remember even seeing it, that’s far more concerning, Daffner says.

When you forget entire experiences, he says, that’s “a red flag that something more serious may be involved”. Forgetting how to operate a familiar object like a microwave oven, or forgetting how to drive to the house of a friend you’ve visited many times before can also be signs of something going wrong.

But even then, Daffner says, people shouldn’t panic. There are many things that can cause confusion and memory loss, including health problems like temporary stoppage of breathing during sleep, high blood pressure, or depression, as well as medications (药物) like antidepressants.

You don’t have to figure this out on your own. Daffner suggests going to your doctor to check on medications, health problems and other issues that could be affecting memory. And the best defense against memory loss is to try to prevent it by building up your brain’s cognitive (认知的) reserve, Daffner says.

“Read books, go to movies, take on new hobbies or activities that force one to think in novel ways.” he says. In other words, keep your brain busy and working. And also get physically active, because exercise is a widely known to boost the brain.

1. Which memory-related symptom should people take seriously?
A.Totally forgetting how to do one’s daily routines.
B.Inability to recall details of one’s life experiences.
C.Failure to remember the names of movies or actors.
D.Occasionally confusing the addresses of one’s friends.
2. What should people do when signs of serious memory loss show up?
A.Check the brain’s cognitive reserve.
B.Stop medications affecting memory.
C.Turn to a professional for assistance.
D.Exercise to improve their wellbeing.
3. What is Dr. Daffner’s advice for fight against memory loss?
A.Having regular physical and mental checkups.
B.Taking medicine that helps boost one’s brain.
C.Engaging in known memory repair activities.
D.Staying active both physically and mentally.
4. Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined word “boost” in the last paragraph?
A.Reduce.B.Benefit.C.Increase.D.Depress.

3 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

In 1989, fresh out of high school, I had the difficult task of choosing a career path before college started in three months. In those days in Pakistan, there were limited choices: becoming a doctor or an engineer, or entering the financial world after getting a business degree. I wasn’t interested in engineering, so that I was left with medicine or business. I couldn’t decide.

My uncle suggested that I do a work placement(实习) to experience it for a month in an international company followed by a month in a hospital. After that, I could make a decision. It seemed like a good idea.

I was accepted for a month’s placement at a foreign bank in Karachi. I got a feel of how the world of finance functioned, made new friends, and generally enjoyed the mostly easygoing work surroundings.

The month passed rapidly, and soon I began working at a leading hospital in Karachi. The experience couldn’t have been more different. The hospital had a stressful environment. The days started early (at 7 am, compared to 9 am at the bank), and were filled with endless duties. And the night calls! This was crazy, working all day, through the night, and again the next day.

I began thinking about my two experiences. The bank had offered a more relaxing atmosphere, better working hours and less stress. The hospital was full of excitement, but studying and training were difficult. It seemed that the business choice was going to win out.

Near the end of my month at the hospital, I was driving home after an especially busy night call. In front of me was a public bus, with college students sitting on the top. As the driver weaved through (穿梭) traffic, I could see the boys shaking from side to side.

6 . Born in Russia and living in an orphanage (孤儿院) for the first 13 months of her life, Jessica Long had no idea what her future would hold. The little girl born with Fibular Hemimelia would not only go on to be a 13-time gold medal-winning Paralympic champion, but she would inspire others to chase their dreams.

Long was born in Russia, where she lived in an orphanage until her parents adopted her in 1993. Soon after being adopted, she had to have her legs amputated (截肢) at only a year and a half. “It gave me a lot of freedom and movement,” Long said. “But growing up was definitely really hard. From a very early age, I just decided that I was going to be unstoppable and I wasn’t going to let my legs hold me back.” From that point forward, she didn’t let anyone tell her what she was or wasn’t capable of doing. She started doing gymnastics as a kid. Then, in 2002, Long found her sport for life: swimming!

“I was the only girl with no legs on the swim team, ” she said. “There were moments I struggled, but my teammates treated me like a friend. When I look back on my life and I think about anyone on that team, no one made fun of me for having no legs and they were so kind.” Long defied (顶住) all odds and surprised everyone when she qualified at age only 12 for the Paralympics in 2004 in Athens. After four Paralympics, Long has won 13 gold, six silver, and four bronze medals. She has dozens of World Championship medals and has broken numerous world records throughout her career so far. But she didn’t concentrate on winning awards or being famous. “I really just love swimming. It’s important for any athlete to remember just why you started,” she said.

As one of the most decorated athletes in history, Long’s goal is to just keep competing as long as her body allows. “Dream big,” she said. “There are so many possibilities out there, so find your passion, be consistent and work hard. You define your own success.”

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了两位在奥运赛场上全力挑战自我的大龄运动员,她们展现了真正的奥运精神。

7 . There’ve been plenty of Tokyo 2020 headlines about Hend Zaza, the Syrian table tennis genius who, at 12 years old, is one of the youngest Olympians of all time.

But there are some striking personal stories on the other side of the age spectrum (年龄谱), too.

Oksana Chusovitina, a 46-year-old gymnast from Uzbekistan, impressively competed in her eighth Olympic Games this summer. Chusovitina, who competed in a sport dominated by teenage athletes, received a standing ovation (鼓掌欢呼) after performing in what she said would be her last Olympics. “I feel very good to be here. But this will for sure be my last Olympics, she told reporters. “I’m 46 years old. Nothing is going to change that. I’m alive, I’m happy, I’m here without any injuries, and I can stand on my own,” she added with a laugh.

