2 . If you struggle to meet new people or join in a conversation at social events, it might be that your body language is sending the message to others to stay away.     1    ? Below are some tips to get you started.

Smile. Although it is possible to overdo smiling, generally it is better to smile than frown (皱眉). Try to find things that really make you happy or laugh and your smile will come across as natural rather than forced.

2    . Make sure that you aren’t using objects to shield (遮住) yourself from others. At a party, hold your drink at your side instead of close to your chest (胸膛). Keeping objects between you and others makes you appear guarded and closed.

Use eye contact. When you do end up talking with someone, be sure to maintain eye contact. Avoiding eye contact makes you appear untrustworthy or disinterested. If direct eye contact feels hard, try looking at only one eye at a time, or at a part between a person’s eyes.     3

Avoid nervous habits. Even though you might be nervous, avoid the habits that go with it.     4    . Don’t play with your pen or the change in your pocket. Keep your hands relaxed at your sides or use them to gesture (做手势) when making conversation.

5    . Say nice things about other people instead of mean things. Approach others and include those who seem to be left out. Be a positive person and you will attract other positive people to you.

Although it may feel unnatural at first, with time you should start to feel more open and confident as a result of changing your body language.

C.They won’t be able to tell the difference
D.Apart from body language, always be positive

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要探讨好奇心如何影响人们对信息的记忆、学习和创造力,并强调充分利用好奇心对于丰富生活的重要性。

3 . What does the term “dinosaur” actually mean? What Beatles’ song stayed in the US singles chart for the longest? Who was the president of the United States when Uncle Sam first got his beard?

These are not just questions from a particularly difficult public test.     1     After asking a group of twenty-four volunteers these questions, they asked each of them to rate how much they cared about the answers to each question, from “low-curiosity” to “high-curiosity”. And then they let the questions stay in the minds of the participants (参与者) for a while. The answers, by the way, are “terrible lizard”, Hey Jude’ and Abraham Lincoln.)

2     For one thing, the researches assumed that when people were curious about something, they remembered the details better. They were right. The study showed that people were 20 percent more likely to recall an interesting fact.

But what was perhaps more surprising was what was going on in people’s brains at the point that they recalled these facts.     3     They seemed to receive a hit of dopamine (多巴胺). Dopamine is one of our feel-good hormones and activates the part of the brain responsible for learning and forming memories. So, for the study participants, appealing to their curiosity made them feel good.     4

Making full use of your curiosity is an important method for building adventure into your life.     5     It also allows us to focus longer. After thorough researching the biographies of some of history’s most pioneering minds, from Leonardo da Vinci to Steve Jobs, the writer Walter Isscson summarized his findings thus: ‘Being curious about everything not only makes you more creative. 文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,主要讲的是如何从你读过的每本书中获得最大的收获。

4 . HOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF EVERY BOOK YOU READ

Reading books can be one of life’s greatest pleasures and learning experiences.     1    . Especially if you’re reading a book for more than just the pleasure of it, you have to do more than just turn over its pages. Here we will explore actionable ways to maximize the benefits of reading.

Set clear goals before reading

Understanding why you’re reading a book can significantly impact how you approach it. The right goal will help you pay attention to what’s most important. If you’re reading a book about photography, you may want to pay particular attention to the images.     2    .

Make summaries for every chapter

After finishing a chapter, take a few minutes to summarize it in your own words.     3    . It also creates a handy reference guide for the future. Summarizing can be a creative process, too. Try using bullet points, mind maps, or one-liners to capture the essence of each chapter.

Apply what you’ve learned

4    . If a book teaches you a new approach to time management, try implementing it in your daily routine. If a novel provides a moral lesson, reflect on how it applies to your life. This active application ensures that the book leaves a lasting impact.

    5

The process of reading doesn’t end when you turn the last page. Regularly revisiting your notes, summaries, and reflections keeps the material fresh and relevant. Consider setting aside time each month to review previous reads and reflect how they’ve shaped your thoughts and actions. Not for every book, of course, just for the most impactful ones.

A.Repeat reading for deeper insights
B.Review and reflect
C.You may notice details, themes, or ideas that were hidden during your first reading
D.This exercise deepens your understanding and helps identify the central themes and ideas
E.So spend some time reflecting on what you hope to achieve and let that guide your reading process
F.However, many of us struggle to remember and apply what we’ve read
G.Taking action on what you’ve read transforms theoretical knowledge into practical wisdom

文章大意:本文是说明文。文章主要通过引用社会心理学家Vanessa Bohns的研究和观点,来阐述赞美的重要性和如何有效地给予赞美。

7 . Why is a compliment so impactful? One of the most important things to humans is to feel valued and respected by others, says Vanessa Bohns, a social psychologist, who has researched compliments. According to her research, people feel “significantly better” after both giving and receiving a compliment.     1

“You handled that situation so well.”

Bohns recently used her favorite compliment when she saw a server address a difficult situation with a customer at the bar. “I like it so much because you use it in anxious moments where the other person is often unsure of whether they handled a situation OK,” she says. In situations that call for a compliment, don’t second-guess yourself. Give your compliments generously.     2     That concern is unfounded.

    3

This compliment — one of Bohns’ favorites — works well among romantic partners and close family members. “It’s a beautiful way to highlight how their presence turns life into something meaningful, despite boring routines of our everyday lives,” she says. If you’re afraid that giving a compliment like this will feel strange, you’re not alone.     4     If it makes you personally feel like the bar is lowered for you to give a compliment if you write it down, or if you practice saying it out loud or giving your pet cat the compliment first, do that.

“Hey, great dress!”

