1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。

When I lived in Portland, Oregon, I taught English as a Second Language at a local community college. I had adult students in my class from Vietnam, Mexico, Russia and many other countries. Although they came from many lands, fighting for a better life, they had one thing in common: a desperate yearning(渴望) to learn English well.

Many of the students worked in a factory for twelve hours throughout the night and hurriedly took a bus in the morning straight to our 8:00A. M. class. They attended my class on time whatever the weather. And they waited until after class to go home and sleep. Sometimes I would see them struggling to keep their eyes open in the beginning. However, their active participation in class drove away their physical tiredness as well as livened up the atmosphere. Some students even raised a bunch of questions by gesture after class. They were always there working hard, earnest and eager to learn.

Despite their lack of sleep and long hours at work, the level of attendance and attentiveness in class was always excellent. No one called in sick. No one was absent-minded. Some of the students had as many as three jobs and took the bus everywhere they went because they couldn’t afford cars.

To teach the course, I needed to use a lot of pictures and hand gestures, since I didn’t know all their respective languages. One of the things I taught was a simple dialogue called “Shopping for a New Coat”. They enjoyed standing up and acting out the gestures that accompanied the text of the story.

Sometimes I wondered if I was really teaching my students in the best way possible. But I gave my all to this class, and they gave their all to me. If nothing else, they would always remember what to say if they ever went “shopping for a new coat”. Soon, the language course came to an end.

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

There once was a little village situated in the rich area of New Delhi, Just beyond the village lay a pond, which was a deep dark blue in the middle. Beautiful plants grew all over it. All the children in the village loved the pond. They frequently came to swim and play with water in it. During the summers, the cool water would refresh them from all the dust and heat, and even prevent them from getting immersed (沉溺于) in social networking apps like We Chat or Whats App.“It’s so nice and beautiful,” they would all say.

Then, one day, the villagers began to send the water from the pond into small channels leading to the nearby fields. These channels looked like tiny streams, and they called them irrigation (灌溉) channels, saying that it would help the growth of the plants in their fields to become taller and greener. After some time, the plants did grow taller and stronger. However, the pond was no longer as deep as before; it became shallow.

Sometime later, a factory appeared near the village, letting out a lot of thick black smelly smoke and released (排放) many chemicals into the pond. As these chemicals traveled from the pond through the channels to the fields, many plants died. The pond turned black and produced an awful smell, causing the children to lose their desire to get close to it anymore. They couldn’t even think of splashing water and playing in it as they used to. “It is so dirty. How can we play in it?” they said. Then came the burning hot summer. The pond dried up entirely, without a single drop of water remaining. The beautiful plants surrounding it died too. The once lively village now looked ugly, its beauty lost forever, leaving only memories of what once was.

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头续写两段,使之构成一个完整的短文。

Li counted his gifts one more time as he put a robot-shaped eraser into each envelope. “Twenty, twenty-one, twenty-two.”

“Do you have one for everyone in your class?” Mom asked.

“Yep! And one for Ms. Zhang,” Li said. “I’m ready for the party tomorrow!”

When Li got to school the next day, he saw a new girl in his classroom. She stood near Ms. Zhang and looked around shyly. “This is Fan,” said Ms. Zhang. “Will someone volunteer to show her around today?” Li raised his hand. He liked showing the new kids around and helping them feel welcome.

“Thanks, Li,” Ms. Zhang said. “Now let’s get busy with our work so we’re done in time for the party.” That’s when Li realized he didn’t have a gift for Fan. No one else would have one either. Li pictured his classmates’ desks covered with gifts while Fan’s desk was empty. He had butterflies in his stomach.

At break, he was careful not to mention the party as he showed Fan around the playground. At lunchtime, he walked Fan to the lunchroom, still worried about what would happen at the party. Fan had brought a packed lunch, so Li showed her where she was supposed to sit and introduced her to some of the kids at her table. Li picked up a big plate and joined the rest of his classmates in the lunch line. It was “breakfast for lunch” day, his favorite. As the lunch server placed a heart-shaped cookie on Li’s plate, Li suddenly remembered that kids often included candy hearts or other treats with the gifts they exchanged. This won’t be a happy Children’s Day for Fan with no gifts or treats, he felt upset.

