“I wish you good health, happiness and longevity!” The allegro (快板) in the Chinese language resounded in a hall at Prince Sultan University, during a cultural event to celebrate the Chinese New Year.

    1    (crowd) with enthusiastic visitors, the event held on Monday afternoon showed the rich traditions of the Chinese festival,     2     fell on February 10 this year.

Abdullah Hazmi, a student who is studying the Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) Level 2, expressed his     3    (admire) for the experience of tasting traditional Chinese foods and learning about the art of Chinese tea. He said that his encounter with the Spring Festival’s customs inspired a     4    (deep) interest in Chinese culture than ever,     5    (lead) him to learn more about the Chinese language.

Faisal Islam, who     6    (recent) has began his Chinese learning journey, shared how brush writing sparked his interest in the beauty of Chinese     7    (character) and the charm of Chinese culture. The event also featured traditional Spring Festival scrolls (卷轴), penned by students from China’s Tsinghua University. These volunteers presented plenty     8     cultural performances, including traditional Chinese dragon dances and tai chi.

Zhang Xinying, the Chinese dean of the Confucius Institute at Prince Sultan University, said, “It is not only a Spring Festival celebration, but a grand event to bring Chinese culture into the campus, fostering deeper Sino-Saudi cultural exchanges.”

The Confucius Institute has witnessed     9     growing interest in Chinese language and culture since its opening on June 4, 2023, with nearly 100 students     10    (include) in five classes to learn junior- and medium-level Chinese language.

Fan Jinshi, an archaeologist from Beijing University, first visited the Mogao caves as an undergraduate student in 1962. Despite the caves’ tough conditions, Fan was determined to study national cultural heritage (遗产)     1     stayed to pursue her dream.

Over time, Fan’s commitment to preserving national cultural heritage grew     2    (strong). She joined the Communist Party of China in 1974 and became even more determined to protect the Mogao caves when they were     3     (official) open to tourists in 1979.     4    (face) with the challenge of balancing conservation and tourism, Fan knew that a solution had to be found. She     5     (convince) that the caves’ social importance far outweighed their economic potential and that scientific protection was the key to their     6     (survive).

In the late 1980s, Fan came up with     7     innovative plan to digitize the Mogao caves, permanently preserving the murals (壁画), painted cultures, and historical data. In 2016,Digital Dunhuang was launched online, allowing people worldwide     8    (enjoy)comprehensive images of the caves.

In her eighties, Fan Jinshi is as busy as before, sparing no effort to conserve and manage the caves. She hopes that young people will carry     9     the “Mogao Spirit” and build a better Dunhuang Academy,     10     she spent her lifetime. “Let this be my epitaph(墓志铭),” Fan says, “I’ve done all I could for Dunhuang.”

According to     1     recent survey, the     2     (major) of doctors believed their incomes did not match how hard they worked. The survey found that about 50 percent of the doctors were not     3     (satisfy) with their working conditions, especially those from hospitals in small towns. Local-produced     5     (ingredient) such as Gangu chili, Qin’an peppercorns, and Dingxi potatoes are the secrets to the unique flavor and     6     (attract) appearance of Tianshui malatang. Gangu chili has a bright red color and a spicy fragrance with sweetness. Potatoes     7     (produce) in Dingxi, “hometown of Chinese potatoes”, have a high starch (淀粉) content. It is these special ingredients     8     make Tianshui malatang stand out.

Food has     9    (obvious) become a new hot spot for small Chinese cities to catch the spotlight on social media platforms. The Tianshui government is also catching every opportunity to promote Tianshui’s development with a small bowl     10     malatang.

Chinese characters evolved(演变) from pictures and signs, and the art of calligraphy developed naturally from this special writing system of Chinese characters. By     1     (use) a brush to write Chinese characters, calligraphers can express their thoughts, feelings, and     2     (personality) in a point or a line, so Chinese calligraphy is also called the art of lines. The Chinese saying “The handwriting reveals (透露) the writer” is related to calligraphy. It means people are     3     (typical) judged by their handwriting. The written characters show the calligrapher’s way     4     (understand) life.

Practicing calligraphy helps     5     individual to achieve     6     (relax) and inner peace. In the past, children     7     (train) at an early age to practice writing. Great attention is paid to calligraphy today thanks       8     exhibitions and competitions among both the young and the old from many walks of life. To learn calligraphy, one will need a brush, ink, paper, and ink stone,     9     are commonly referred to as the Four Treasures of Study. As Chinese culture spreads throughout the world nowadays, calligraphy is becoming     10     (popular) than ever before.

Qiyuan Garden is a classical type private garden     1    (locate)in Wuyuan Township of Haiyan County in Zhejiang Province. It is one of the top ten gardens in China. The old name of it is Feng’s Garden. During the Qing Dynasty,     2     owner of the Garden, Feng Zuanzhai, settled here.

The layout of the whole garden expresses the     3    (harmony)manner between water and mountains. The garden has a large area of water     4     it is dotted with a few constructions. The entrance of the garden is on the west side. In the middle of the garden is the flower hall with bridges in front. Pathways here consist of waterways, mountain holes, underground tunnels and fly-over beams(飞梁),    9     will bring you to a dreamland. Beautiful gloriettes(亭子)    10    (distribute)evenly in the garden to provide a place for relaxation.