Then there’s Australian equestrian (马术师) Mary Hanna, who at age 66 is the second-oldest female athlete in Olympic history and the oldest Olympian competing in Tokyo.

“Through their efforts, Hanna and Chusovitina are changing the conversation around age and agility. They’re proof that you can compete or put yourself up to a physical challenge way past what is considered your peak,” said Michael Stones, a professor at Lakehead University in Ontario, Canada, who researches healthy aging and physical performance. “It’s great that this year’s Olympics include so many younger and older athletes,” he told HuffPost. “They show that age alone is not an insurmountable (不可克服的) barrier to excellence in physical activities.”

These Olympians also lend the games some experience and maturity, especially in team sports, said Sandra Hunter, a professor of exercise science at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. “These older athletes can help guide the younger ones, particularly with all the mental and psychological challenges that we’ve seen,” she said. “They bring a level of maturity to the teams and surrounding athletes that allows the younger athletes to learn.”

“If you limit your choices only to what seems possible or reasonable, you disconnect yourself from what you truly want, and all that is left is compromise.” The quote from American writer Robert Fritz is highly consistent with the Olympic spirit as well as enlightening us on our way to success.

1. Who is Oksana Chusovitina?
A.A 12-year-old table tennis player.
B.A 46-year-old gymnast from Syria.
C.A 66-year-old Australian equestrian.
D.An eight-time Olympian from Uzbekistan.
2. The first paragraph is intended to________.
A.lead in the topic of the passage
B.stress the importance of being a genius
C.tell the difference between younger and older athletes
D.introduce a research on performances of younger athletes
3. What’s professor Michael Stones’s attitude to those younger and older Olympians?
A.Doubtful.B.Uncaring.
C.Supportive.D.Indifferent.
4. What can be inferred from the passage?
A.Olympic athletes should try their best to be uninjured.
B.Olympic athletes prove success is not related to age.
C.Olympians show that age alone is not an insurmountable barrier.
D.Older athletes are changing the conversation around age and agility.

8 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was cool and bright and just right for running. I was in the first few miles of a 10-mile race through some hills. Birds were singing on the trees. The soft wind was brushing my cheeks. I felt rested and springy. Despite the hills, I thought it was going to be a fine run.

Ahead was Blake, a student from Burke High School. He was running easily, too, moving along efficiently. The pace felt comfortable, so I decided to stay where he was; why bother concentrating on pace when Blake was such a nice pacesetter for me? I would overtake Blake later on when he used up energy.

So I ran closely behind him. The course headed north for five miles, wandered west for a mile, and then turned south again. The race was getting tougher. With three miles to go, it was beginning to be real hard work. My lungs were on fire, and legs felt like stone.

Blake overtook the boy in front of him. Apparently he knew the boy, for they exchanged a few words. Their brief communication worried me. Runners don’t chat during a race unless they feel really good, and Blake plainly was. There was still a noticeable bounce in his steps, but the springiness I had once possessed was gone.

Still, I was close enough to overtake Blake if he was tired, so I didn’t give up hope completely. We were approaching a hill, a mile from the finish line, so whatever happened on the hill would almost certainly determine who crossed it first.

As I moved up the hill, my attention wandered for a few minutes. When I looked up, Blake was moving away, first five yards, then ten, then more. There was no hope of catching Blake.

2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Suddenly Blake slowed and sat onto the ground painfully.

10 . The red knot, flying long distances and migrating (迁徙) every year from the Arctic to West Africa and back, has been facing great risks as shellfish food is becoming fewer in the feeding grounds lining its migratory route. Now climate change is affecting these birds: they are getting smaller in size, and the effects may be speeding up their extinction.

Scientists found that global warming is making red knot chicks miss their insect peak and therefore achieve a smaller size with a shorter bill (喙). The changes are reducing the population's survival rates in their wintering grounds.

Furthermore, the fewer migrants are paying the price, with the smallest young birds' survival only half of that of the larger ones. Leading researcher Jan van Gils of the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research said the reason is quite simple since only larger birds with long bills can reach deeply hidden shellfish for food. “Shorterbilled birds were forced to live on seagrass, which is a poor food source for these birds. The poor survival of fewer firstyear birds clearly contributes to the population decrease seen in red knots nowadays,” van Gils explained.

The North American red knots were listed as threatened in 2015 due to the decrease in horseshoe crab eggs in their key stopover feeding location, Delaware Bay, on their way to their winter home.

Over the last three decades, snow at the birds' breeding ground has progressively melted at a halfday rate every year, which brings it to over two weeks at present. This change has led to a mismatch: plants blossom earlier and insects feeding on the plants come out earlier, but the chicks eating the insects are too late to feed on them at their peak.

1. What threatens red knots on their way of migration?
A.Cold weather.B.The falling snow.
C.Their difficulty in finding shellfish.D.The disappearance of their feeding grounds.
2. In what way does global warming affect red knots?
A.They now hunt with shorter bills.B.They are confused during migration.
C.They have to migrate farther to find food.D.Fewer of them are migrating year by year.
3. What happens when plants blossom earlier?
A.Red knot chicks come out earlier.
B.Red knot chicks miss the insect peak.
C.The insect peak comes and goes too quickly.
D.There are too many insects for red knot chicks.
4. Which can be the best title for the text?
A.The endangered red knotsB.Global warming and its effect
C.Climate change affects migrating birdsD.Red knots get fewer due to climate change
