2 . Millions of people crowded onto trains, airplanes and buses across China last week. They were hurrying home, to be with their families for China's most important holiday, Chinese New Year. More than one billion people around the world are celebrating the New Year.

History Behind the Holiday

The Chinese New Year is celebrated at the second new moon after the winter solstice (冬至). According to an ancient legend, Buddha(佛祖) asked all the animals to meet him on Chinese New Year. 12 animals came, and Buddha named a year after each animal. The animals were: the mouse, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig.

A Good Year to Be a Pig

Buddha announced that people born in each animal's year would have some of that animal's personality. If you were born in 1959, 1971, 1983 or 1995, you were born in the year of the Pig. People who were born in these years are believed to be polite, honest, hardworking and loyal. They are also supposed to be lucky, which is why many Chinese like to have babies in a Pig year. They are said to get along best with people born under the year of the Rabbit, Goat, Tiger, Dragon, Horse and Dog.

Festivals, Lions and Feasts

On Chinese New Year's Eve, the Chinese celebrate with fireworks, family gatherings, and feasts. One of the most popular ways to celebrate the holiday is the lion dance. The lion is regarded as a holy (神圣的) animal. During celebrations, dancers dressed as lions (or holding up paper lions in the air) perform to bring good luck to the people they visit at their homes or businesses. People often wear in red, which symbolizes fire. Legend has it that fire can drive away bad luck. The 15day New Year season is celebrated with firecrackers, dragon dances and visits to friends and relatives. The celebrations end with the Lantern Festival, when brightly colored lanterns are hung in parks around China.

文章大意:本文是说明文。文章主要介绍如何养成好习惯的方法。

4 . Our lives are full of habits. Unfortunately a great many of them are bad habits. One way to break these bad habits is to fill our lives with good habits. Most people decide one day that they need to make changes to their lives and then they go all out to make big sweeping changes. This may work for them for the first few days, but then they get burned out.     1     This is a very unproductive way to spend your time and energy.

2     Say your goal is to get up an hour earlier every day. One day you start setting your alarm for an hour earlier and you keep this up for one week. Then because you are naturally resistant to change, you go back to your old habit. A better way is to set your alarm one minute earlier every day. After two months you are getting up an hour earlier and you will not even notice the change.     3

This approach can work for just about anything. If you are exercising for half an hour every day and you want to increase that time to one hour then add a minute every day. After one month you will have reached your goal with very little resistance from your body and mind.     4

This method of change is gentle, but very powerful. Think of everything you can accomplish if you just continuously improve a little at a time. The change itself creates the momentum (动力) you need to keep going.     5     What one minute change can you make to your life today?

A.The key is to change a little bit at a time.
B.Keeping on exercising can build up strength.
C.It may take longer, but with this approach you are likely to succeed.
D.Nothing will happen if you are not determined to achieve your goal.
E.Pretty soon they are back to their old habits and nothing has changed.
F.Changing slowly removes the greatest barrier we have to change: fear.
G.Soon you will find yourself reaching your goals with almost no pain involved.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了澳大利亚和几个国家的科学家联合制造一个超级地面望远镜。

10 . Australian scientists are leading an international project to build an extremely powerful ground-based telescope(望远镜).The telescope’s short name is MAVIS. It is designed to correct a problem common to Earth-based telescopes: image blurring(图像模糊) caused by the atmosphere(大气).

Scientists in Australia say the new technology will help them explore how the first stars formed 13 billion years ago. The telescope will also examine changes in the weather on planets and moons in our solar system. It will provide a deeper and clearer look into space than the Hubble Space Telescope. Images produced by MAVIS are expected to be three times clearer than the Hubble Space Telescope. Sent into space in 1990, Hubble orbits(环绕) Earth from about 550 kilometers away, well outside the planet’s atmosphere.

Richard McDermid of Macquarie University in Sydney says the new telescope will change the way we explore space. He said the telescope will allow scientists to push into a new frontline(前沿) of the furthest and faintest(最微小) things we can see. “The new view will include the universe’s earliest galaxies(星系). This also means an exploration of the past,” McDermid said, “because when we look far away in astronomy we are also looking far back in time because it takes time for the light to reach us.”

The MAVIS team, which includes scientists from Macquarie University, Italy’s National Institute for Astrophysics, and France’s Laboratoired Astrophysique, is led by the Australian National University. The telescope will be placed in Chile and run by the European Southern Observatory, a research organization based in Germany. It is expected to take seven years tobuild and cost  $44 million.

1. What is the purpose of MAVIS?
A.To provide clearer pictures of outer space.
B.To find the universe’s earliest galaxies.
C.To observe the planets in different weather.
D.To examine the changes in the solar system.
2. What can we know about MAVIS?
A.It will be placed on other planets outside Earth.
B.It will help explore the past of the universe.
C.It will replace the Hubble Space Telescope.
D.It will be the first telescope to travel to space.
3. What is the purpose of McDermid’s words?
A.To give an example.B.To explain a concept.
C.To describe a fact.D.To make a prediction.
4. What is the text mainly about?
A.The importance of outer space research.
B.The introduction to a new space program.
C.Australia’s plan to build a super telescope.
D.The difficulties of exploring the universe.
