文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了几幅经典名画,来探讨这些作品的艺术特点、历史背景及其对后世的影响。

1 . Painting is an ancient medium and even with the introduction of photography, film and digital technology, it still has remained a persistent mode of expression. So many paintings have come into being over the years but only a small percentage of them could be described as “timeless classics”. The following are some of the most famous paintings of all time.

Leonardo Da Vinci, Mona Lisa, 1503 — 1519

Painted between 1503 and 1519,Leonardo da Vinci’s attractive portrait has been a subject of controversy since the day it was made, due to two questions: Who’s the subject and why is she smiling? A number of theories for the former have been provided over the years: That she’s the wife of the Florentine merchant Francesco di Bartolomeo del Giocondo and that she’s Leonardo’s mother, Caterina. As for that famous smile, its quality has driven people crazy for hundreds of years.

James Abbott McNeill Whistler, Arrangement in Grey and Black No.1, 1871

Whistler’s Mother, or Arrangement in Grey and Black No.1,as it’s actually titled, speaks to the artist’s ambition to pursue art for art’s sake. James Abbott McNeill Whistler painted the work in his London studio in 1871. Whistler’s mother Anna is pictured as one of several elements locked into an arrangement of right angles. Her severe expression fits in with the rigidity of the composition, and it’s somewhat ironic to note that despite Whistler’s formalist intentions, the painting became a symbol of motherhood.

Jan van Eyck, The Arnolfini Portrait,1434

As one of the most significant works produced during the Northern Renaissance, this composition is believed to be one of the first paintings finished in oils. It portrays an Italian merchant and a woman who may or may not be his bride. In 1934.the celebrated art historian Erwin Panofsky proposed that the painting is actually a wedding contract. What can be reliably said is that the piece used orthogonal perspective to create a sense of space. It feels like a painting you could step into.

1. What aspect of the Mona Lisa has attracted people for centuries?
A.The research methods.B.The mysterious smile.
C.The attractive clothing.D.The matching of colors.
2. Why did Whistler paint her mother?
A.To show love for his mother.B.To be a symbol of motherhood.
C.To express his artistic intention.D.To decorate his studio in London.
3. Who used orthogonal perspective to create a sense of space?
A.Leonardo da Vinci.B.James Abbott McNeill Whistler.
C.Jan van Eyck.D.Erwin Panofsky.

文章大意:本文属于说明文,旨在解释和澄清关于智能手机辐射是否对健康造成影响的公众关注点,通过引用专家意见和现有科学研究结果,向读者传递科学信息,消除对于手机辐射的误解。

2 . Spending a day glued to your smartphone probably isn’t doing you any favors. Too much phone use has been linked with a range of concerns, including sleep issues, joint pain and even relationship problems. But if it’s radiation you’re worried about, experts say you don’t have to ditch your phone.

“There’s no risk of anything hazardous or dangerous with radiation from cellphones,” said Gayle Woloschak, an associate dean and professor of radiology at the Northwesterm Univerity Feinberg School of Medicine. As with all cellphones, along with Wi-Fi networks, radio stations, remote controls and GPS, smartphones do send out radiation, said Emily Caffrey, an assistant professor of health physics at the University of Alabama at Birningham. They use invisible energy waves to transmit voices, texts, photos and emails to nearby cell towers, which can carry them to almost anywhere in the world. But nearly three decades of scientific research has not linked such exposures to medical issues like cancer, health authorities including the Food and Drug Administration say. Here’s what we know.

“Radiation” describes many types of energy, some of which do carry risks, explained Dr. Howard Fine, director of the Brain Tumor Center at New York — Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York City, “It is often sent out from radioactive substances”, Atomic bombs, or, to a far lesser degree, X-ray machines, send out energy called ionizing radiation that in high enough or frequent enough amount can damage DNA and cause cancer, Dr. Fine said.

But smartphone energy falls into a category called non-ionizing radiation, Dr. Caffrey said, which isn’t powerful enough to cause this damage. “A lot of people think radiation is radiation, but it’s not all the same,” Dr. Woloschak said. “There’s no DNA damage seen from cellphone use.”

Most experts and health authorities like the F.D.A. and World Health Organization agree that there’s no evidence that smartphone radiation causes health problems. Still, several studies over the years have made headlines for suggesting their links to brain diseases. Many of these studies have since been proved to be false, Dr. Fine said, including those focused on fifth-generation.

1. What does the underlined word “ditch” in Paragraph 1 mean?

2. Which statement best reflects the attitude of health authorities towards cellphone radiation?
A.They consider it secure based on current research.
B.They are indifferent due to lack of sufficient data.
C.They express concern and require strict regulations.
D.They are doubtful and appeal for immediate action.
3. What does this text mainly tell us?
A.Forming a healthy lifestyle is vital.
B.Smartphones need radiation limits.
C.Radiation concerns are unfounded.
D.Technology reduces radiation risks.
4. Where would this text most likely appear?
A.In a science magazine.
B.In a collection of short stories.
C.In a school newsletter.

