Many people have _______ experiences with their hairdressers. I’ve had my hair cut by Claire Miller for more than 15 years. She’s taken me through all kinds of _______, and she’s helped me find a totally new look now during the post-chemotherapy (化疗后) period with dyed blonde hair! _______ hairstyles, there have been communications about the joys and trials of motherhood, the _______ of health problems and changes in our careers and lives — the stuff of 15 years that we have _______ in the three salons Claire has worked in.

While she cut my hair recently, we chatted about that special __________ that forms between hairdressers and their clients. “You hear so many stories from them, and sometimes you feel like a counselor __________ a hairdresser. You assess their needs, and you know how to react to them,”says Claire.

For Claire, the customer interaction is something she loves about the job and that she has __________ developed throughout her working life. “It’s about being human and __________ about people. A lot of my clients are my friends and like family now. It’s my __________ to cut their hair, making them look and feel good, but I also want them to feel __________ by the experience,” laughs Claire.

4 . I was cleaning out a cupboard the other day when I made an amazing discovery. Inside I _________ the manuscript (手稿) for a novel. It included an outline of the _________ and a pile of typed pages telling a story. It was written, to my _________, by my father who has been dead for more than 50 years. It isn’t _________, as novels go, perhaps fifty or sixty typed pages, but without my _________ it has somehow accompanied me through my years of _________, several jobs, a marriage, the birth of my children and grandchildren, retirement and even a relocation across the country where I live.

I’m in the middle of reading another book _________ my dad’s novel has a place on my bed-side table. I want to have some __________ time for it so I haven’t __________ examined it yet. I find it fascinating to think that this could happen; that after more than fifty years my father could __________ his only son through the mists of time. It’s one of those things that we don’t see coming and that make life so __________.

6 . This morning, a former student sent me a message, telling me he is living a happy life. He said he often thinks of me and that he especially misses my _________ classes.

My thoughts went back to that shy, overweight boy who _________ to our school in his fifth grade. He was quiet and _________. Some of the boys teased him about his lack of _________ ability. When they played games, Gibby would often be left standing alone. Several times I went to the playground and asked to _________ a team. 8 . As a child I found comfort and joy in being creative, so I knew fairly early on in life that I wanted to do something art-related. Later, I knew about a ______ who was trained at City & Guilds Art School. I was in total awe of her talent and it really encouraged me to see her breathtakingly ______ pieces of art. With that, I visited C & G and ______ a woodcarving course.

Because I only started carving, I didn’ t ______ lots of pieces. One of my favourites was my seahorse in oak (橡树) it was my second ______ project. It was my first experience with oak and I ______ how hard the wood might be. I knew that it was going to really ______ me. It took me a good week to ______ it but I gave up halfway. When I looked at my unfinished piece, I started to feel ______ with it as it just looked so ugly.

As my ______ came to an end for the Christmas break, I took it home and I probably wouldn’t even ______ it. Because of Covid I ended up spending Christmas in my own flat, so I decided to take out the seahorse and ______ to work on it.

9 . The military dad, Fred Grooms Jr, was fortunate enough to be present in all of his son’s important events except for this year. Thankfully, he was given a ________ to go home earlier than scheduled.

Today, it was one of the most ________ football games for Fred Grooms III and his team. He was standing side by side with his teammates as they shook hands with their ________. 10 . At 111, Dr Edith Kaufmann was the second oldest person in the UK. I met her when I ________ at a care home for the elderly in London six years ago. I didn’t realize it would be the start of a close ________, where the age gap spanned eight decade.

At first sight, I was ________ by her self-confidence. Her doctorate (博士学位) told me she was intelligent and ________. From the beginning, I never felt as if Edith and I ________ conversation.
