When You Snooze (贪睡), You Lose!

Last Wednesday, I set my alarm for seven o’clock in the morning, just like I always did. But I’d gone to bed a little later than usual, so when it went off, I rolled over and hit the snooze button, thinking I’d have five more minutes of sleep before I got up. For some reason, the snooze alarm didn’t go off. When I saw that it was 7:45, I couldn’t believe it!

Since I was late, I skipped breakfast, and I didn’t make the bed or straighten up my room even though it was part of the “house rules”.

I ran as fast as I could to catch the school bus, but even so, I missed it. Luckily for me, my father hadn’t left for work yet, so I asked him for a ride to school. He wasn’t too happy about it because it meant he would be late for an appointment he had set up. So he was annoyed with me, especially since it was the second time in two weeks that I had missed the school bus. We rode to school in total silence.

By the time I got to school, the bell had already rung, so I had to go to the office to get a “late pass” before I could be admitted to class. That’s when I remembered that I hadn’t asked my father to write a note for my being late. He’d been in such a bad mood, and I knew that this was especially directed at me, so I decided there was no way I could call him now. Besides, he was sure to be in his meeting.

So, there I was, sitting out the first hour in the principal’s office. Things were really starting to snowball but it was only the beginning. Since I was absent from my first-hour class, I missed my science test. My teacher said I couldn’t make up the test since I was absent without leave. But I really needed that test to improve my grade point average. My dad promised to give me half of the money for a car if my grades improved by the end of this semester. So I started thinking about not being able to buy a car, and I got even more upset.

7 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

When I was in middle school, my family moved to Seattle, where my parents started their new business — a small grocery store downstairs my house. As a girl of shy and reserved nature, I had to take a fresh start to fit into the sophisticated city life.

One sunny day, my school announced an exciting event, a talent show for the local food bank. Students were encouraged to showcase their unique talents in front of the public in the city hall on National Day. A buzz of excitement fed the school as everyone began preparing for the big day. Deep down, I felt a spark of curiosity and a desire to participate. However, my self-doubt held me back, “I don’t have any special skills to share.”

Days turned into weeks, and the talent show drew closer. I couldn’t shake the upsetting feeling until one day, Emma, one of the most popular girls in my class, came to me while I was helping in the grocery store after class. “How about singing together in the talent show?” She grinned, “I heard you singing a tune, along the way back home. I can’t help following you here.” Gosh, I couldn’t believe my ears. Emma, with personality and popularity, acknowledged my little talent. Since Emma had the world’s prettiest voice, I felt like being favoured by fortune.

“You two? The talent show for the food bank?” My mum bent towards us and her face lit up. “A big occasion.” Then a light bulb seemed to go in her head. “Why not practise right now upstairs? I bet you’ll be a perfect match.” Winking at us, she seemed to know we were thinking alike.

Emma and I embarked on rehearsing almost every single day after school. We brainstormed, exchanged ideas and rehearsed the scene. As the days rolled by, I was feeling pretty good about our act. But the day before the performance, Emma called that she had an acute stomachache and was not in any shape to perform.

文章大意:本文是记叙文。文章讲述一位住在北京的美国人,在劳动节期乘铁上海,感受到了高铁的好处,同时也希望美国能建造一样方便有用的铁路系统。

As a long-time resident of Beijing, I have always wanted to travel around and see more of China. And I finally found my big chance on the Labor Day holiday,     1     people would have seven days off, so I made a trip to Shanghai.

It was my first time that I     2     (travel) by not only rail but high-speed rail as well, which made this trip special. Many Americans aren’t used to     3     (take) public transportation, instead mainly using cars to get around. For me, riding to Shanghai by train was especially fascinating since I could     4     (expose) to different kinds of beautiful scenery and towns along the way through the spacious windows. In particular, I have always been a fan of the uniquely-shaped     5     (mountain) of China, enjoying their elegant shapes as they make the peaceful horizon more attractive. Another benefit of riding on trains was the spacious legroom which allowed me     6     (relax) more easily during my trip.

Throughout the journey, I couldn’t help considering it to be a good idea for the US to build a     7     (similar) useful and convenient railway system. The outspread cities in the US make     8     easy to see how the US would benefit from this kind of public investment. This could lead to less     9     (dependent) on car ownership and have a positive impact     10     both the economy and environment.

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。主要讲述了作者从小就在父亲的影响下学会了做事要达到标准。带着这种追求,作者克服了音乐之路上的障碍,也在家庭生活中达到了为人父母的标准。

10 . When I was a kid, my family farmed 200 acres with mules (骡子), and the most naughty one was Tobe. It’d frequently jump out and run around. But when asked why he liked it, Dad would say, “When it comes to farm work, Tobe comes up to standard.”

Dad died when I was 11, and we had to sell the farm. Those were hard years, but Mom managed to give me my first music lesson. Before long our neighbors liked my songs so much that I decided to make a career in singing.

At 17 I left home for a radio station in Jackson and this job made me discover how inexperienced I was. I made up my mind that I would practice until I came up to standard. I took a job as a driver. With 8 hours spent in the car, I could spend the rest of the time practicing. Finally, when I was good enough, I began playing for audiences nationwide.

By now, I had two kids and I knew what a family was without a dad, so I quit the performances and entered the most depressing (令人消沉的) years of my life with all the clothing, homework, and duties around the house. That was when I thought about Tobe. It was self-willed, but in the field, where it mattered, Tobe came up to standard. So I started listening and made a discovery. My kids’ lifestyle may be different. But where standards are concerned (涉及) — for things like honesty and courage — they often do better than some of us.

Not long ago my son Dick told me he was going to apply for a job at a TV station. “ I know the general manager. I’ll put in a good word for you,” I said. “I’d rather go alone,” he replied. “If I’m not good enough yet to do the job, I shouldn’t get it.” Then I realized he wanted to be up to standard. I felt proud the minute he came home shouting, “ Dad, I got the job!”

1. Why did the author’s father like Tobe?
A.It was full of life.B.It was good at farm work.
C.It enjoyed farm work very much.D.It set the standard for others.
2. What made the author realize his inexperience in music?
A.Performing for audiences.B.Taking the job as a driver.
C.Working in a radio station.D.Having his first music lesson.
3. What did the author discover about his kids?
A.They led a healthy lifestyle.B.They were good at listening.
C.They were concerned about standards.D.They had their own shining points.
4. How did Dick react to the author’s offer of help with the job?
A.He thought it useless.B.He was proud of the chance.
C.He turned it down.D.He sought further advice.
