1 . It was a hot summer day a few years ago. I had just pulled into the local gas station. After pumping the gas I started to walk inside to pay. That was when I noticed them. Two elderly women were standing back from their car. There was a mixture of shock and fear on their faces. I looked and saw what they saw. Five yellow jackets had started to build a nest around their gas cap. My eyes widened. I shared the ladies’ fear.
Yellow jackets had never been friends of mine. Several times these wasps (黄蜂) had attacked me while I was gardening. They gave me multiple stings (蜇) each time I ran over their ground nests. They are the reason I never do gardening in shorts anymore. The worst time, however, happened when I was a young boy. A friend of mine and I were running and playing in my backyard. I must have stepped on one of their hidden nests again because before I knew it both of us were being chased and stung over and over by the yellow jackets while we ran away screaming. I ran to my mom with tears in my eyes. She immediately ran a cold bath and put us both in it to ease (缓解) the pain before giving us medicine.
Still, I knew I couldn’t let fear stop me now. I reached into my back pocket for a paper towel I had there, tore out the nest and stepped on it while the angry wasps buzzed around me. Both of the ladies thanked me and I said, “You’re welcome!” with a smile and a happy heart.

2 . Instagram is a hugely popular way for users to share pictures, videos and messages with family and friends. Most people use the service on their mobile phones.
Now, Instagram users are able to use the service for a completely different activity — reading books. The New York Public Library recently started a new service called Insta Novels. This new service will include a collection of classic books through Instagram. The service is available for all Instagram users, not just people in New York City.
Library officials have promised to provide readers with “some of the greatest stories ever told“. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland was the first on Instagram. The New York Public Library said this famous story was specially designed for Instagram to include colorful animations(动画)and modern drawings.
The books can be found in Instagram Stories. This Instagram feature(特色) was designed to let users post photos and videos that would disappear after 24 hours. But then Story Highlights was introduced last year as a way for users to keep content in Stories for as long as they want. Books posted by the library will be available through Story Highlights.
Library officials say the main purpose is to raise awareness about reading in general. But it is also designed to show how the library is changing to fit an online world and attract younger people.
Christopher Platt, the New York Public Library’s chief library officer, spoke about the service. “We want people to understand that libraries aren’t just places full of dusty books,” he said.
The library has already lined up several other classic works in the coming months. These include The Yellow Wallpaper, a short story by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, and The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka.

3 . Most Americans speak directly and are not afraid to say “no”. But we do have ways to be polite-or show respect for another’s feelings.
Any questions?
In the case of a teacher asking, “Do you have any questions?” You may want to answer this way, “ No, I do not have any, because your lesson was very clear.”
Another answer you may give is:
More coffee?
On a plane when a flight attendant (乘务员) asks, “Do you need coffee?” you may hear this answer: “Thanks, I’m fine.”
Note that the speaker does not use the word “no” but still sends the message that coffee is not wanted. Another answer would suggest something else the attendant can bring.
More difficult situations
I think that saying “no” may be more difficult in other situations, such as when a friend asks you for a favor.
Here is an example:
—Ryan, can I borrow your bicycle tomorrow?
—No, I’m sorry, but I need it to go to my job.
—Ryan, can you join us for dinner Saturday?
—I wish I could, but I have other plans.
Here, you express the idea that you want to accept the invitation but you do not need to give details (细节) of your plan.
A.In this case, Americans would usually explain why they cannot help. |
B.Let us look at some polite ways to say“no” |
C.You may worry what you say is annoying. |
D.Not now, but I might have some later. |
E.It is also difficult to say “no” to an invitation. |
F.No, thanks, but I would like some water. |
4 . When I speak English, I usually translate words from my native language in my head and it takes me a lot of time just to speak a simpler sentence.
Step :
Think small first. I mean think in words, only simple words. The learning of your mother tongue starts with simple words like “ dad” table” dog“blue and so on.
Step 2: Think in sentences
This step needs more time and effort. But it’s worth it.
Step 3:Think in conversations
When you are sure that you can express a complete thought, make conversations with others.
A.Think in words. |
B.Just try doing this in English. |
C.Does this sound familiar to you? |
D.Speak English as much as possible. |
E.Start with simple and short sentences. |
F.Make conversations with yourself first. |
5 . If you think of the jobs robots could never do, you would probably put doctors and teachers at the top of the list. But, in some cases, they already perform better than doctors at diagnosing(诊断)illness. Also some patients might feel more comfortable sharing personal information with a machine than a person. Could there be a place for robots in education after all?
British education expert, Anthony Seldon thinks so. And he even has a date for the robot takeover of the classroom: 2027. He believes robots will do the main job of transferring(传递)information and teachers will be like assistants. Intelligent robots will read students’ faces ,movements and maybe even brain signals. Then they will transfer the information to each student. It’s not a popular opinion and it’s unlikely robots will ever have empathy(共情) and the ability to really connect with humans like another human can.
One thing is certain, though. A robot teacher is better than no teacher at all. In some parts of the world, there aren’t enough teachers and 9-16 percent of children under the age of 14 don’t go to school. Teachers all over the world are leaving because it is a difficult and lower-paid job and they feel overworked. That problem could be part solved by robots.
Perhaps the question is not “ Will robots replace teachers?” but“How can robots help teachers?” Teachers waste a lot of time doing non-teaching work, including more than 11 hours a week marking homework. If robots could cut the time teachers spend marking homework and writing reports, teachers would have more time and energy for the parts of the job humans do best.

