Last weekend, I went to Mark’s new house near a forest for a little get-together. After lunch when I was chatting with him and his wife Cody, he asked me, “Hey, Thora, have you ever been to a secret spot?” Before I could even finish saying no, Cody and Mark were already at the door with their jackets on. And the next moment we were heading out into the forest with a camera, a fishing net and a plastic bucket (桶).

We walked through the forest along a path by a small river. Breathing the fresh air, we three talked and laughed all the way.

“Hey! What are you guys doing ?” someone suddenly shouted from behind. Mark and Cody’s eyes immediately widened, and without a word they started running. I had no choice but to follow them, getting my shoes wet and dirty with mud. We probably ran for about 10 minutes before Mark and Cody slowed down. I stopped to catch my breath and asked, “Who was that?”

Mark replied, “The most annoying neighbor ever. There’s no telling what could happen if he caught up with us. He is always making fun of us. I dislike him.” We kept walking on for a few more minutes. Then a beautiful lake appeared before our eyes. “Wow! Amazing!” I shouted and could hardly hold back my excitement. The lake was large and the water was deep and blue, looking so peaceful with tall trees around it.

A sense of shame creeping upon her heart, she could only force a smile with burning ears. But also, a warm current surged through her brain and body. Everything will be fine.” Hearing these words, Linda felt a ray of bright sunshine lighting up her life.

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Max loved action comics and movies. He worked in the car park of a big supermarket. It didn’t seem to be a good job, but Max didn’t have any qualifications. This was the best job he could find. Max collected the shopping carts (购物车) that shoppers left in the car park. He took the shopping carts back to the entrance of the supermarket. It was sometimes hard work but it was not difficult. So Max had a lot of spare time to dream. He dreamed of being a hero, like Superman or Batman. Of course, his dreams were crazy but as Max told himself, dreams were free of charge.

Today it was very wet and windy. Max was wearing a long blue raincoat that had the name of the supermarket on the back. Max was standing next to a row of carts. He would push them together and then he would take them all back to the supermarket door. He looked around to see if there were any more left in the car park. Though there were designated (指定的) places for shoppers to leave the carts after shopping, some people were still so lazy that they just left them where they thought it was convenient for them. Just then Max saw two young boys in jackets wandering around aimlessly.

“They seem like students. They should be in school,” Max thought, “What are they doing here?” He then saw a small lady pushing a cart towards her car. The cart was full of shopping bags. She looked old and the weather was very bad. “I’ll go and take her cart for her,” Max said to himself.

Max started walking across the car park. The lady put her cart behind her car. She walked to her car door to unlock it when the two boys ran towards the cart. They immediately took the cart and quickly pushed it towards the road. The lady was terribly shocked and began to cry out.

The whole class burst out laughing as Mohi rushed into the classroom. He was a strange sight. His half-buttoned white shirt revealed a red striped pajama(睡衣), and instead of white school shoes, he had on a pair of bright green sandals(凉鞋) that were two sizes too big.

Mohi said in a low voice, “Sorry, teacher,” and ran hurriedly to his seat. Mr. Tan glared at the rest of the students. The laughter quickly died down. Mohi’s classmates always looked forward to Mondays. They would be entertained by Mohi’s late arrival and his odd appearance which usually included inappropriate clothing.

Mohi lived just a street away from the school. He walked to school daily. Students passing by in buses would yell his name together just to see him jump and stop in his tracks. When he spotted the merry bunch in the bus, he would wave good-naturedly. Although Mohi was likable, he was too lost in his own thoughts to make friends. His classmates found him amusing but they ignored him most of the time. Only Hamed, who sat next to Mohi, tried to be his friend.

The following Monday, Mohi did not turn up at school. His classmates were a little disappointed but quickly forgot about him. After school, Hamed decided to walk over to Mohi’s house to check on him. As he approached the gate, he could hear violin music. Mohi must be listening to music, he thought. The gate was not locked. Hamed let himself in. He called Mohi’s name a few times but there was no response. The music played on. Hamed looked in through a window. His eyes widened in surprise. In the middle of the living room, Mohi was playing the violin. His eyes were closed in concentration as he drew the bow over the strings expertly. He played perfectly, so much so that it sounded like a recording. Hamed left quietly. When Teacher’s Day came around, Hamed had a plan.

