Tianshui in Northwest China’s Gansu Province is sweeping social media with     1     (it) local street dish malatang, literally (字面上) “numbingly spicy soup”, a one-pot noodle soup with hotpot flavor.

I began my journey studying in China in March 2016, when I came to Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU) to get my Bachelor’s degree in Chinese language. As a youth from the US, I feel that     1     (study) in China is one of the best ways to     2     (true) understand this amazing country. Having studied at BLCU, I have the chance not only to interact with international students from all over the world but     3     (make) friends with local Chinese students.

Northwest China’s Tianshui spicy hot pot goes viral on social media

Tianshui malatang, a version of a spicy hot pot in northwest China’s Gansu Province, has recently gone viral on Chinese media,     1     (attract) many tourists from all over the country to taste the dish.

Malatang,     2     means “numbingly (使麻木地) spicy soup”, is a one-pot vegetables with hot pot flavor. It is a tongue-numbing spicy dish loved for its     3     (satisfy) flavor and the richness of colors. Different     4     Sichuan cuisine, which is famous for its hot pot, the secrets for tickling the taste buds come from local specialty ingredients in Tianshui－Maiji peppercorns (胡椒)     5     Gangu chili peppers.

According to the China News Agency, а restaurant owner in Tianshui said he had been serving more than 400 customers a day, as people from other cities and     6     (province) drive to the city to try the malatang.

“There is a long queue outside my restaurant recently,” one shop owner said. One customer posted on Chinese social media that she had queued for six hours     7     (get) the dish. Many malatang shops in Tianshui have even extended     8     (they) business hours to satisfy the increasing number of customers from all over the country.

Learning languages has many advantages: feeling confident when travelling abroad, making friends     1     (international), being able to read books in the original, and a lot more, like studying and working in other     2     (country). Most people live under the stereotype (刻板印象) that they lose their learning abilities with age. However, if faced     3     a challenge when there is no other way except to learn the new foreign language, adult people can show great results.
