文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。口音是我们身份的重要组成部分,同时口音对学习一门新语言也很重要,本文主要讲述了口音产生的原因,正确的口音的重要性以及如何的改善口音。

1 . Accents are an important part of our identity. An accent gives clues about who we are, and the community we belong to or wish to belong to.     1

What is the difference between accents and pronunciation?

Accents are about localized ways of speaking a language. A French person may speak English flawlessly (完美无瑕地), just with a French accent.     2     However, pronunciation is something that — as a learner— you can get right or wrong. If your pronunciation is correct, you can communicate effectively with others whatever your accent is.

    3

If you think back historically people were much more localized with generation after generation of families living in the same small villages and few people traveled out of that area during their lifetimes. So over many generations differences in accent emerged and became very distinct to particular areas. Mountainous villages that are not easily accessible often develop very strong and distinctive accents.

How important is it to get an accent right?

If you’re moving to a certain part of a country, you might want to integrate better with your new community.     4     That’s because it shows a sense of belonging to the community you are trying to fit in with.

How to improve your accent?

5     And then learners should consider which sounds exist in the language you’re learning and then spend some time in front of the mirror practicing moving your tongue and mouth to get those new and different sounds. And learners should be aware of stress and tone, which can sometimes even change the meaning of words.

A.Where do accents and pronunciation emerge?
B.They’re also important for those learning a new language.
C.Try to adapt your speech to sound more like the locals’ speech.
D.The best way is to learn the specific accent of that region.
E.Where do different types of accents come from?
F.That’s fine because there is no wrong or right with an accent.
G.Learners should first think about which sounds don’t exist in your native language.

3 . For most people, life has become a burden on their shoulders, and its weight is growing heavier and heavier, until one day they can’t carry it anymore. So how can we design a life that is less complex and more meaningful? With minimalism (极简主义).     1     The following ways will assist you in your journey to living a simper yet fuller life.

2     Most people’s living space is filled with things that are never used and don’t contribute to their well-being. Separate the ones you do need from the ones you don’t, and throw the latter right into the dustin — or better, give them away to people who might actually benefit from them.

Appreciate all the amazing things you already have. We constantly compare ourselves to others who seem happier, more beautiful and more important than us. We try our best to imitate those we envy.     3     We need to stop comparing and accept ourselves for who we are, with all our imperfections. Take a moment to appreciate what you have.

Do one thing at a time. Minimalist living actually means making the most out of each and every moment. We’re usually carrying out different tasks at the same time. So whatever we are doing, our mind is partly wondering somewhere else.     4

Develop mindfulness.     5     Thus you need to develop mindfulness. Mindfulness means fully attending to what’s happening in the present. There are many ways one can do so. Perhaps the most common way is to sit for about 30 minutes somewhere comfortably with your upper back straight and pay full attention to your breath as it’s coming in and out through your nose. In this way, you won’t be distracted by your thoughts.

A.It is about enjoying life more with less.
B.Stop consuming products you don’t need.
C.Yet no matter how much we try, we always fail.
D.Get rid of things that don’t serve your happiness.
E.minimalist living requires a calm and undisturbed mind.
F.Stop multitasking and concentrate on a single thing at a time.
G.Unfortunately, our minds are filled with worries in our busy lives.

Through this process, I improved my leadership abilities and communication skills. I've become mature (成熟的). I am not a kid any more.

9 . Rainforests are home to a rich variety of medicinal plants, food, birds and animals. Can you believe that a single bush(灌木丛)in the Amazon may have more species of ants than the whole of Britain! About 480 varieties of trees may be found in just one hectare of rainforest.

Rainforests are the lungs of the planet-storing vast quantities of carbon dioxide and producing a significant amount of the world's oxygen. Rainforests have their own perfect system for ensuring their own survival; the tall trees make a canopy(树冠层)of branches and leaves which protect themselves, smaller plants, and the forest animals from heavy rain, intense dry heat from the sun and strong winds.

Amazingly, the trees grow in such a way that their leaves and branches, although close together, never actually touch those of another tree. Scientists think this is the plants' way to prevent the spread of any tree diseases and make life more difficult for leaf-eating insects like caterpillars. To survive in the forest, animals must climb, jump or fly across the gaps. The ground floor of the forest is not all tangled leaves and bushes, like in films, but is actually fairly clear. It is where dead leaves turn into food for the trees and other forest life.

They are not called rainforests for nothing! Rainforests can generate 75%of their own rain. At least 80 inches of rain a year is normal-and in some areas there may be as much as 430 inches of rain annually. This is real rain-your umbrella may protect you in a shower, but it won't keep you dry if there is a full rainstorm. In just two hours, streams can rise ten to twenty feet. The humidity(湿气)of large rainforests contributes to the formation of rainclouds that may travel to other countries in need of rain.

1. What can we learn about rainforests from the first paragraph?
A.They produce oxygen.B.They cover a vast area.
C.They are well managed.D.They are rich in wildlife.
2. Which of the following contributes most to the survival of rainforests?
A.Heavy rainsB.Big trees.
C.Small plants.D.Forest animals.
3. Why do the leaves and branches of different trees avoid touching each other?
A.For more sunlight.B.For more growing space.
C.For self-protection.D.For the detection of insects.
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Life-Giving RainforestsB.The Law of the Jungle
C.Animals in the AmazonD.Weather in Rainforests

10 . The number of giraffes is becoming smaller across Africa, according to the Giraffe Conservation Foundation. The total population has dropped by 40 percent in the last 15 years. Surprisingly, even scientists haven’t given much attention to giraffes. We are learning more about their ecology(生态), but what we know is still way behind what we know about other species. “It’s a silent extinction,” said Dr. Julian Fennessy, a wildlife scientist.

“The main reason for the smaller number of giraffes is their loss of living places,” said Fennessy, “as an increasing part of land is used for farming. But hunting also has a big influence.” “You might wonder why hunters would focus on giraffes. First of all, once a giraffe is brought down, there is lots of meat with a small amount of effort. Besides, there is another thing encouraging the hunting. In Tanzania, Fennessy says, the latest word on the street is that eating giraffe meat could cure AIDS. Fresh giraffe heads and bones can be sold at prices of up to $140 per piece.

Another widespread misconception about giraffes is that they are everywhere. Look at kids’ books which are full of giraffes. They are always in zoo collections. They can be seen easily, so you don’t think we have to worry about them. But the truth is that they are in danger of extinction. There is a lack of right and true data.

Fennessy and other researchers are now pulling together the data needed to improve the situation of the entire giraffe species and all nine subspecies(亚种). The information will be used to change the giraffe’s listing on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red list, which now lists the species as of “least concern” but two subspecies as “endangered”. “It’s a lot of work to gather the necessary information,” Fennessy says. “And several other giraffe subspecies will be recommended for endangered listings next year or the year after.” He hopes that the world will finally start to take notice of how endangered these beloved animals have become.

1. By saying “It’s a silent extinction”, Fennessy tells us that ________.
A.giraffes are unpopular in Africa
B.the giraffes is always silent in daily life
C.the ecology of Africa needs more attention
D.the extinction happens without enough attention
2. The misconception in Paragraph 3 can be corrected by ________.
A.preventing illegal hunting in Africa
B.rewriting kids’ books about giraffes
C.providing reliable data about giraffes
D.spreading scientific knowledge of AIDS
3. The final purpose of Fennessy’s great efforts is to ________.
A.collect more information about giraffes
B.raise public awareness of protecting giraffes
C.prove giraffes will disappear in the next few years
D.work with the International Union for Conservation of Nature
