Eleven years after having Alzheimer’s (阿兹海默病) disease, 91-year-old Wu Mingzhu sometimes fails     1     (recognize) her previous colleagues or even family members     2     live by her side. But her memory of the melon varieties (种类) she developed while working in Xinjiang remains.

Born in Hubei Province, she     3     (admit) to Southwest Agricultural College in Chongqing in the late 1940s. Wu filed     4     application in 1955, and finally received an agreement. In the winter of the same year, she boarded a truck with all her     5     (possession) and left for Xinjiang.

Though local watermelons and muskmelons (甜瓜) tasted sweet, Wu found that the local farmers mainly relied on     6     (tradition) farming techniques, and there was still much room for progress     7     the quantity and quality of their melons.

Starting in 1956, Wu and her colleagues met with local farmers to explore resources in the summer heat of over 40℃. She experimented with different methods on melons during the day, and read documents that     8     (record) 44 melon varieties before she arrived under the candle at night.

She developed new resources—10 watermelon varieties and 19 muskmelon varieties, featuring characteristics like better disease resistance, finer fruit quality, and greater adaptability,     9     (help) the farmers fatten their wallets. Yu Rong, a Chinese artist, thinks of a new way to introduce     1     ancient story of Hua Mulan in her picture book. In the book, I Am Hua Mulan, she tells the story by     2     (combine) paper-cutting with international artistic styles. She places Shaanxi paper-cuts over western-style pencil sketches (素描)     3     (create) a typical presentation of Chinese elements (元素), which turns out to be a     4     (success) and impressive breakthrough.

Hua Mulan,     5     story has been told by generations in China, is a fighter from the Northern Wei Dynasty (386-534). As a devoted daughter, she dressed herself as a man to serve in the army     6     place of her father. Mulan’s characteristics, such as courage, kindness and a disinterested attitude toward fame and fortune, made     7     (she) one of the most respected historical Chinese heroics. Mulan’s story has been adapted     8     (frequent) in modern media, including TV shows, video games and literature. For example, in 1998, Disney produced a film named Mulan, which     9     (consider) a great success by critics and the public.

To better tell the story, Yu Rong takes inspiration from her several     10     (visit)to sites of ancient battles and Henan Province’s Yuju Opera. After years of preparation she finally made this extraordinary work.

Su Mingjuan, the former poster girl for China’s most influential education charity, has recently come back in the     1     (nation) spotlight as a delegate (代表) to the 20th National Congress of the Communism Party of China.

In 1991, a photograph of the then 8-year-old Su, with a pair of large, crystal-clear eyes     2     (cry) for knowledge, touched the heartstrings of numerous people.

Su was born to a poor fanning family in Jinzhai, East China’s Anhui province. The image of her, then a first-grader,    3     (shoot) by a photographer who went into the remote mountainous areas to see     4     the Project Hope had helped rural drop-outs (退学者).
