3 . Recently we celebrated my grandmother’s 90th birthday. Family members traveled to my hometown to visit her. This was the first time in many years that I had seen so many of them. Though this was an opportunity to see family, many people did not make it. Honestly, living far from hometown, I had missed many family gatherings. But this one made me realize how much I was really missing.
It seemed strange when I was looking at the faces, realizing whom they were and greeting them with open arms. After chatting for a while, we caught up on each other’s news. Several relatives suggested having a family reunion soon if everyone wasn’t so busy. But my grandmother’s generation was much busier, yet still found time to gather. They understood the importance of visiting one another. They knew time is flying and that those you care about most won’t be here forever.
Today, we focus on our careers and raising our kids. Our extended family isn’t the center it once was. Besides, we keep in touch on social media. But what we really miss are the potato salad, the moments of laughter and sudden bursts of excitement when we hug someone we haven’t seen for over 10 years. Although the next get-together is always a year or so away, people aren’t goods and everyone has an expiration (到期) date.
I left my grandmother’s party with a much better sense of who I am and where I come from. I spent valuable time with people who contributed to who I am today. I had forgotten how much I love them and I was reminded how much I am loved.

A little girl often lived alone in her house. Her mother was killed in a traffic accident and her father used to work far away. A maid(女仆)used to stay in the house with her in the morning and evening, but she used to live alone in her house during the day.
One day an elderly postman knocked on the door and said,“Take the letter.”As soon as he said this, a little girl’s voice echoed(回响) from inside,“I am coming now. Please wait.”But even after 5 minutes no one came. The postman again said,“Is there anyone who will take the letter? I have to go to many more places.”
The girl replied,“Uncle, if you are in a hurry, please put the letter under the door. I am coming, but it will take some more time.”
The old postman replied,“No, I am waiting. It is a registered letter. So someone’s signature is also needed.” After about 10 minutes, the door opened. Obviously, the postman was a bit angry about the delay. He was about to shout at the girl when he was shocked to see that in front of him was a little girl without legs. The postman quietly gave the letter and took her signature and left.
In a month or two whenever her mail came, the postman would knock and call for the girl and then wait patiently at the door. Gradually, interaction and attachment grew between them. The little girl noticed that the postman used to come barefoot to deliver mails.
Rainy season came., One day when the postman left after giving a letter to the girl; hisfoot prints were left on the wet soil. The little girl came out with a paper and put it on the print and took down the picture of his feet. The next day, she asked the maid to get shoes of that size and keep them in house.
Before Diwali Festival(排灯节)was about to come, the postman started thinking that he shouldn’t meet the girl empty handed during festival. After much thought, he bought a small chocolate for the little girl.

6 . Staying positive through the cold season could be the best defence against getting sick, a new American study suggests.
In an experiment that exposed healthy volunteers to a cold or flu virus, researchers found that people with a generally sunny character were less likely to fall ill.
The findings, published in the journal Psychosomatic Medicine, build on evidence that a “positive emotional style” can help protect us from the common cold and other illnesses.
“People with a positive emotional style may have different immune (免疫的) responses to the virus,” explained lead study author Dr Sheldon Cohen of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. “And when they do get a cold, they may experience their illness as less severe.”
Cohen and his colleagues had found in a previous study that happier people seemed less susceptible (易受影响的) to catching a cold, but some questions remained as to whether the emotional quality itself had the effect.
For the new study, the researchers had 193 healthy adults complete standard measures of personality qualities, physical health and “emotional style”.
Those who tended to be happy, energetic and easy-going were judged as having a positive emotional style, while those who were often unhappy, tense and hostile (敌意的) had a negative style.
Afterwards, the researchers gave them nose drops containing either a cold virus or a particular flu virus that causes flu-like symptoms. Over the next six days the volunteers reported on any aches, pains, sneezing they had. Cohen and his colleagues found that happy people were less likely to develop a cold.
What’s more, when happy folks did develop a cold, their symptoms were less severe than what would be expected based on objective (客观的) measures.
In contrast, people with negative characters were not at increased risk of developing a cold based on objective measures, though they did tend to get down about their symptoms.
“We find that it’s really positive emotions that have the big effect”, Cohen said, “not the negative ones.”
So can a bad-tempered person fight a cold by deciding to be happy?

A holiday in Penang is an annual affair for my family. My parents grew up in Penang and are very fond of Penang food. In December every year, we drive up to the island to spend three days visiting their favorite food spots.
This year, we started our journey up north on a Friday morning. The drive was interrupted by stops at Bidor Town and Kampar so it took us six hours to reach our destination. We stayed at one of the hotels in Batu Ferringhi. The beach was just a short walk from the hotel entrance and our rooms had a lovely view of the sea. We spent our first evening playing on the beach. After dinner, we returned to our rooms to play Monopoly. My parents have a rule for our holidays which is that we should spend time doing things together. There was to be no TV and no Internet.
The next morning, we went to Bukit Bendera and then spent the rest of the afternoon in town visiting our favorite hawker stalls (小贩摊位). As we were having tea at a shop, we overheard people talking about an earthquake near Sumatera, an island in Indonesia. But we didn’t care too much. Afterwards we headed back to the hotel and then went to the beach. We took a walk along the beach, picking up seashells along the way. Suddenly, I noticed a strange thing. The sea seemed to be retreating (后退) from the shore. I felt a little uneasy, so I asked my father to look at the curious occurrence. My father took one look and went pale. We saw a grey line in the distance moving towards the shore. It seemed to grow taller by the second. It was a tsunami (海啸)!