Mo was waiting outside her class. She was feeling sick. She had two exams that day. Physics was first and she hated physics, it was her worst subject. Terry looked back at her from the front of the line, then looked away quickly. Mo thought she looked guilty. She didn’t have a problem with physics. She didn’t have a problem with anything!

“Hi, Mo, it’s your favourite exam today!” said Nima as she arrived. Terry looked back again. “What’s wrong with her?” said Nima. “I thought you were friends.” “Yes, so did I,” said Mo. “But she looks absent-minded and acts strangely these days. She promised to help me revise for the physics exam, but then she ignored all my calls and texts!” said Mo angrily while going into the exam room.

Mo couldn’t answer question number five. She looked up and saw Terry sitting in the next row. Mo was surprised. Terry was holding her phone under the table and she was reading from it. Is that how Terry always got good grades? She felt really angry at Terry and thought about telling the teacher, but what would everyone else think of her? It wasn’t fair! Mo never cheated and she failed lots of exams. Terry had already put her phone away when Mo looked up again. She looked back at Mo and smiled sadly. “Stop writing and put your pens down” said Mr Reed as he started to collect the exam papers. Oh no, Mo hadn’t answered two of the questions. She was going to fail again!

The next exam was history. That was Mo’s favourite subject but she didn’t feel good. “It wasn’t fair!” she thought. “Terry was getting good grades by cheating all that time. And I thought we were friends!” Just then, Mr Reed walked past her table. “Mr Reed...”

Mo was sitting behind Terry again in the history exam, but Terry didn’t take her phone out. Mo was feeling bad again. Why did she tell Mr Reed? But it was too late now. He wanted her to look at him and nod if she saw that Terry had her phone in the exam. She was on the last question when she saw that Terry had her phone under the table. Without thinking, Mo looked up and nodded to Mr Reed.

My father bought a motorcycle years ago. He said we could use it wherever we wanted to go because he wasn't always able to get around to shuttling (接送) us. However, nobody could ride except him in our family, so he decided to teach me how to ride the motorcycle. Young as I was, I longed to learn it because it could help our family a lot. Living in a remote area we had a hard time in terms of transportation.

Although I had to experience lots of bruises (擦伤) before I mastered riding, it was worth it. The motorcycle was a really big help. I could send my younger brother Ryan to school early. I could take Mom to town for our little business. Sometimes I even could ride to the farm, up in a steep mountain, to lend my father a hand. As time went by, these strengthened my determination to ride and I was no longer afraid of riding whatever road I would take One afternoon, my father called me and asked me to take the empty bucket (水桶), he left at home to the farm. He had hung up before I could tell him the situation at home. Mom had gone downtown to meet a customer and left Ryan to me. so I couldn’t go to the farm.

I took Ryan to our neighbors and had them help me look after him. But when I was about to leave for the farm, Ryan ran to me, crying for going with me. I told him to stay there because the mountain road was so rocky and it was too dangerous for him to go up there. Still, he continued to cry aloud and insisted on riding with me Having tried in vain to persuade him and considering that my father urgently needed the bucket, I gave in. So after placing Ryan at the back of the motorcycle in a hurry, I started to take the road, going to the mountain with him and the bucket.

“Happy birthday, dear Rhea, happy birthday to you!” Silence penetrated (穿透) the room.

“Make a wish," my mom said in a sweet whisper. Now, I’m a straight A student, confident and popular, but that’s not what I was a year ago. It was my mom’s love that made me what I am today. Looking around the room filled with my friends, I couldn't help but smile.

I wish...

Memories flooded back. The December morning breeze brushed my long, black hair as I stepped towards the doors of Hagenberg High. It was my first day of school. Only two weeks ago, my mom and I migrated to America, hoping for a bright new life.