B.Giving an answer. |
C.Presenting an example.. |
D.Introducing the topic |

B.Robots will work as assistants |
C.Robots can only transfer information. |
D.Robots will have empathy like humans. |
A.Because robot teachers cost less. |
B.Because robot teachers teach better. |
C.Because there aren’t enough teachers. |
D.Because there are already robot doctors |
A.By answering emails. |
B.By marking homework. |
C.By reading students’ faces. |
D.By analyzing brain signals. |
A.Illness diagnosing |
B.Robot teachers |

6 . Sugar Goldtree was my Grandma. I loved her. Everyone called my grandma “Sugar”. Every time I heard it, I would smile a huge smile.Grandma Sugar had a small house with a large garden. She worked all year long preparing that garden. She would always tidy the garden carefully. She would till the soil until it was like fine sand.
Grandma Sugar would tell me that if we plant the corn in one place this year, then the next year we would need to plant it in another spot. She would always say,“Fill your garden with flowers, The bees will buzz (嗡嗡地飞) around your head when you are picking those nice little cucumbers (黄瓜). After all, they helped to make our plants so beautiful.”
“We are about ready to plant some sunflowers,” Grandma Sugar said, handing me a packet of seeds. I carefully placed the seeds in rows, and covered them with soil, stepping on top of the soil to pack it down. Grandma Sugar sat at the edge of the garden making signs to put at the end of each row, with a date on it. Each year we would keep those signs in a book with photos of me and Grandma Sugar in our garden.
Grandma Sugar had a whole basket of seeds to plant. One by one,we planted rows of corn, beans, cucumbers, onions, lettuce and tomatoes. In the middle of summer, I would run down to the garden with a basket. Grandma Sugar would yell (大赋),“Pick a salad from the bed, little sugar!”

8 . When I was a child, I often dreamed of the time when I could leave home and escape to the city. We lived on a farm and, in the winter especially, we were quite cut off from the outside world. As soon as I left school, I packed my bags and moved to the capital. However, I soon discovered that city life has its problems too.
One big disadvantage is money---it costs so much to go out, not to mention basics like food and housing. Another disadvantage is pollution. I suffer from asthma(哮喘), and at times the air is so bad that I am afraid to go outside. Then there is the problem of traveling round. Although I have a car, I seldom use it because of the traffic jams. One choice is to go by bicycle, but that can be quite dangerous.
Of course there are advantages. First, there is so much to do in the city, whatever your tastes in culture or entertainment. Besides, there are wonderful jobs and greater chances of moving to a more important job or position. Finally, if you like shopping, the variety of goods is very surprising --- and , what is more, shops are often only a short walk away.
Is life better then, in the city? Perhaps it is , when you are in your teens or twenties. However, as you get older, and especially if you have small children, the peace of the countryside may seem preferable. I certainly hope to move back there soon.

9 . The rising costs of health care have become a problem for many countries in the world. To deal with the problem, it is suggested that the government should spend more money on disease prevention. Actually, many kinds of diseases can be prevented in many ways and preventing a disease is usually much cheaper than treating.
One effective way of disease prevention is to eat more healthy food. For instance, keeping a balanced diet, such as not eating too much animal fat and regularly eating vegetables and fruits, seems to be quite important.
Another useful and costless way of prevention is to exercise often, which is necessary for a healthy mind and body. Regular exercise, such as running, walking, playing sports is a good way to make people feel better.
In addition, health education, included in disease prevention, plays a key role in improving people's health. By giving people more information about health, the government could help people understand the importance of disease prevention and ways to achieve it.
However, stressing disease prevention does not mean medical treatment is unimportant. After all, prevention and treatment are just two different means towards the same effect. In a word, we could save money on health care and treat patients more successfully if the government spends more money on disease prevention.