3 . Bill Sumiel was having a tough Friday. It was October 2020,and the 71-year-old,who was dealing with kidney (肾) failure and had been on dialysis (透 析) for a few years, found himself away from home.

He’d been diagnosed with diabetes (糖 尿 病) over 20 years before, which led to his kidney problems. He was on the transplant list, but no matches had yet appeared. So he continued with his treatments periodically. Without a ride lined up for Friday’s do-over, Sumiel took Ubers to and from his appointment.

Timothy Letts,31,was driving to visit a friend when his phone received the request for Sumiel’s ride home. When Sumiel got into his car, Letts could see that the older man was unenergetic but in good spirits. And as they set out to Sumiel’s home, the pair got to chatting. During conversation, Sumiel revealed that he was searching for a kidney donor. Letts joked that he’d be a good donor candidate, given that he didn’t drink or smoke.

Sumiel agreed, though he didn’t think much of it. Letts, however, couldn’t stop thinking about it and it was always on his mind. So, Letts said: “I’d like to see if I could be a match to give you a kidney.”

“I was shocked,” Sumiel recalls. He was shaking so hard that he could barely write his name when they exchanged contact information

After the initial excitement, Sumiel started feeling less optimistic. He was touched by Letts’s offer, but he wondered if it had just been an emotional moment. Would he hear from him? And what was the likelihood of a match?

But Letts was true to his word. He got in touch with Sumiel just a few hours later, and by the next week, Letts had contacted the kidney transplant program. After a series of testing, the results were in: Letts was an ideal donor, and he and Sumiel were a perfect match.

In December 2021,14 months after their chance encounter, Sumiel and Letts had their surgeries. It was a success. Today they live respectively and healthily and anticipate the day they can reunite.

1. What can be inferred from the first four paragraphs?
A.Sumiel’s problem was caused by his wrong treatments.
B.Sumiel must take Ubers to receive treatment periodically.
C.Letts took the matter of donating his kidney seriously.
D.Letts’s energetic friend requested him to donate his kidney.
2. Why did Sumiel start feeling less optimistic after excitement?
A.He questioned the sincerity of Letts’ offer.
B.He worried about the risks of the surgery.
C.He believed Letts would forget his offer.
D.He doubted if Letts was fit for donation.
3. What kind of person is Letts based on this text?
A.Sympathetic and wise.B.Reliable and helpful.
C.Responsible and Sensitive.D.Trustworthy and humble.
4. What is the best title for the text?
A.A Fortunate Driver.B.A Kidney Transplant.
C.A Successful Surgery.D.A Ride for a Lifetime.

5 . Researchers believe they have found evidence for a hidden ocean on Mimas, one of Saturn’s major moons. This makes Mimas a target for learning more about the origins of life in our solar system.

Saturn has 146 moons orbiting it. The biggest is larger than the planet Mercury; the smallest is roughly the size of a sports field on the Earth. Mimas, which was first discovered in 1789, is one of the major moons and is about 250 miles wide.

Experts used to think Mimas was mostly made out of solid ice and rock. In 2014, astronomers noticed its orbit around Saturn was moving unsteadily. A shaky orbit can be caused either by a core shaped like a rugby ball or a huge liquid ocean beneath the surface. At first, lots of astronomers argued against the suggestion that Mimas had an ocean because there is no sign of it on the surface.

To investigate more thoroughly, researchers looked at images taken by Cassini, a NASA spacecraft sent to study Satun. The images showed that the moon’s orbit around Saturn drifted by about six miles over 13 years. The team’s calculations found that the only way Mimas could move in this way is if it had a hidden ocean under the surface. They think the ocean formed when the moon’s core warmed up and melted some of the ice.

Mimas is just one of many moons that scientists think could have oceans below the surface Ganymede, which orbits Jupiter and is the largest moon in the solar system, has more water in its ocean than all of the oceans on the Earth. Titan, another of Saturn’s moons, is believed to have a salty ocean beneath the surface.

Space agencies want to study these oceans because they might be home to living organisms. However, the ocean on Mimas might not be old enough for life to have emerged there yet. It took hundreds of millions of years for life to develop on the Earth and the ocean on Mimas is relatively young; it is less than 25 million years old.

