Michelle was 8 years old when she heard her mom and dad talking about her little brother Jack, now only an infant (婴儿). He was sick and they were completely out of money. Only a very costly operation could save Jack now, but there was no one to whom they could turn for the money needed. She heard her daddy say to her tearful mom, “Only a miracle can save him now.”
Hearing the words, Michelle went to her bedroom and took all the coins from her little money box. After counting the coins three times, she slipped out of the back door and made her way to the drug store 6 blocks away.
She waited for a long time before the pharmacist (药剂师) turned around and asked her, “And what do you want?”
“Well, it’s about my brother,” Michelle answered, “he’s really, really sick. And I want to buy a miracle.”
“I beg your pardon?” said the pharmacist.
“His name is Jack. And he has something very bad growing inside his body. And my daddy says only a miracle can save him now. So how much does a miracle cost?”
“We don’t sell miracles here, little girl. I am sorry but I can’t help you.” The pharmacist said.
“Listen, I have the money to pay for it.” With these words, Michelle poured out all the coins from her pocket.
At this time, a well-dressed man behind Michelle stooped down and asked the little girl, “I am selling the miracle you want. Tell me how much money you have.”
“One dollar and eleven cents.” Michelle answered in a low voice, “That’s all the money I have. But I can get some more if I need to.”
“Well,” smiled the man, “A dollar and eleven cents —the exact price of a miracle for you little brother. Show me the place where your brother lives.”

5 . How to Keep Peace With Roommates
Keeping peace with your roommates will not always be a walk in the park.
Mind your basic manners and get to know your roommates more. Respect for each other and communication can make sure of peace of the room. Basic manners include knocking, saying “excuse me” when needed, being quiet and lowering the light level when the roommate is sleeping. Organize an open discussion about your roommate’s personality. Know his likes and dislikes. Have the necessary information in case of emergencies.
Solve conflicts (矛盾) in a calm manner. Good communication is the key here. It is best to keep the conflicts only in the room when they happen.

6 . Millions of people crowded onto trains, airplanes and buses across China last week. They were hurrying home, to be with their families for China's most important holiday, Chinese New Year. More than one billion people around the world are celebrating the New Year.
History Behind the Holiday
The Chinese New Year is celebrated at the second new moon after the winter solstice (冬至). According to an ancient legend, Buddha(佛祖) asked all the animals to meet him on Chinese New Year. 12 animals came, and Buddha named a year after each animal. The animals were: the mouse, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig.
A Good Year to Be a Pig
Buddha announced that people born in each animal's year would have some of that animal's personality. If you were born in 1959, 1971, 1983 or 1995, you were born in the year of the Pig. People who were born in these years are believed to be polite, honest, hardworking and loyal. They are also supposed to be lucky, which is why many Chinese like to have babies in a Pig year. They are said to get along best with people born under the year of the Rabbit, Goat, Tiger, Dragon, Horse and Dog.
Festivals, Lions and Feasts
On Chinese New Year's Eve, the Chinese celebrate with fireworks, family gatherings, and feasts. One of the most popular ways to celebrate the holiday is the lion dance. The lion is regarded as a holy (神圣的) animal. During celebrations, dancers dressed as lions (or holding up paper lions in the air) perform to bring good luck to the people they visit at their homes or businesses. People often wear in red, which symbolizes fire. Legend has it that fire can drive away bad luck. The 15day New Year season is celebrated with firecrackers, dragon dances and visits to friends and relatives. The celebrations end with the Lantern Festival, when brightly colored lanterns are hung in parks around China.

8 . Why do Chinese people love hot pot so much? As the winter months are coming in, more and more people are sitting around a table enjoying this kind of traditional meal. I find myself wondering what it is about this traditional meal, which has existed for more than 1, 000 years. What makes it a Chinese food favorite? It seems that the answer lies beyond the dish itself.
Hot pot isn’t just designed to keep you warm during the cold months; it’s also a social experience. It’s a “theater” cooked food that turns a meal into an event. There is a lot of fun for everyone to have in adding some foods to the hot pot.
Hot pot is eaten not less than two hours. For this reason, it is often considered an evening’s entertainment, and a time to spend with friends and families. However, many Westerners would be put off by the idea of other people sticking chopsticks in their food. When we come to eat at the table in the UK, we often have our own shares, although the experience is still a social one.
A similar experience to the hot pot can be found in Korean barbecue restaurants, which let you cook your own meat. This allows people to have their meat done however they want.
For most Westerners, the idea of going to a restaurant to cook their own food is very strange. But having a go, I find it’s now one of my favorite meals in Beijing. The steam from the pot left my clothes smelling of food when I got home, but perhaps this was also part of the experience. When the cold wind is blowing outside, I am sitting around with my good friends, eating and drinking. For me it’s like a dinner party where my taste buds (味蕾) and my appetite are equally satisfied in the warm company of friends.
1. What is the main reason why hot pot is popular in China?A.It has a history of over 1, 000 years. |
B.It is a fun social experience. |

D.It keeps people very warm in winter. |
A.More than three hours. |

C.don’t like sharing food with others in restaurants |

10 . It was the final day of our holiday: I’d gone snowboarding with my little brother and what we lacked in skill we made up for in enthusiasm, catching the first ski lift in the morning and the last lift in the afternoon. That day, we were in high spirits. We stopped near the top of an off-piste section (非滑雪场区域) that went through forests. I’d done this route a few times before and, as I was faster and more experienced, I let my brother disappear into the trees ahead, figuring I would soon catch up.
I began to pick up speed when I was suddenly thrown off balance. I didn’t fall but I lost control of the board. I was unable to turn, instead going in a straight line, gathering speed. Just as I was regaining control, I crashed into the trunk of a large tree.
It was like hitting a concrete pillar (柱子). I didn’t lose consciousness but the pain was felt instantly and overwhelming. I knew pretty much immediately that my back was broken and quickly realised the situation could get very serious. I tried to stand but collapsed and almost blacked out with pain before I got halfway up.
Walking was not an option. Crawling was too slow and painful. I had another idea: I managed to get the board unattached to my feet and moved it under my stomach so I was lying on it. I faced down the mountain and, using the board as a luge (小雪橇), I started to drag and slide my body down the steep, tree-lined slope. I used my arms to stop myself sliding out of control. I descended at a slow jogging pace, trying to slow myself as much as possible.
Eventually, I managed to slide myself on to a cross-country ski path and was given first aid before a helicopter took me to hospital. The recovery road was tough, but months later, I was back doing what I love most.
