4 . This is the age of being busy. Many of us live in busy places and have busy lives. Even the roads are busy as we try to get from here to there. Adults are busy going to jobs and taking care of their families. Kids are busy, too, going to school and doing a lot of homework after school and on weekends.

Busy isn't bad, necessarily. If you are not busy enough you might be bored. But if you are too busy, you might break down. For example, if you have a soccer game that runs late on a school night and you haven't eaten dinner or done your homework, that's a not-so-fun kind of busy. We wanted to know what kids thought, so we did a Kids Poll about being busy with 882 girls and boys aged 9 to 13.

Almost all of them said they felt stressed because they were too busy. About half said they felt this way once in a while or some of the time. But 17% said they felt this way most of the time and 24% said they felt this way all the time! Oh dear, that’s no fun.

Only 4% of kids said they wanted less free time and 18% said they already had just the right amount. But, no big surprise, 61% of kids wish they had a lot more free time. If they had more time, most would spend it hanging out or playing with friends.

Often, adults plan large parts of a kid's day, especially during the school year. Kids can't tell their parents they'll be skipping school today to get more free time! But they can tell their parents they'd like to play a game or read a book during their free time instead of watching TV.

1. What do we know from the first paragraph?
A.The busy roads are caused by travelers.
B.Many of us nowadays live a busy life.
C.Adults must be easy without their jobs.
D.Kids have no time to do homework.
2. The author shows the feeling of being too busy by       .
A.giving an exampleB.telling a story
C.holding a gameD.raising a question
3. What has the Kids Poll research shown?
A.All of the kids felt stressed when they were too busy.
B.The kids felt it was no fun doing the experiment.
C.More than half of the kids hoped to have more free time.
D.About 50% of the kids always felt stressed in their life.
4. What would be the best title for the passage?
A.The reasons why people are too busy.
B.The disadvantages of being too busy.
C..How to plan kids' free time at weekends.
D.Giving kids a right amount of free time.

5 . Soon computers and other machines will be able to remember you by looking at your eyes! The programme works because everyone's eyes are different. So in the future you won't have to remember a number when you want to use a machine or take money out of a bank. You'll just have to look at the machine and it will be able to tell who you are.

The eye-recognition programme is already being tested in shops and banks in the USA, Britain, Spain, Italy and Turkey. Soon, this technology will take the place of all other ways of finding out who people are.

However, scientists are working on other systems. Machines will soon be able to know you from the shape of your face or hand or even your smell. We already have machines that can tell who you are from your voice or the mark made by your fingers.

Eye-recognition is better than other kinds because your eyes don't change as you get older, or get dirty like hands or fingers. And even twins have different eyes, so the programme can be up to 94% correct, depending on how good the technology is. Some programmes may only be right 51% of the time. In Britain, it was found that 91% of people who had tried it said that they liked the idea of eye-recognition. In the future your computer will be looking you in the eye, so smile!

1. If you want to draw money from a bank, you will _______.
A.remember the numberB.look at the machine
C.tell the staff who you areD.show your ID card
2. According to the passage, the eye-recognition programme is already being tested in some countries EXCEPT_______.
A.USAB.UK
C.ItalyD.France
3. What can we infer from the passage?
A.The eye-recognition technology has taken the place of all other kinds of methods.
B.The eye-recognition programme can be up to 91% correct.
C.There are machines telling who you are from your finger mark.
D.Eye-recognition is better because people's eyes do change as they age.
4. Why does the author write this passage?
A.To tell people some ways of recognizing a person.
B.To introduce the eye-recognition programme.
C.To prove the eye-recognition programme useful.
D.To encourage people to use the eye-recognition programme.

7 . True happiness lies in rewarding relationships, not material wealth, according to new research. Scientists have said that a close circle of friends and family is most important for happiness, and that owning things such as iPhones, computers, being wealthy and owning a sports car do not provide the same level of satisfaction.