Feel free to compliment strangers. In Bohns’ research, students on a college campus were told to approach a stranger of the same gender and compliment them-about, for example, their nice shirt. Before heading out, the study participants tended to underestimate their positive effect while overestimating how annoying it would be. Across all contexts, strangers are more likely to be pleased than confused. Plus, who knows?     5

A.I love the way you bring out the best in people.
B.Respect is essential when you deliver compliments.
C.One way to overcome this fear is to do a practice run.
D.You make even ordinary moments feel extraordinary.
E.You might make a new friend in addition to making someone’s day.
F.With that in mind, we asked her to share some of her favorite compliments.
G.People sometimes worry that they’re going over and will start to sound insincere.

8 . Do you feel stuck in life and wish you weren’t so terrified of making mistakes? Do you often worry about making the wrong choices and end up not doing anything at all?     1    . Here are 4 reasons you need to stop being afraid of making mistakes:

Perfectionism doesn’t exist

Trying something different or somewhat risky will not ruin your life. You cannot expect everything to be perfect.     2    . Stop worrying about what could go wrong and just go with the flow. Learn to adapt to different situations and try to be more flexible.

Everyone makes mistakes

You might hear this all the time and it really is true. Making mistakes doesn’t mean you are weak or incompetent. It does not mean you’re a failure. On the contrary, it means you are brave enough to go after what you want. Most successful people leave a trail of mistakes before finally reaching their goals.     3    .

    4

If you keep playing it safe, you will never grow. New challenges will broaden your horizons and open up a whole new world for you. You will discover new skills, meet more like-minded people, and eventually feel more confident. Figure out what you really want, then take it one step at a time. Go at your own pace and don’t worry about what people think. What matters is that you are trying something.

Being bold will get you further

You don’t need to be an outgoing or over-confident person to make bold choices.     5    . Acknowledge that there’s nothing you can’t learn in the process. Get inspiration from people who are already doing what you have always wanted to do in life.

A.Be calm to face mistakes
B.Mistakes can help you grow
C.Just believe in yourself and your own capabilities
D.The key is to keep going no matter what life throws at you
E.That’s not how the world works because nothing is perfect
F.Making mistakes is the ladder of your growth and progress
G.If you want to make the most of your life, you can’t hide behind your fear forever

9 . It was dinner time, yet I hadn’t finished my work for the day. Cheery people who were enjoying their holiday time buzzed around me. But with my head down and headphones in, I had interacted with very few of them. The day passed more like a fast-forwarded video than something that I actually fully experienced.     1

This was my first week living the digital nomad lifestyle. I had left my corporate role and found freelance (自由职业的) writing work online to afford me the freedom to travel.     2     With enthusiasm, I expected my attitude would also change. Instead, the first surprising realization of my travel journey had hit: despite changing my formal suits to casuals, I was the exact same person I had been at home.

I had prepared excitedly, surfing online about digital nomadism.     3    While you might expect finances to be the biggest killer of this lifestyle, unrealistic expectations are the death blow that I hear about most often. After six years abroad, realism is now the primary message I share.

4     Instead of an office room, you’ll work from a balcony overlooking the Mediterranean or a sunny rooftop in the heart of Marrakesh. Instead of waiting at the coffee machine next to complaining colleagues, your daily coffee run will lead you down dusty cobblestone streets into tiny cafes. These dreams exist and are waiting for you once you clear customs.

But that’s not all that’s waiting for new digital nomads.     5     At-home life and life on the road can at times feel shockingly similar, or, if bad work habits take over, even worse. It’s an important expectation to understand before you set out on your digital nomad lifestyle: your surroundings will change, but you take you everywhere that you go. No matter how ultra-light you pack.

A.And my surroundings looked different.
B.But this wasn’t at a tiring nine-to-five office job.
C.This was a typical day back in my office I managed to escape.
D.New surroundings may also make you fully engaged in your work.
E.Should you choose to become a digital nomad, your environment will change.
F.You’ll still wake up with emails in your inbox and to-dos begging to be handled.
G.Yet somehow I unknowingly over-consumed expectation and under-consumed realism.

10 . For many students, shift workers and others, getting enough sleep each night presents a dilemma. There is too much to do and not enough time to do it, so people often try to catch up on the weekends.     1     And, while we spend our weekdays working around the clock, it takes a heavy burden on our bodies.

How many hours of sleep are really necessary?     2     Teens need eight to 10, and adults need seven to nine hours nightly.

3     Suppose you require eight hours of sleep a night, but for one week, you only slept six hours nightly. As a result, you developed a cumulative sleep debt of 14 hours.

As sleep debt accumulates, it impacts us in many ways including memory loss, immune function and stroke.     4     Though afternoon naps and extra weekend sleep can help relieve some tiredness, the healthiest course of action is to get a good night’s sleep every night.

There are many ways to create a healthy sleep routine. Maintain a restful environment in the bedroom by keeping it quiet, dark and cool.     5     That will make you feel physically comfortable in the first place. If you don’t fall asleep within 20 minutes, then try listening to relaxing music. Finally, think of enough sleep as preventive medicine and make it a priority.

A.It’s not hard to calculate your sleep debt.
B.Keep anything that might disturb you outside the bedroom.
C.Many prefer a temperature of around 18 degrees Celsius for sleep.
D.With a healthy sleep routine, you can get sufficient rest and protect your health.
E.It has also been known to contribute to heart disease, obesity, diabetes and more.
F.According to the Mayo Clinic, school-age children require nine to 12 hours a night.
G.But researchers report that it takes longer than we think to replace missing hours of sleep.
