1 . Do you want to celebrate your birthday in space? It would be very different from what you might do on earth. For example, your birthday cake would be flying. The candles could not be lit because astronauts cannot start a fire in the spaceship.
Some astronauts feel sick for the first few days in space. Some feel as if they have a cold all the time. That’s because without gravity (引力), the fluids (液体) in their bodies move towards their heads. Their faces look a little fatter.
And because gravity is not pressing on the spine (脊椎). The spine relaxes and stretches (舒展).
Since nothing has weight, astronauts can lift heavy objects easily.
A.For the same reason, their waists get smaller and their chests get bigger. |
B.They can even lift (举起,抬起) each other. |
C.These are items to keep them from floating around. |

2 . Realizing your dreams is not a matter of possibility. It’s a matter of motivating (激发) yourself to focus on the right things.
Sit down and get a move on! Reading more about motivation won’t help. Reviewing your to-do lists won’t help.
Think about the progress you have made and how far you have come. Open your eyes and give yourself credit (认可) for all that you have done.
Regard failure as a positive learning experience and judge unsuccessful work and mistakes as part of the growth process. When times get tough, take a deep breath, and know that most great things come when you least expect it.
A.You know you should do something. |
B.Only doing helps get everything going. |
C.Being defeated is a temporary (临时的) condition. |
D.Do you want to do something meaningful? |
E.Be aware (明白) of your self-talk and stay confident. |
F.Use self-belief to help you realize your dreams. |
G.Consider using a diary to keep track of your past success. |
3 . You are enjoying a nice dream until your alarm suddenly rings.
As the days get shorter, our mornings lose that crucial light to wake us up, so waking up gets harder. That means you’ll need to put in extra effort to get to work on time.
Avoid strong light near bedtime. So if you like reading before you close your eyes, try an actual book or an E-ink screen like a Kindle, which doesn’t emit the harsh light that phones and tablets do.
Buy a wake-up light. If you still have trouble with dark mornings, it might be time to introduce more light into your room.
Give yourself something to look forward to.
A.Stick to a regular schedule. |
B.We have a few tips that might help. |

F.Waking up is easier when you have a good reason to be conscious. |
G.Philips makes some popular lamps that produce natural light during gray winter days. |
4 . How to deal with your homework
Write it down.
Create a homework station. Find somewhere comfortable and quiet to do your homework.
Do homework as early as possible. Don’t leave homework to the last minute.
Treat yourself. You can easily get tired by sitting through an hour or two of homework without stopping. Once you finish homework for a subject, take a small break (no more than 15 minutes). Either taking a walk or finding something to eat will do. But do not turn on the TV, or you’ll never go back to your study.
A.Use your time wisely. |
B.Start as soon as you get home. |
C.Start with your hardest homework. |
D.Do not burn the midnight oil, either. |
E.Never do your homework in front of the TV. |
F.After short breaks, return to finish the rest of your homework. |
G.Keep a homework notebook where you record all your homework. |
5 . In the long history of about 5,000 years, numerous Chinese traditional festivals were celebrated in honour of gods or some significant days, some of which are passed down from generation to generation and people always practice special traditional activities in each festival.
The Qingming Festival
The Qingming Festival is on the 15th day after the Spring Equinox (春分), around April 4 or April 5 every year.
The Double Ninth Festival
The Winter Solstice (冬至)
The winter solstice is on around December 22 or 23 of the solar calendar each year. From that day on, the daytime will be longer and longer.
In China, this festival is in late January or early February, the last day of the lunar year. People celebrate it by having a family reunion dinner, setting off fireworks and staying up late. Breaking the dishes and bowls is a thing all the people are afraid of, but if you did it, you should say “Sui sui ping an!”