The study was done by psychologists at the Sahlgrenska Academy and Lund University, in Sweden. The experts analyzed(分析) articles in Swedish newspapers published in 2010 and recorded which words most often occurred in the same articles as the Swedish word for happiness. In this way, they could know our common happiness.

Co-author Dr Danilo Garcia, a researcher at the Sahlgrenska Academy’s Centre for Ethics, Law and Mental Health, said, “It’s relationships that are most important, not material things that we possess, and this is in line with other findings in happiness research.”

The study, which contained more than 10 million words, showed that terms such as “grandmother” and personal pronouns such as “you”, “me”, “us” and “them” often emerge in the same article as the Swedish word for happiness. Researchers found that words such as “iPhone”, “millions” and “Google” almost never appear with the word “happiness”.

The study is a part of a larger research project on how people describe both positive and negative events in their lives. The researchers believe that the word analysis reflects a common perception among the members of our society as to what should make us happy.

Dr Danilo Garcia said, “Just as the Beatles sang, most people understand that money can’t buy you happiness or love. But even if we can understand the importance of close and warm relationships at a social level, it isn’t certain that everyone is aware that such relationships are actually necessary for our own personal happiness.”

1. New research mainly shows that      .
A.various things can lead to happiness in people
B.having some close friends is very important to us
C.owning expensive things can actually make us unhappy
D.rewarding relationships make us happy instead of material wealth

A.explain something new
B.are unbelievable to many people
C.prove material things are unimportant
D.confirm previous findings in happiness research
3. Dr Danilo Garcia doubts whether      .
A.money really buys us happiness or love
B.rewarding relationships really lead to personal happiness
C.close and warm relationships are important at a social level
D.all people know rewarding relationships lead to personal happiness
4. How did the experts arrive at their findings?
A.By doing surveys.
B.By doing experiments.
C.By analyzing printed articles.
D.By referring to previous studies.

8 . Have you ever wondered how your favorite NBA team received its famous name? All NBA teams have an interesting story or a history behind their names. Some of the names reflect the city’s culture or history, others came from previous owners and many were selected through “Name the Team” contests.

For teams like Los Angeles and Utah, the names were not always a reflection of the city. Even though Los Angeles has no lakes, the Laker name has been a city treasure for almost 40 years. Before going to Los Angeles, the team originated in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In 1948, team officials chose the name for its direct relationship to the state’s motto, “The Land of 10,000 Lakes.” The team name went unchanged after moving to Los Angeles in 1960.

Because Utah’s team originated in New Orleans, Louisiana, it was called the Jazz. In 1974, New Orleans club officials chose the name to represent the city for its reputation as the “jazz capital of the world.” The name stayed with the team even after finding a new home in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1979.

The Chicago Bull’s original owner, Richard Klein, named the team the Bulls. He picked the name because a fighting bull is relentless(不屈不挠的), and never quits. Klein, who founded the club in1966, believed these qualities were necessary for a championship team and hoped his Chicago athletes would live up to the team name.

Miami chose the Heat from names such as the Sharks, Beaches, and Barracudas. The name Magic was the winner for the Orlando team because the city’s tourism slogan is “Come to the Magic.”

Tradition played a big part in naming the New York Knicks. Chosen by the club’s founder Ned Irish, the Knicks’name was already important in New York's history. The first organized team in baseball history was named the New York Knickerbockers or the Knickerbockers Nine.

In 1967, the Indian Pacers selected their team name in a different way from most other teams. Their decision was based on what they wanted to accomplish in the NBA. Team officials chose the Pacers name because the organization wanted to set the “pace” in professional basketball.

1. Which of the names reflects the culture of the city New Orleans.
A.The Heat.B.The Indian Pacers.
C.The Jazz.D.The Sharks.
2. According to Paragraph 2, we know      .
A.the Laker team was first set up in Los Angeles
B.Minnesota is a state with a lot of lakes
C.Los Angeles is famous for its lakes
D.the Laker team has been in Los Angeles for less than 40 years
3. Richard Klein named the team the Bulls because he hoped his team would      .
A.be as strong as bulls
B.set the “pace” in professional basketball
C.be Number 1 forever
D.keep fighting and never give up
4. How did the Heat get the name?
A.It came from the names of other teams.
B.It was named after Miami’s motto.
C.It was named by its original owner.
D.Its owner came up with the name by accident.

