In 1996, Ian was diagnosed with a brain tumor on his left side. As a result of the disease, his right-side hearing was lost. The talented player had to put a hold on his passion for a while. However, he knew he would come out stronger. In 1997, after going through two major surgeries, Ian recovered from the deadly illness.

But another disease completely turned his life over. In 2006, he suddenly had a stroke (中风) which was so critical that it ended with him being severely disabled to the extent that the doctors told him that he might not walk ever again, let alone playing Golf.

Upon realizing that he has lost the chance of playing the Senior Tour, he was heartbroken. But it wasn’t powerful enough to destroy the high-spirited individual. Ian took it as a challenge. He not only decided to start writing but also creating stroke awareness and promoting Golf for the disabled.

With the optimistic thinking of “A disability is not an inability,” Ian became a part of the British Inclusive Golf, which works to bring together the disabled and non-disabled players and create golf-related events.

Ian has donated a large number of his life earnings to The Stroke Association. While spending a huge deal of time creating vast funds for the organization, Ian has played a huge role in enlightening others on how his recovery was aided by Golf, promoting the affected ones to make sure of the effective sport.

Ian has authored the book “The Social Golfer,” published in 2008. The book has successfully raised a total of £ 20,000, which the former golf player has donated to The Stroke Foundation. Ian also wrote “Living the Dream,” published in 2012. The book was an extension of the journey of his recovery, intending to inspire the readers.

3 . “Mom, I got into the University of Delaware!” I still remember how thrilled I was to be the first one in my family to have the opportunity to study abroad. I was so excited that I did a countdown every single day leading up to move in day at the university. However, just a few weeks after I got there, I found it very difficult to adapt to a different country, culture, and a strict curriculum.

I knew studying in a foreign university was going to be hard, but the first exam still shocked — me I got a 58%, the lowest in my life. Worse still, since my day-to-day experiences and interests were so different from the American students’, I was struggling to make friends. I felt like a complete loser and kept thinking maybe I should just give up. But then it occurred to me that I was not studying just for myself, but to live up to my family’s expectations.

Having made up my mind to push myself forward, I came up with a plan to make improvements. The plan was not only about study, but also about my eating and leisure time. I also planned weekly goals on how to make friends, such as “you will talk to someone at the dining hall, and you will not be scared!” Looking back, I find it was definitely embarrassing to plan my days like this, but I did it and made it. I was able to interact with others without looking like an outsider and even made some friends. I even began to teach others about my country, Panama. I told them about typical cultural differences between Panama and the US. It was really exciting to see them eager to learn more about my country.

Now I am a senior, confident, strong and smart. My freshman-year self is extremely proud of how far I have come. The coming graduation surely makes me sad, but I’m sure it’s not the ending, but the beginning of the many more goals I will accomplish.

文章大意:本文是一篇议论文。本文介绍了技术是一把双刃剑,它在给人们带来方便的同时,也会产生一些负面作用。

6 . Technology has changed our lives and reshapes the way we live. Some of us love it and some of us are frustrated (懊恼的) with it. This is clear as most of us are guilty of being addicted to the Internet and social media.     1     Technology has created a whole new world and brought endless opportunities.

The invention of airplanes, ships and spacecraft always allows people to visit other countries and even other planets. As long as we follow the laws of immigration, we can go to any country we like.     2

In addition, technology is also used by a large number of teachers to improve their teaching. It can make the lessons more interactive and interesting for students. E-learning is possible with the use of the Internet connection and computers. People wishing to study for a degree can do so at their comfortable homes.     3     Teachers can post notes and videos on the Internet and students can study and learn whenever they are ready.

4     You don’t have to walk around with a large sum of cash any more because you can make purchases and payments electronically. Online banking is secure and convenient for online shopping. You don’t have to worry that your cash might be stolen by someone.

However, we have to say that technology can be a double-edged sword. Nowadays, instead of paying attention to the conversation we are having face to face, we just take the phone. We are distracted by smartphones and technology in general. But we can’t blame technology. We should not blame ourselves, either.     5     Indeed, technology is addictive, but our focus shouldn’t be on phones or computers, but on people and face-to-face conversations.

A.This gives students flexibility.
B.What we need to do is to find some balance.
C.This makes it easy for students to make progress.
D.Nevertheless, we have seen some benefits of technology.
E.When it comes to shopping, technology is also of great help.
F.Besides, we have suffered a lot from modern communication.

7 . Every time we move to a new place, we’re faced with the challenge of making new friends. Connecting with a community is important to your sense of belonging, but it may take three to six months to finally make new friends, or even longer.     1    .

Get the word out

Tell your friends, family and co-workers that you’re moving and looking to meet new people. Make sure to communicate what kind of connections you’re looking for, like someone to show you around town. Use this time to do some research. Look up if your favourite coffee shop has branches in your new neighborhood.     2    . These groups, like volunteer organizations, can offer you a sense of familiarity.

Add more routine (惯例) to your day

Setting time aside for activities, communities or places you love can help you feel more at home. Do you go on a run every morning? Try running at the same park for a week. Or go back to that restaurant around the block at least once a month.     3     . By doing the same things, you’re seeing the same faces and you will become less shy to ask a question because you see them all the time.

Explore interest groups

4     . Nowadays, you can find most of them online — for food, sports, or religion, just to name a few. You could also use your move as an opportunity to try things that you’ve been eager to try for years. That way, you feel connected to the city with the good memory of you excitedly exploring something new.

