Last weekend, I went to Mark’s new house near a forest for a little get-together. After lunch when I was chatting with him and his wife Cody, he asked me, “Hey, Thora, have you ever been to a secret spot?” Before I could even finish saying no, Cody and Mark were already at the door with their jackets on. And the next moment we were heading out into the forest with a camera, a fishing net and a plastic bucket (桶).
We walked through the forest along a path by a small river. Breathing the fresh air, we three talked and laughed all the way.

When he spotted the merry bunch in the bus, he would wave good-naturedly. Although Mohi was likable, he was too lost in his own thoughts to make friends. His classmates found him amusing but they ignored him most of the time. Only Hamed, who sat next to Mohi, tried to be his friend.
The following Monday, Mohi did not turn up at school. His classmates were a little disappointed but quickly forgot about him. After school, Hamed decided to walk over to Mohi’s house to check on him. As he approached the gate, he could hear violin music. Mohi must be listening to music, he thought. The gate was not locked. Hamed let himself in. He called Mohi’s name a few times but there was no response. The music played on. Hamed looked in through a window. His eyes widened in surprise. In the middle of the living room, Mohi was playing the violin. His eyes were closed in concentration as he drew the bow over the strings expertly. He played perfectly, so much so that it sounded like a recording. Hamed left quietly. When Teacher’s Day came around, Hamed had a plan.

Is that how Terry always got good grades? She felt really angry at Terry and thought about telling the teacher, but what would everyone else think of her? It wasn’t fair! Mo never cheated and she failed lots of exams. Terry had already put her phone away when Mo looked up again. She looked back at Mo and smiled sadly. “Stop writing and put your pens down” said Mr Reed as he started to collect the exam papers. Oh no, Mo hadn’t answered two of the questions. She was going to fail again!
The next exam was history. That was Mo’s favourite subject but she didn’t feel good. “It wasn’t fair!” she thought. “Terry was getting good grades by cheating all that time. And I thought we were friends!” Just then, Mr Reed walked past her table. “Mr Reed...”
Mo was sitting behind Terry again in the history exam, but Terry didn’t take her phone out. Mo was feeling bad again. Why did she tell Mr Reed? But it was too late now. He wanted her to look at him and nod if she saw that Terry had her phone in the exam. She was on the last question when she saw that Terry had her phone under the table. Without thinking, Mo looked up and nodded to Mr Reed.

My father bought a motorcycle years ago. He said we could use it wherever we wanted to go because he wasn't always able to get around to shuttling (接送) us. As time went by, these strengthened my determination to ride and I was no longer afraid of riding whatever road I would take One afternoon, my father called me and asked me to take the empty bucket (水桶), he left at home to the farm. He had hung up before I could tell him the situation at home. Mom had gone downtown to meet a customer and left Ryan to me. so I couldn’t go to the farm.
I took Ryan to our neighbors and had them help me look after him. But when I was about to leave for the farm, Ryan ran to me, crying for going with me. I told him to stay there because the mountain road was so rocky and it was too dangerous for him to go up there. Still, he continued to cry aloud and insisted on riding with me Having tried in vain to persuade him and considering that my father urgently needed the bucket, I gave in. So after placing Ryan at the back of the motorcycle in a hurry, I started to take the road, going to the mountain with him and the bucket.

I began to miss at least one day of school a week to hang out with them. Then I missed two, three, even four days in a row.
But while I was out having fun with my “friends,” inside I was full of conflict, unhappiness and regret. I stopped practicing my English sentences in front of the mirror and instead practiced, “I don’t know why the school called, mom. There must be something wrong in the system because I did not miss school today.”

Her mother took her to a store and Desiree picked out a balloon with HAPPY BIRTHDAY above a drawing of The Little Mermaid (美人鱼). Desire and her father had often watched it.
The child's eyes shone as they were on the way to Ken's grave. Then Desiree dictated (口述) a letter to her Dad. “Daddy, Happy birthday, I love you and miss you,” she rattled off (快速说). “I hope you get this and can write to me on my birthday in January.”
Her mother wrote the message and their address on a small piece of paper, which was then wrapped in plastic and tied to the end of the string on the balloon. Finally, Desiree let fly the balloon. For almost an hour, they watched the shining spot of silver grow smaller and smaller till disappear. “Now Dad's going to write back to me,” Desiree said confidently.
Every day since they'd flew the balloon, Desiree had asked her mother, “Do you think Daddy has my balloon yet?” Several weeks passed, and she stopped asking.