9 . Listening to music is considered a good thing for adults. Indeed it is. Scientific studies have proved it. Music has so many good effects on our body, mind and mood that this world will certainly not be a good place without music. Then, is music good for children? Some parents think so and let their children learn or listen to music. But some parents don't know the importance of music to children. Here are some reasons why music is important to children.

First, music is good for children’s intelligence. Studies have proved that children who learn music are likely to have higher intelligence than those who have no interest in or dislike music. This is because the brain gets stimulated (刺激) by the rhythm and tone of music.

Music also has soothing (抚慰的) effect on children and helps remove their stress. Today’s children are under a lot of stress from schoolwork. Being under too much stress impairs children’s health. Luckily, listening to music can help them feel better.

Music can improve children’s moods. Some children are sad by nature. They seem to be lost in their own thoughts and don’t take interest in their surroundings. In such cases,a method known as “music therapy” comes to their rescue. It changes their moods and places a new kind of spirit in them.

Music is also a universal language that children ought to learn. Our world has become a global village. People are getting more and more interested in other cultures and countries. Music can help them in understanding foreign cultures.

Now we can say that music is very important not only to adults but also to children. So children should be encouraged to learn music or listen to music.

1. By mentioning scientific studies in Paragraph 1, the author wants to show       .
A.Children should listen to music
B.Why adults should listen to music
C.Listening to music is only good for adults

10 . Children who use screens for seven hours or more a day are showing signs that their brain cortex(大脑皮层)is thinning prematurely(过早地), according to a new major US study.

The ongoing $300 million research is funded by the National Institute of Health and shows results of the effects of technology on children.   The aim of the study, called Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development, is also to show how screen time affects emotional development and mental health. The researchers also determined that children who spend more than two hours of daily screen time score lower on thinking and language tests.

Researchers made the early findings by scanning the brains of 4, 500 children.

The brain cortex is the outermost layer of neural(神经中枢的) tissue that processes information from the physical world. It is critical for cognitive functions such as perception(直觉), language, memory and consciousness but thins as we mature into old age.

Though the difference was significant from participants who spent less time using smart devices, the study director cautioned against drawing a conclusion.

Dr Gaya Dowling, an NIH doctor working on the project, cautioned against drawing a conclusion because they aren’t completely sure it’s being caused by the increased use of modern technology. They won’t be able to draw a definitive outcome until they follow them over the course of several years.

Dr Dowling said: “It won’t be until we follow them over time that we will see if there are outcomes that are associated with the differences that we’re seeing in this single snapshot.”

A 2014 study showed that there is a direct correlation between the thickness of the brain cortex and IQ score. The cortex begins to thin after the age of five or six as part of the normal aging process.

The findings showed that people with a significant increase in IQ did not have the expected cortical thinning and people with a significant decrease in IQ had exaggerated(夸张) cortical(皮质的)thinning.

A major data release of the initial data is scheduled for early 2019.

1. What belongs to the findings of the new major US study?
A.Screen time can result in a smaller brain.
B.The brain cortex gets thinner as we mature into old age.
C.Too much exposure to screen can lead to a poorer health.
D.Children who are interested in computer are academically poor.
2. Why is Dr Gaya Dowling against drawing a conclusion?
A.There are some doubts about their findings.
B.He thinks that further study is needed.
C.The number of the participants is not large enough.
D.They should ask for the government’s permission.
3. What is the finding of the 2014 study?
A.The brain cortex has much to do with IQ score.
B.The brain cortex’s thickness is determined by IQ.
C.Different people have different cortical thinning.
D.Aging is a natural process for creatures.
4. What will probably happen when a person reaches the age of five or six?
A.His IQ score will get higher and higher.
B.He will be more addicted to modern technology.
C.He will show more interest in modern technology.
D.His brain cortex will become thinner and thinner.
