A team at MIT (麻省理工学院) has created an AI technology. It can reproduce works of art. This successful system,     1     (call) RePaint, uses a combination of 3D printing and deep learning to recreate complex paintings.

It could     2     (use) to remake famous artworks for the home, or even to produce accurate copies to protect originals from     3     (suffer) damage when hung in museums.

“The value of fine art has     4     (rapid) increased in recent years, and there’s an increased tendency (趋势) for it to be locked up in warehouses (仓库) away from the public eye,” said one of     5     engineers of RePaint.” We’re building the technology     6     (change) this trend, and to create inexpensive reproductions (复制品)     7     can be enjoyed by all.” The team used RePaint to reproduce a number of     8     (painting).

At this time, the reproductions are only about the size of a business card, due     9     the time-costly nature of printing. In the future, they will become     10     (large) than they are now.

6 . Awake? Here Is How to Return to Sleep

It is usual for people to wake up a few times during the night. Older people often get up to go to the bathroom. Waking at night usually is not a problem.

But what about some other people? If it happens a few times a week, there may be a troublesome reason.     1    . Such sleep difficulties are called insomnia (失眠). You may wake up, look at the clock and worry about your work. There may be stressful things on your mind. These feelings may activate a stress hormone in your body. If you worry about not sleeping, it may make it harder to fall asleep.

What to do.

If you are awake 25 minutes or more,     2    . Gentle stretches or breathing exercises might help. Meditation (冥想) also may work. You may sit on a couch and read a book or magazine in dim light. Do not read on a smartphone or a table t in rayless place.

Try to go back to sleep.

    3    . Coffee can stay in your digestive system well into the evening.

Napping lowers your drive to fall asleep in the evening. Avoid napping late in the day. Nap no later than early afternoon.     4    

Try to keep to a routine schedule for sleep. There is a problem when you go to bed and wake up at different times. Studies have shown that irregular bedtimes may lead to insomnia.     5    , called circadian rhythms (昼夜节律). They work on 24-hour cycles.

If you get up during the night to go to the bathroom, limit how much water or liquids you drink a few hours before bedtime.

When I was in middle school, my family moved to Seattle, where my parents started their new business — a small grocery store downstairs my house. As a girl of shy and reserved nature, I had to take a fresh start to fit into the sophisticated city life.

One sunny day, my school announced an exciting event, a talent show for the local food bank. Students were encouraged to showcase their unique talents in front of the public in the city hall on National Day. A buzz of excitement fed the school as everyone began preparing for the big day. Deep down, I felt a spark of curiosity and a desire to participate. However, my self-doubt held me back, “I don’t have any special skills to share.”

Days turned into weeks, and the talent show drew closer. I couldn’t shake the upsetting feeling until one day, Emma, one of the most popular girls in my class, came to me while I was helping in the grocery store after class. “How about singing together in the talent show?” She grinned, “I heard you singing a tune, along the way back home. I can’t help following you here.” Gosh, I couldn’t believe my ears. Emma, with personality and popularity, acknowledged my little talent. Since Emma had the world’s prettiest voice, I felt like being favoured by fortune.

“You two? The talent show for the food bank?” My mum bent towards us and her face lit up. “A big occasion.” Then a light bulb seemed to go in her head. “Why not practise right now upstairs? I bet you’ll be a perfect match.” Winking at us, she seemed to know we were thinking alike.

Emma and I embarked on rehearsing almost every single day after school. We brainstormed, exchanged ideas and rehearsed the scene. As the days rolled by, I was feeling pretty good about our act. But the day before the performance, Emma called that she had an acute stomachache and was not in any shape to perform.

I was completely knocked out by the news.

Finally came the big moment.

As a long-time resident of Beijing, I have always wanted to travel around and see more of China. And I finally found my big chance on the Labor Day holiday,     1     people would have seven days off, so I made a trip to Shanghai.

It was my first time that I     2     (travel) by not only rail but high-speed rail as well, which made this trip special. 10 . When I was a kid, my family farmed 200 acres with mules (骡子), and the most naughty one was Tobe. It’d frequently jump out and run around. But when asked why he liked it, Dad would say, “When it comes to farm work, Tobe comes up to standard.”

That was when I thought about Tobe. It was self-willed, but in the field, where it mattered, Tobe came up to standard. So I started listening and made a discovery. My kids’ lifestyle may be different. But where standards are concerned (涉及) — for things like honesty and courage — they often do better than some of us.

Not long ago my son Dick told me he was going to apply for a job at a TV station. “ I know the general manager. I’ll put in a good word for you,” I said. “I’d rather go alone,” he replied. “If I’m not good enough yet to do the job, I shouldn’t get it.” Then I realized he wanted to be up to standard. I felt proud the minute he came home shouting, “ Dad, I got the job!”