G.It is a double-meaning word, meaning you will be safe during the new year |
6 . People spend about a third of their lives sleeping. That might sound like time is wasted but it’s not. Even in a deep sleep period, the brain is busy. It’s hard at work sorting memories getting rid of harmful wastes and more. This time of rest also helps the body build stronger bones. Well-rested people tend to be happier during the day.
Experts recommend that teens get about nine hours of sleep each night. But surveys show that teens are getting less and less sleep. Only about one-third of 18-year-olds now report getting at least seven hours of sleep per night.
Research suggests that people who use screens in bed have a harder time falling asleep. Surely new screen technology could lessen that effect.
A.And that is a problem. |
B.There are many reasons for their choice. |
C.Plus they tend to deal with stress better. |
D.But experts suggest putting away electronics at least 30 minutes before bed. |
E.However, the majority of them are still full of energy. |
F.It’s hard to say exactly why teens have become more sleep-deprived. |
G.But losing sleep to screens isn’t just a matter of choosing to stay up late. |
7 . How to Help Your Child Overcome Their Fear of Water
Your kids love bath time and seem excited about your family’s upcoming trip to the beach. But when you get to the beach, they scream, and won’t even dip their toes into the water.
Talk It Out
It can be helpful to understand the reason behind your child’s fear. Some kids may be affected by a scary movie where they saw a monster living in the bottom of a lake or a pool.
Fun Equipment
Some kids will feel more comfortable when going in with some equipment. For example, colorful goggles (护目镜), water wings with their favorite cartoon images on them, a life-jacket.
However, parents should never allow floating aids devices to give your children a false sense of security or use them as substitutes for hands-on supervision (监督).

8 . How similar are language and music?
Language is part of our daily lives, no matter where we live in the world.
Both language and music have a writing system.
In English we record language using the alphabet, which is a collection of letters. Similarly, we use notes (音符) to keep a record of music. Musicians read notes and create meaning in the form of music.
You can make a good guess at where someone is from by listening to the language he uses. In the same way, we know that styles of music are different around the world, giving us the opportunity to explore many different cultures through their music and providing us with music for every situation.
Both share emotion.
A.Both are expressive. |
B.Both vary with culture. |
C.How do you know that I am angry? |

9 . Improving your communication skills
Developing better communication habits requires several important skills that work together with each other. Some of these skills involve the way you speak or hold your body, and others are more emotionally based on interpersonal(人际关系的) skills.
●Listening skills.
Clear communication starts with active listening. If you’re just focusing on how to express yourself, perhaps you are not listening or reacting to what others are bringing to the table.
●Empathy(共鸣) .
●
Mastering nonverbal(非语言的) cues and signals can help prevent miscommunication and make those around you interested in signals. Pay attention to your facial expressions and body language when you are speaking with someone in a professional setting. Your nonverbal cues affect the first impression you make on someone. Maintaining eye contact, limiting hand gestures, and having good posture go a long way when meeting someone for the first time.
●Teamwork.
The ability to actively engage in team-building is vital to communication skills.
A.Appropriate facial expressions. |
B.Nonverbal communication skills. |

G.Being able to understand the feelings of those around you is essential to effective communicators. |
10 . How to Teach Your Kids to Enjoy Hiking
Hiking is one of my family’s favorite things to do. Ever since my kids were babies, we’ve been getting out of the house on most weekends to explore and get exercise and fresh air.
A good, long family hike gives us a sense of accomplishment.
But how do we do it?
I’ve put together a list of the things that work. Not every family’s list will look the same, but for anyone starting out hiking with kids, I recommend you to keep these suggestions in mind.
Eat before you leave and carry food. It’s common for us to have a quick bite before we strike out on a trail. I always pack snacks (零食) like nuts, fruit, chocolate, and cookies.
Pack lots of water. There is nothing more miserable (痛苦的) than hiking while thirsty. I let my kids drink as much as they want because they can always stop to relieve themselves along the way.
Show kids a route map.
A.I’d like to say it is not an easy question. |
B.Remember, it’s not about the speed. |
C.It creates opportunities for conversation. |
D.Give them encouragement along the way. |
E.Kids like knowing where they are on the earth. |
F.I often get this question from friends and strangers. |
G.But these are served at official stops, not just handed out freely. |
