When danger is coming, firefighters are heroes who put their lives at risk to keep everyone safe. But in calmer moments, they can also go the extra mile for someone with something so simple yet impactful.

Many fall in love with firefighting as a child by riding a truck and visiting a fire station. Whether he does or doesn’t grow up to become a firefighter, he will know he is loved and accepted the way he is. This is especially heartwarming when children are at the receiving end of firefighters’ kindness.

Now, one firefighter went out of his way to make sure that a kid didn’t feel left out when his team spent a day with some children from a kindergarten.

These children spent the day in getting a close look at the fire station and the work of firefighters. First, led by firefighters, they paid a visit to the fire station, which made them feel excited. Later, in order to make the children have a more real experience, the station decided to let the young tourists wear red fireman helmets (头盔).

When they wore the red fireman helmets, everyone was so delighted and cheers broke out. But one child was standing with low spirits and didn’t wear a red helmet. It seemed that the child wasn’t welcome, which may influence the child’s confidence. That made the firefighters surprised.

“One child didn’t wear a red fireman helmet. No enough helmets?” One of the firefighters asked the children’s teacher.

“No. Well, his hair was in a high ponytail (马尾辫), preventing him from putting his helmet on. And he likes the high ponytail very much and doesn’t want to break it,” the teacher replied.

“I see. Maybe we can do something, can we mark the width of the child’s ponytail and cut a hole in the tiny helmet to make sure his hair fit s through the hole?” the firefighter said.

Hearing that, the teacher thought it was a good idea.

With the help of the teacher, the firefighter started carrying out his plan.

I remember wondering if we should even be friends when I found out that my new friend Karina did not share my opinions about some stuff. It was hard to imagine disagreeing with her about anything, because when we first met, we got along so great.

It was as if we’d known each other forever. Whenever we got to pick a partner at camp, we picked each other. Whenever we had a break, we hung out together. “That’s amazing,” I said. “A special kind of woodpecker (啄木鸟)makes those holes to store acorns (橡子).”

“Pretty cool! ”said our counselor, Miguel. “Now, let’s all be sure to keep this magical forest as clean and perfect. Don’t forget to put your trash and recyclables in the bins.”

And that’s when things got complicated. “Hey,” said our friend LeVar. “Have you guys heard that shopping-mall rumor (传闻)? They want to cut down a bunch of those trees to make room for a shopping center.”

“That’s terrible!” I said. “We have to stop that.”

“I disagree,” said Karina. “My parents said the shopping center would make new jobs for people.”

“But think of all the birds and squirrels that would lose their homes!” I said. “I want people to have jobs, but not if it means cutting down trees.”

“Don’t you think people’s jobs are more important than trees?” Karina asked.

“Can’t we figure out how to make jobs without destroying nature?” I answered.

“You know,” Karina said, super seriously, “maybe we’re not quite as alike as we thought.”

I sighed sadly.

5 . The coast of the State of Maine is one of the most irregular in the world. A straight line running from the southernmost coastal city to the northernmost coastal city would measure about 225 miles. If you followed the coastline between these points, you would travel more than ten times as far. This irregularity is the result of what is called a drowned coastline. The term comes from the glacial (冰川的) activity of the Ice Age. At that time, the whole area that is now Maine was part of a mountain range that towered above the sea. As the glacier declined, however, it applied enormous force on those mountains, and they sank into the sea.

As the mountains sank, ocean water charged over the lowest parts of the remaining land. And the highest parts of the former mountain range, nearest the shore, remained as islands. Marine fossils found here are 225 feet above sea level indicating the level of the shoreline prior to the glacier.

The 2,500-mile-long rocky and jagged (锯齿状的) coastline of Maine keeps watching over nearly 2,000 islands. Many of these islands are tiny and uninhabited, but many are home to blooming communities. Mt. Desert Island is one of the largest, most beautiful of the Maine coast islands left behind by the glacier. Measuring 16 miles by 12 miles, Mt. Desert was very nearly formed as two distinct islands. It is split almost in half by Somes Sound, a very deep and very narrow stretch of water seven miles long.

For years, Mt. Desert Island, particularly its major settlement, Bar Harbor, has afforded summer homes for the wealthy. Recently, though, Bar Harbor has become a new arts community as well. But the best part of the island is the unspoiled forest land known as Acadia National Park. Since the island sits on the border between two different geographical zones, the park supports the plants and animals of both zones. It also lies in a major bird migration lane and is a resting spot for many birds.

Sora: OpenAl will now let you create videos from verbal cues

Artificial intelligence leader OpenAI introduced a new AI model called Sora which it claims can create “realistic” and “imaginative” 60-second videos from quick text instructions. In a blog post on Wednesday, the company said Sora is capable of generating videos up to 60 seconds in length from text instructions,     1     (serve) up scenes with multiple characters, specific types of motion, and detailed background details.

This is the latest effort from the company behind the viral chatbot ChatGPT,     2     continues to push the generative AI movement forward.     3     “multi-modal models” are not new and text-to-video models already exist, what sets this apart is the length and accuracy that OpenAI claims Sora to have, according to Reece Hayden, a senior analyst at market research firm ABI Research. Hayden said these types of AI models     4     have a big impact on digital entertainment.