1. What is the exploration of Mimas aimed at in Paragraph 1?
A.Providing evidence for a hidden ocean.
B.Exploring the beginning of life in outer space.
C.Promoting research for space exploration.
D.Ensuring harmony between man and nature.
2. What is the main idea of paragragh2?
A.The discovery of Saturn’s moons.
B.The number and variety of moons orbiting Saturn.
C.The size and characteristics of Mimas.
D.The comparison between Satum and Mercury.
3. What did astronomers initially think of he existence of oceans on Mimas?
A.Confident.B.IndifferentC.OptimisticD.Doubtful
4. Why did the researchers use Casini’s images to investigate Mimas?
A.To analyze its orbit.B.To measure its size.
C.To observe its surfaceD.To find landing sites.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了Juhani Murros对艺术家Van Den生平与艺术作品的探索与研究。

6 . “By removing needless details in pursuit of perfection, Van Den followed in the footsteps of many great artists, writers, composers, and painters.”

Juhani Murros made an unexpected discovery during his visits to art galleries when he worked for an organization in Ho Chi Minh City in 1990. A small still life in an unnoticeable gallery commanded the Finnish physician’s attention. “It was not an eye-catching oil painting, yet its dark, mysterious colors and the emotional tension of its disciplined composition set it apart.” Thus began a long journey of discovering the art and life of Van Den, a Buddhist of mixed Chinese and Vietnamese ancestry who studied in Paris for less than two years during the first French Indochina War.

Murros’ biography is, by necessity, brief because there is limited knowledge of the artist, mostly in oral way by family and friends. Many of his paintings did not survive the damp Southeast Asian climate nor the political chaos of his lifetime. However, the author’s research appears to be extensive, as much a years-long spiritual examination of Van Den as a historical one. The artist’s love for country life is apparent in his work, and it is said by those who knew him that he preferred to paint countryside scenes close to his heart and worked as an outsider. He is uninterested in the more elegant work of academically recognized painters. Despite these limitations, Van Den won Vietnam’s most honorable art award in 1960.

Murros gives an in-depth look into the life of this obscure master. The book introduces the readers to Van Den’s art with photographs of his paintings, accompanied by short stories behind them. The book is as quiet as the artist’s work, but it is a satisfying read. Each stroke of words in the book connects to the readers; the narrative awakens the artistic spirit in each one of us, encouraging us to follow our heart.

1. What first impressed Juhani Murros?
A.Van Den’s life story.B.Van Den’s painting style.
C.Van Den’s birth place.D.Van Den’s emotional stale.
2. What can we learn about Van Den?
A.His works are rarely available today.B.He showed great love for his country.
C.His works were of mysterious themes.D.He ever travelled in China and Vietnam.
3. What does the underlined word “obscure” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A.Famous.B.Obvious.C.Little-known.D.Shallow.
4. In which column of a newspaper can we read the passage?
A.Geography.B.Science.C.Health.D.Art.

7 . A shadowy figure sits alone in a room, his face dimly lit by a computer screen. With a grin, he types in a series of computer commands, and in the blink of an eye, someone’s bank account is drained to zero.

In today’s digital age, cyberattacks like this happen thousands of times per day. Hackers can steal money, information, or completely take control of a machine from anywhere in the world. However, not all hackers are villains.

Some hackers, called white hat or ethical hackers, are individuals who make the most of their hacking skills to identify security vulnerabilities (漏洞) in hardware, software and networks. Their job is crucial in preventing cyberattacks and safeguarding sensitive information. The term “white hat” originated from old cowboy movies, where heroes wore white hats and villains wore black ones. Like the heroes in cowboy movies, white hats seek to stop the bad guys and save the day.

White hat hackers only seek vulnerabilities legally, often working on open-source software or with authorized access to systems. Once these weak spots are identified, companies or individuals can take steps to prevent serious breaches and losses. White hat hackers use a variety of different techniques to keep the internet safe. Penetration testing, for example, allows them to mimic cyberattacks and uncover system weaknesses. Security scanning tools allow white hats to identify holes in a network’s security systems. Simulating denial-of-service attacks (DoS attacks) helps companies prepare for attacks against their websites.

Many of the world’s top white hat hackers began their journeys on the wrong side of the law. A prime example is Kevin Mitnick. This notorious hacker once held the title of “most wanted hacker” in the U. S. due to his cybercriminal activities in 1995. However, after being arrested and spending five years in jail, his life took a remarkable turn. Mitnick decided to use his hacking skills for ethical purposes, eventually establishing his own cybersecurity consulting company.

If you aspire to be a white hat hacker, start by building a strong foundation in computer and network fundamentals. Good luck, computer cowboy!

1. What does the underlined word “villains” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.evil-doers.B.heroes.C.attackers.D.victims.

3. People skilled in computer and network can’t be top white hat hackers unless ______.
A.they obey the law
B.they identify security weak points
C.they take measures to stop serious losses
D.they build their own cybersecurity consulting companies
4. What is the purpose of the text?
A.To teach us how to stay secure online.

9 . If a pancake could dream, it might long for legs so it could jump off your breakfast plate in pursuit of a better, unchewed life. But legs aren’t necessary for something as flat as a pancake to jump around. A group of scientists have designed a pancake-shaped robot that can jump several times per second and higher than seven times its body height. The new robot named Hop, which swiftly jumps without feet, is an important contribution to the soft robotics.

