1 . Many children first learn the value of money by receiving an allowance (pocket money). The purpose is to let children learn from experience at an age when financial mistakes are not very costly.
At first, young children may spend all of their allowance soon after they receive it. If they do this, they will learn the hard way that spending must be done within a budget.
Paying children to do extra work around the house, however, can be useful. It can even provide an understanding of how a business works.
Allowances give children a chance to experience the things they can do with money.
Saving helps children understand that costly goals require sacrifice: you have to cut costs and plan for the future.
Requiring children to save part of their allowance can also open the door to future saving and investing.
That may not seem like a lot. But over time it adds up.
A.Many banks offer services to help children and teenagers learn about personal finance. |
B.They can share it in the form of gifts or giving to a good cause. |
C.It is a good virtue for children to form a habit to learn how to save money. |
D.The amount of money that parents give to their children to spend as they wish differs from family to family. |
E.Parents are usually advised not to offer more money until the next allowance. |
F.Parents are supposed to tell their children how they should spend their pocket money wisely but the refused to do so. |
2 . Biology may not be everything, but genes apparently have a far greater influence on human behavior than is commonly thought. Similarities ranging from hobbies to bodily gesture are being found in pairs separated at birth. Many of these behaviors are “things you would never think of looking at if you were going to study the genetics of behavior,” says psychologist Thomas J. Bouchard, Jr. , director of the Minnesota Center for Twin and Adoption Research at the University of Minnesota.
Bouchard reports that so far, exhaustive psychological tests and questionnaires have been completed with approximately 50 pairs of identical twins reared apart, 25 pairs of fraternal twins reared apart and comparison groups of twins reared together. “We were amazed at the similarity in posture and expressive style,” says Bouchard. “It’s probably the feature of the study that’s grabbed us the most.” Twins tend to have similar mannerisms, gestures, speed and tempo in talking, habits and jokes. Many of the twins dressed in similar fashion--one male pair who had never previously met arrived in England sporting identical beards, haircuts, glasses and shirts.
The most striking example of common psychopathology (精神病理学) however, came from a pair of twins raised apart. One had been reared by his own (poor) family the other had been adopted into a “good solid upper-middle-class family.” Both are now considered to be antisocial personalities, suffering from lack of impulse control, and both have criminal histories. Although the twins share, on average, 50 percent of their genes, Bouchard suggests that the overlap is probably considerably more with this pair.
Personality similarities between the identical twins raised apart are almost the same as they are with identical twins raised together, according to the results of a test developed by University of Minnesota psychologist Auke Tellegen. His personality questionnaire contains scales such as “social closeness,” “harm avoidance” and “well-being.” The researchers were especially surprised to find that “traditionalism” — a trait implying conservatism and respect for authority — can be inherited. In fact, says Bouchard, his and other studies have found about 11 personality traits that appear to have significant genetic input.
Overall, the emerging findings of the Minnesota study constitute a powerful disproof of those who maintain that environmental influences are the primary shaping forces of personality. The textbooks are going to have to be rewritten, Bouchard predicts.
1. Why does Bouchard say these behaviors are “things you would never think of looking at if you were going to study the genetics of behavior?”A.These behaviors seemed too unimportant for scientists to observe. |

C.Psychologists assumed these external characteristics could not be biologically based. |
D.Psychologists assumed the causes of these behaviors were too complicated for current methods of observations. |

A.some textbooks on genes and behavior will be rewritten quite soon. |
B.people’s behaviors and personalities depend at large on their genes |
C.his personality questionnaire can indicate people’s 11 personality traits |

A.Twins generally share the same hobbies and gestures if they are raised apart. |
B.Genes have a greater influence on human behavior than is commonly thought. |
C.People from upper-middle-class family are the same as those from poor family. |
D.Twins tend to dress in similar fashion even when brought up in different families. |

It was the start of a new week. Since my past weekend had been busier than a regular weekend, I was more tired than usual. Worse still, it was raining.
I complained about my misfortune. This day was terrible! What an awful morning! Things were so bad for me! This weather was miserable, and so was l!
As I stepped out the front door, a strong wind blew my umbrella inside-out. I decided to run through the cold downpour to the car, but I didn’t see the ankle-deep puddle (水坑) until I stepped into it. Time for more complaining.
Now I was damp and late for work. The traffic on the expressway was really heavy. A car behind me warned me — someone thought I wasn’t going fast enough. I would have listened to the traffic report on the radio, but it was broken. How poor I was!
Finally, after managing to navigate my route through the traffic on the exit ramp (匝道), I decided I would stop at that little coffee shop near my company for a cup of coffee—I was going to make that a large cup of coffee.
The line of cars at the drive-through was stretching around the parking lot, so I figured it would be faster if I just got out and went inside.I sighed impatiently as I waited in line until I reached the counter where I ignored the friendly greeting from one of the clerks — I was too busy with my complaining — and ordered my favorite: a caramel hazelnut coffee, extra cream, no sugar. My order was served, and I moved to the register. That’s when I realized I had left my wallet at home! This added to my misfortune. I tried to explain my situation to the cashier (收银员), hoping to find a solution.

Saving the Carnations
Dawn broke. Regina aged 14 opened her sleepy eyes and looked out of the window at the foggy field below. “NO!” she cried, now fully awake. Buttermilk, the cow was in Mama’s carnation (康乃馨) garden.
“I must have forgotten to close the gate last night,” Regina thought as she pulled a sweatshirt over her head. Mama was planning to sell the carnations at the fair next week. But Buttermilk was eating the flowers. Regina hurried outside and grabbed the lead rope on the wall.
“Why can’t you stay in the field?” she called to Buttermilk as she headed across the yard to the carnation garden. Buttermilk still stood there chewing the tender flowers.
“When I grow up, I’ll be an artist and paint pictures all day,” annoyed Regina thought. “I’ll not own a cow. Too much trouble.” Regina was fond of painting since the day she had memory. She would like to not only help with family but see birds and flowers alive under her brush.
Just as Regina was about to throw the lead rope onto Buttermilk’s collar, the family dog Blue, rounded the corner of the house, barking loudly and furiously. Buttermilk couldn’t stand it and took off, tearing through the carnations. It finally ran through the open gate and into the field outside. “Thank goodness!” Regina said as she closed the gate and secured the lock. But, as she turned to look at the flower garden, most of the carnations were either eaten or trampled (踩踏).
Mama and Dad came out of the house. “What’s going on?” Mama asked. She looked sadly at her garden. “I forgot to close the gate,” Regina said. “I’m so sorry.” “I know you are.” Mama sighed and gave Regina a hug.
Regina’s heart was heavy as she went back into the house. Mama had prepared much for the fair but now half of her efforts were in vain. Regina decided to think of a way to make it up to her mother. The problem tasked Regina’s mind. Could she plant other flowers in a week? Not enough time. Could she make use of the carnations in pieces? Not enough magic. Regina found no way out.