    5

You don’t have to push yourself to make friends within weeks. Try to focus on being connected in the moment. When you’re new in town, you may feel shy or even frightened to share your true self. But you’ll find your people more quickly if you devote yourself into the things that you are interested. Laying that up is one way to really attract people with same interests, and soon you will find yourself connected.

A.Reconnect with old friends
B.Focus on the connection, not the friendship
C.And here are some tips on making friends anywhere we go.
D.You can also be more intentional about making new connections.
E.There’s also a good chance you’ll find similar community groups.
F.Group settings like interest are also helpful for meeting new people.
G.These acts seem small, but are of great importance in making connections.

8 . Many of us are lonelier than ever. We can go shopping and avoid speaking to a single person. Automated voice son phones and machines suck the contact and relational element out of day-to-day life, so much so that experts say that we are experiencing a loneliness disease.

According to Dr. Lalitaa, loneliness is the feeling we get when our need for rewarding social contact and relationships is not met. But loneliness is not always the same as being alone. Loneliness is a state of mind linked to wanting human contact but feeling alone. People can be alone and not feel lonely, or they can have contact with people and still experience feelings of loneliness.

Loneliness is a universal human emotion that is both complex and unique to each individual. There are many contributing factors to loneliness, such as illness, relationships breaking down, moving country, changing jobs or not being understood by co-workers, retiring, starting university, etc.

We cannot underestimate the impact loneliness can have on our physical and mental wellbeing. According to research, loneliness has comparable health risks to smoking 15cigarettes a day, and people who feel lonely are more likely to die earlier and suffer from heart attacks. Dr. Lalitaa says, “People often say to me, ‘It’s too late to meet new people as an adult.’ Having human connect ion can look different for each person, but this can become a block, stopping them going out, trying new things and connecting with new people. Remember, it is never too late to make good, meaningful connections.”

However, don’t put pressure on yourself. A meaningful relationship takes time. It is not just created overnight. Also, take some time to sit with yourself and venture (冒险) into some of the things that you like doing. “The first thing I would say is not to deny or distance the feeling. Acknowledge it and then you can choose to focus on ways to help yourself,” says Dr.Lalitaa.

1. How does the author clarify what loneliness is?
A.By stating arguments.B.By giving examples.

C.Being aware of and recognizing it.
D.Making friends from all walks of life.

9 . Jace Tunnell, the founder of Nurdle I troll and Reserve Director at the University of Texas Marine Science Institute, is listening to the same question often.

“I hear every day, somebody says, ‘What is a nurdle?’” he said.

Tunnell explained nurdles are tiny balls of plastic that are typically used to make almost every plastic item we use, so they’re everywhere! He said nurdles are usually spilled (溢出) during transport from cargo ships or railroad cars. “These things would be out here for hundreds of years if we’re not picking them up,” Tunnell said while on a recent Nurdle Patrol cleanup along Galveston Bay.

Since 2018, Nurdle Patrol has grown to thousands of volunteers worldwide. Many people -volunteer with Nurdle Patrol and work for the Galveston Bay Foundation. Nurdle Patrol groups upload their findings to the nonprofit’s website map. It’s marked in colors to show where the highest concentration of nurdles is found.

“They look natural, and birds think that they’re food,” Tunnell said, “Birds, fish, sea turtles and other sea animals can eat nurdles and finally die from hunger because of a false sensation of fullness and lack of nutrition.”

I ended up finding 123 nurdles in 10 minutes. That’s high concentration,” Tunnell said about a recent cleanup. “I plan to take those to an elected official and say, ‘Look, these are what I found on our beaches here. We need to do something about this.’ So, it kind of puts in motion change that can happen.”

10 . A major emergency can create hundreds of thousands of refugees (难民) overnight. The most immediate way in which organizations like UNHCR and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) can help these refugees is by setting up refugee camps. Refugee camps are designed to be temporary, but they often remain in place for decades. In some parts of the world, children have grown up and had children of their own without ever leaving their camp.

Critics argue that they force refugees to be entirely dependent on donations. One journalist who visited the Nyadeou camp in the south of the Republic of Guinea A (Africa) in 2001, described how normally peaceful people were reduced to fighting with each other when the food truck arrived.

Refugees camps can easily become dirty, overcrowded and are overrun with disease or crime. In many camps, drug dealers hide themselves among the majority of innocent refugees.

One alternative for refugees is to settle in a town or village, making them become part of the local population. This is known as the “self-settlement”. Several aid agencies argue that the self-settlement is a better option in many cases than refugee camps. They say that self-settled refugees can start to rebuild their lives straight away, and are freer and safer than refugees in camps. Oxfam, the ICRC and many other international aid agencies support programs in which refugees are helped to self-settle.

Representatives of UNHCR argue that refugee camps are the best way of saving the greatest possible numbers of lives. They point out that it is much easier to help people if they are all gathered in one place. This is certainly true of emergency relief, for example the distribution of food, water, shelters and medical supplies. It is also true that long-term aid programs, such as family tracing, orphan support and, perhaps most importantly, education, can all be carried out much more easily when refugees are all living together in one place.

1. Who are responsible for the refugees’ dependence on donations?
A.Critics.B.Children.C.Refugee camps.D.UNHCR and the ICRC.
2. What advantage can self-settled refugees enjoy?
A.More personal aid.B.More living space.
C.Better training programs.D.A better sense of security.
3. What benefit can gathering refugees in one place bring?
A.It can help save much land.B.It’s easier for them to get schooling.
C.It can reduce the number of orphans.D.It allows families to better help each other.
4. Which of the following is not discussed in the text?
A.The advantages of refugee camps.B.The disadvantages of refugee camps.
C.The advantages of the self-settlement.D.The disadvantages of the self-settlement.