Many ground robots move by rolling or walking. But it’s more efficient for robots to jump over obstacles (障碍物) than to go around them. Although jumping can offer some robots a competitive edge, engineering that ability has been a challenge for robotics researchers. Some soft robots that store energy can perform a single impressive jump very infrequently. Some lightweight soft robots that don’t store energy can jump frequently but can’t jump high or far enough to successfully cross an obstacle.

For inspiration, the researchers looked to gall midge larvae (瘿蚊幼虫) that miraculously throw themselves across distances 30 times as long as their loglike bodies. A gall midge larva bends its body and squeezes the liquid in its body to one end, making it rigid (僵硬的). The accumulation of liquid builds up pressure, and releasing the pressure sends it soaring (飙升). The robot’s body doesn’t resemble (像) that of a gall midge larva, but it jumps like one. Its body is made of two small plastic bags printed with electrodes; the front bag is filled with liquid and the back one is filled with the same volume of air. The robot uses electricity to drive the flow of liquid, which causes the body to bend and generate force with the ground, resulting in a jump. And the air bag imitates the function of an animal’s tail, helping the robot keep a stable position.

While the robot is currently restricted to Earth, it might be right at home exploring another planet. If this is true, the researchers robot might jump over dusty rocks and large holes on the moon or Mars, going where no pancake has gone before.

1. What does the author want to show by mentioning a pancake?
A.A pancake’s dream to have legs is unrealistic.
B.A robot is capable of serving a good pancake.
C.A pancake-shaped robot can jump without legs.
D.Research on pancakes advances our understanding of robots.
2. What difficultly do robotics researchers have in developing Hop according to Paragraph 2?
A.Hop’s avoiding an obstacle.B.Hop’s moving around by rolling.
C.Hop’s performing one remarkable jump.D.Hop’s jumping high and far continuously.
3. What inspiration do the researchers draw from gall midge larvae?
A.They are shaped like logs.
B.They have tails to change positions.
C.They bend their bodies and increase force.
D.They are filled with liquid and have rigid bodies.
4. What is the author’s attitude to the future of the new robot?
A.Intolerant.B.Positive.C.Indifferent.D.Ambiguous.

文章大意:本文是篇说明文。文章主要介绍了由英国野生动物慈善机构Wildwood Trust宣布的,欧洲野猫在灭绝200年后,可能被重新引进英国的计划。

10 . European wildcats could be reintroduced to England more than 200 years after they became extinct in the country. The project has been announced by UK wildlife charity Wildwood Trust.

European wildcats are one of the UK’s rarest mammals. The only wild population, numbering fewer than 300 individuals, lives in the Scottish Highlands but they are on the verge of extinction, partly because they have bred with local feral cats (wild-living domestic cats).

Supporters hope to save the species in the UK by reintroducing them to England and Wales, where they died out around 200 years ago because of hunting and loss of habitat. To bring back the species, Wildwood Trust is planning to build 10 new breeding facilities on two sites in Kent and Devon. Kittens bred in captivity but away from humans will then be released into the wild. The University of Exeter is researching places where the animals could be reintroduced.

European wildcats are around the same size as a large domestic cat, but at up to eight kilograms they are slightly adult heavier. They have a tabby-like pattern with thick black stripes on their bodies and a bushy tail and like to live in forests but near open grassland. They’re also famously shy and keep their distance from humans. Laura Gardner, director of conservation at Wildwood Trust, told The Times newspaper that people should not be worried by the thought of wildcats returning to the wild. “We’re not talking about wolves,” she said.

Wildwood Trust says that its project can benefit both the wildcats and the habitats where they live. They are one of the few native predators left in the UK, so a healthy population of wildcats could help to control the numbers of animals they prey on, such as rabbits and rodents. By competing for the same food as foxes, they will also help to reduce fox numbers and restore a balance to nature.

1. What is the aim of the project?
A.To save wildcats from dying out.B.To ensure wildcats’good habitats.
C.To raise money to protect wildcats.D.To build some new breeding facilities.
2. What does the author indicate by mentioning Laura Gardner in paragraph 4?
A.Wildcats are very shy animals.B.Wildcats are not as fierce as wolves.
C.European wildcats are unique animals.D.Wildcats cannot pose a threat for humans.
3. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Wildcats will threaten the number of other animals.
B.Wildcats and its habitats will be well protected.
C.Wildcats can contribute to ecological balance.
D.Wildcats are one of the few predators left in the UK.
4. What is the best title of the text?
A.Wildwood Trust Announcing a Plan.
B.Rare Wildcats Making a Comeback.
C.Reintroducing Wildcats Benefiting Us.
D.Wildcats Disappearing From the World.