4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

“I’m going to drive for Uber!” my mom said. Her smile was practically wrapped around her head.

“Oh… you mean to be a driver?”

I was confused. My mother was great at making sales and packing snacks. But driving competently and using technology are different.

I was half-expecting her to abandon this idea before it fully spread its wings. But then she asked me to help her download the app. Mom had sworn me to secrecy because she thought my dad and sister would judge her. She was probably right. Under the cover of midday, while the rest of the family worked, we downloaded the app and watched the training videos.

We practised driving on Tuesday morning. I ordered the ride to our house while we sat in the car one block away. It did not go smoothly. The navigation system was too quiet. The screen was distracting. The GPS didn’t know the best route. It was confusing. It was stressful. The ride ended in tears. “Don’t worry,” I said. “We can try again tomorrow.”

One hour later, Mom decided that she alone was ready for the road.

On her way home from grocery shopping, she turned on the app, which matched her quickly with the first passenger named Matthew. As she made her way toward him, the panic from the morning appeared. The silent navigation. The screen confusion. It was just too much.

Naturally, she turned off her phone. She did not cancel the ride service. She did not contact him to explain. A few minutes later, Mom turned on her phone to check if it worked well. She had several missed calls from Matthew, who had been watching her on his screen and seen her drive in the opposite direction for the past five minutes.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

After getting up late on a sleepy Sunday, I saw my dad at the kitchen table reading the Sunday edition of the local newspaper. I made a sandwich and sat down next to him, asking him what was new. He turned sadly to me and said that the municipal council (市政委员会) was planning to introduce a measure to pull down the community garden nearby. He mentioned that he used to work on it with his dad, so the place had some fond childhood memories for him.

He then put down the paper, walked over to the closet and-after a bit of searching-pulled out a thick, black binder (活页夹). Inside, there was a whole bunch of old photographs. After thumbing through a few pages, my dad found the one of him and his dad together at the community garden, just like he’d said. “Wow, your cheeks were super rosy back then!” I said, surprised.

With nothing planned for the afternoon, my dad and I decided to take a trip over to the community garden to see how it was doing these days. Not great, as it turned out. Crumpled (皱巴巴的) soda cans, cigarette butts (烟头) and other trash were everywhere. Pots of soil were still there, but what few plants remained were either dead or dying.

We looked at each other and knew what we had to do. After gathering some tools and garbage bags, we went straight to work cleaning up the place. I phoned up some of my school friends and, soon enough, a half-dozen people were collecting trash bags and sweeping paths. Someone had even brought bags of fresh seeds and soil along with new flowers, so we uprooted the old dead plants and flowers and planted anew.

After only a few hours, the community garden looked totally changed. Despite our hard work, there was still the matter of the upcoming council vote. We created a plan: take photos of the garden and spread the news about the vote. Using the photographs, we would then collect signatures (签名) to show continued local interest and then present these to the council.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。

After two weeks of photo-taking and signature-collecting, it was time to present at the local council meeting.

I was surprised to find that the busy traffic lines outside Layla’s primary school had remarkably disappeared—I easily found a parking space and, for once, I was on time. The school bell rang, and a group of children merrily made their way through the gate. However, something was different—the children were all squeezing (挤进) into cars in groups of three or four.

Before I could ask my daughter Layla, Mr. Trent, the head teacher, approached me. “Mrs. Pavis, didn’t you see our letter?” Letter? What letter? I had a habit of not paying attention to them and, in most cases, not reading them. “The letter? Of course. I didn’t notice that. I’ve been away for work.”

Now, at home, I examined through Layla’s messy school bag. Eventually, I found several letters, all about the problem of parking outside the school gates. Obviously, due to some parents parking improperly, the police were about to step in. “Why didn’t you give me these letters?” I demanded. Layla raised her shoulders. “I forgot.” I was about to give her a lecture when it occurred to me that I had always forgotten—I had forgotten to give Layla her money for the cooking class that morning and forgotten to hang out the kids’ washed clothes.

I calmed down and realized that they wanted parents to carpool (拼车). Over the next half hour, I called the parents of Layla’s friends, asking if they would like to carpool with us. Unfortunately, they had already made arrangements. It was my own fault—I should have read those letters long ago. “Um... I overheard others talking about it,” Layla said, “They said they didn’t know who would carpool with us because we’re always late.” I suddenly felt sorry. We were a disorganized family.