My English was poor, and I was alone, like a lost little kid. I unknowingly avoided interacting with anyone because I was afraid they’d laugh in my face. When my English was better, I decided, I would come up to people and maybe manage to say, “Whussup?”

Finally in gym class, a friendly brown face. She almost looked like me, only happier .Her name was Caroline. At lunchtime we found ourselves enjoying the cafeteria food. She wanted me to meet her friends. “Don’t worry Rhea,” she assured me, calling me “sister”, “You’ll fit right in.”

And I did. It was as if some foreign soul entered my body and made me do things against my will. I found myself drinking beer, smoking cigarettes and skipping school. I didn't even like the taste of beer. The moment it touched my tongue I felt like I had to spit it back. But I didn't. I couldn’t afford to look bad and lose my new “friends”. I began to miss at least one day of school a week to hang out with them. Then I missed two, three, even four days in a row.

But while I was out having fun with my “friends,” inside I was full of conflict, unhappiness and regret. I stopped practicing my English sentences in front of the mirror and instead practiced, “I don’t know why the school called, mom. There must be something wrong in the system because I did not miss school today.”

Desiree, a 4-year-old girl, was sobbing quietly over her father, Ken, who had died nine months earlier. She was hugging a photograph of her father with her fingers running around his face. “Daddy”, she said softly, “Why won't you come back?”

Instead of gradually adjusting to her father's death, Desiree refused to accept it “Daddy will be home soon,” she'd tell her mother. “He's at work.” When she played with her toy telephone, she pretended she was chatting with her father “I miss you, Daddy,” she'd say. “When will you come back?” Desiree's situation made her mother worried.

Days later, it was Ken's birthday. “How will I send him a card?” Desiree asked her mother “How about if we tie a litter to a balloon.” her mother said, “and send it up to heaven?” Desiree's eyes immediately lit up.

Her mother took her to a store and Desiree picked out a balloon with HAPPY BIRTHDAY above a drawing of The Little Mermaid (美人鱼). Desire and her father had often watched it.

The child's eyes shone as they were on the way to Ken's grave. Then Desiree dictated (口述) a letter to her Dad. “Daddy, Happy birthday, I love you and miss you,” she rattled off (快速说). “I hope you get this and can write to me on my birthday in January.”

Her mother wrote the message and their address on a small piece of paper, which was then wrapped in plastic and tied to the end of the string on the balloon. Finally, Desiree let fly the balloon. For almost an hour, they watched the shining spot of silver grow smaller and smaller till disappear. “Now Dad's going to write back to me,” Desiree said confidently.

Every day since they'd flew the balloon, Desiree had asked her mother, “Do you think Daddy has my balloon yet?” Several weeks passed, and she stopped asking.

9 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Several years ago, I was living in New York and working for an airline, so I never got back home for Christmas. My Christmas was happy too with some other colleagues around. But in my heart, I was sad because I couldn’t stay with my family. Sometimes my colleagues would say our Christmas was filled with tears. But this Christmas was different. I was lucky. I had the whole day off, which meant I could stay with my family on Christmas Eve.

When Christmas miming came, I awoke to a small hand rubbing my face. “Dad. Merry Christmas!” was all my younger son had time to say. He seemed to be racing against time. I knew he was hunting for gifts with his brother eagerly. I got downstairs just to see the two little boys’ faces as they looked at the pocket rockets Santa Claus had left them. I realized that the real Christmas was for the children who had deep belief in the amazing power of Santa Claus. At first, their fingers went almost shyly over their toys. When their inspection (检查) had been completed, the two boys ensured that the gifts were really delivered by Santa Claus and they dragged everything into the center of the living room.

Delight flooded the room. As their mother began giving out gins, I smiled to myself, wondering how my unexpected gifts this year would be received. With so many Christmas spent outside, I had prepared so many gifts for my children and together with my wife I hid them in several secret places. But the children were excellent detectives and they found all of them. They were happily opening packages constantly thanking considerate Santa Claus for his kindness and ability to know their desires. But had not received a single one. I knew they had forgotten my existence with my absence from their Christmas these years.
