4 . In 1945, 23-year-old Joan Hinton was one of the few female nuclear physicists joining in the Manhattan Project, an American project set up in 1942 to develop an atom bomb. Even as she rejoiced in the project’s success, she was deeply shocked when the U.S. dropped two bombs in Japan in 1945 during World War II. She then quit the project and left the U.S..
In 1948, she managed to travel to Yan’an, where she married her boyfriend Erwin Engst. Her husband got his first impressions of China from the book Red Star Over China by Edgar Snow. He came to China as a member of the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration in 1946 and went on to serve as an expert on farm equipment in Yan’an. “My father kept on writing letters to my mom, telling her to come to China and that ‘China was about to climb a hill. If you arrive late, you’ll miss the bus’,” Fred Engst, son of Hinton, said.
Hinton and her husband lived a simple life in China. During her time in Yan’an, she only stood out as a foreigner, dressed in ordinary clothes. The villagers treated the U.S. scientist like they would be a family member. During one Chinese New Year’s party in the village she lived in, Hinton shared her sense of humor by amusing the locals with her performances using a northern Shaanxi dialect (方言).
The couple witnessed the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949. Hinton, who held high hopes of making milk available to the Chinese population, devoted herself to the improvement of agricultural machinery and the milk industry at large. She applied her scientific skills to developing a continuous-flow automatic milk pasteurizer (巴氏杀菌机) and tending to about 200 cows in the following years.
Hinton was truly devoted to everything she did, whether in nuclear physics or the milk industry.

6 . A team of Japanese scientists has discovered genes that enable rice to survive high water, providing hope for better rice production in lowland areas that are affected by flooding.
The genes, called SNORKEL genes, help rice grow longer stems to deal with higher water levels. Deepwater rice generally produces low-yield rice plants. But the researchers report they have succeeded in introducing the genes to rice varieties that are higher-yield.
According to the report, as water levels rise, accumulation of the plant hormone(激素)makes the SNORKEL genes stat working, making stem growth more rapid. When the researchers introduced the genes into rice that does not normally survive in deep water, they were able to rescue the plants from drowning.
Motoyuki Ashikari, who headed the project, aid his team is hoping to use the gene on long grain rice widely used in Southeast Asia to help stabilize production in flood areas where rice with the food-resistant gene is low in production--about one-third to one-quarter that of regular rice.
"Scientifically the gene that we found is are but clear proof of a biological ability to adapt to a difficult environment, " he said. "It's a genetic strategy specifically to survive flooding. "
High water levels in rice field can be a serious problem. In some areas, rains can cause water levels to rise dangerously high during the growing season and flash flooding can fully submerge plants for days or even weeks.
Rice is a main food for billions. and while productivity has increased dramatically since the 1960s, yields must be doubled to meet projected requirements by 2050. More than 30 percent of Asian and 40 percent of African rice land is either lowland field or deep water field.
Laurentius of Utrecht University said the study is significant because high-yield rice varieties cannot survive extremes of foods. "The introduction of these genes into high-yield varieties, using advanced breeding strategies, promises to improve the quality and quantity of rice, "he said.

8 . For many people, moths are dust - colored pests that eat our clothes and disturb us by flying around lights after dark. Not for artist Joseph Scheer. The pictures he creates bring out the beauty of moths, with colors, shapes, and patterns that have never been seen before so clearly. “Digital tools let you see things you'd never see just looking with your eyes,” Scheer says. Scheer's pictures have been displayed around the world, and one reaction is heard everywhere: “People insist, ‘No, that can't be a moth,’” says Scheer.
Scheer's work began with a moth hunt in the state of New York. Scheer would leave the lights on and the windows open overnight at his university office, and then collect the moths that had flown in. When the building cleaners at the university complained, he moved the hunt to his friend Mark Klingensmith's yard. They set up two lights shining over a plastic container on a white sheet. Then moths appeared from the darkness, flew into the sheet, and fell into the plastic container. “We got a different species every night,” Scheer says. “The patterns and colors were unbelievable.”
After the hunt, they used a powerful scanner to get detailed pictures of moths. Small moths presented special challenges.
The scanner records so much information that a single moth can take 20 minutes to scan. A scan of just two small moths fills an entire CD. All that information means the size of the picture can be increased by 2, 700 percent but still keep all the details and appear perfectly clear. You'd need a microscope to see the details shown in Scheer's prints.
Scheer's work is not only a new form of art. He has also made a valuable contribution to the record of the moths around him. He has helped identify more than a thousand different species. “Not from Alaska or the Amazon,” Klingensmith says. “All from one backyard.”