8 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写一段话。

It was the day of the big cross-country run. Students from seven different primary schools in and around the small town were warming up and walking the route (路线) through thick evergreen forest.

I looked around and finally spotted David, who was standing by himself off to the side by a fence. He was small for ten years old. His usual big toothy smile was absent today. I walked over and asked him why he wasn't with the other children. He hesitated and then said he had decided not to run.

What was wrong? He had worked so hard for this event!

I quickly searched the crowd for the school's coach and asked him what had happened. “I was afraid that kids from other schools would laugh at him,” he explained uncomfortably. “I gave him the choice to run or not, and let him decide.”

I bit back my frustration (懊恼). I knew the coach meant well—he thought he was doing the right thing. After making sure that David could run if he wanted, I turned to find him coming towards me, his small body rocking from side to side as he swung his feet forward.

David had a brain disease which prevented him from walking or running like other children, but at school his classmates thought of him as a regular kid. He always participated to the best of his ability in whatever they were doing. That was why non e of the children thought it unusual that David had decided to join the cross-country team. It just took him longer—that’s all. David had not missed a single practice, and although he always finished his run long after the other children, he did always finish. As a special education teacher at the School, I was familiar with the challenges David faced and was proud of his strong determination.

We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn't look at me. He hung his head, trying to avoid eye contact with me. It was a tricky moment, calling for a good choice of words. Having thought it over, I mentioned some events which won people's praise for his determination and perseverance. His face began to lighten. He added that even the judges thumbed up at him. The whistle went off and the competitors began to take their places. To my joy, David slowly rose to his feet.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为100左右;
2. 请按如下格式作答。

I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners.

As the bell was about to ring, our teacher announced a special assignment for next Monday: to share our gratitude for someone instead of giving a daily report. Hearing this, anxiety crawled over my body as the last thing I would do was speaking in front of the entire class! I couldn’t help complaining to my best friend Jenny.

“You are the chief violinist in our school orchestra (管弦乐队), aren’t you?” she said. “So what’s the point of being afraid of speaking to our own classmates since you can handle acting in front of a large audience?”

Her point made sense, but being in a performance meant being part of a team. I shook my head. Besides, there were so many people I was grateful to, and choosing just one seemed difficult. Even if I could pick someone, I wouldn’t know how to say “thank you”. And even if I figured out what to say, I was sure I’d stumble (结巴地说) on my words when speaking aloud! Standing there, with everyone’s eyes on me, I would feel the spotlight was wholly on me, and there would be no place for me to hide! “Oh no!” I covered my face with my hands and said, “I can’t do it, just can’t!” Real friends, the ones who know you well, don’t just do exactly what you ask. Jenny, always supportive and helpful, wrote something on a piece of paper and gently removed my hands from my face. She had drawn a cute cat with the word “CALM” written below it.

“Nice meeting you; I am the ‘everything will be fine’ cat,” Jenny laughed and sounded exactly like a cat. Pretending to listen to the cat, she asked, “Well, kitty, you think my friend should come to my house tomorrow, so we can prepare our speeches together.” I laughed out loud and relaxed a lot. I have to say Jenny was there for me, always!

The next day, I went to Jenny’s house. She suggested I talk about my mom, helping me patiently organize my thoughts into reasonable and heartfelt sentences. After that, we too k turns to rehearse (排练) our speeches to polish the expressions. By the end of the day, I felt more prepared and confident for Monday’s work.

注意:
1.续写词数应为80左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Before the speech, however, I changed my mind and wrote “Jenny” on the blackboard.

Jennifer, a 39-year-old single mother, began the day by sending her child, Hill, to school. Having no idea what would happen, Jennifer was filled with anxiety. After all, it was the first day of a new school year for Hill, a fresh start! On the way to school, she repeatedly reminded Hill to solve problems positively and fit in. Though worried. Jennifer had to wave goodbye to her daughter, watching her towards the school gate.

The whole day was packed with housework. Jennifer tidied the house, washed clothes, and prepared for the evening meal. As the school bell rang, signaling the end of the day, Jennifer picked Hill up from school. On seeing Jennifer, Hill couldn’t wait to hug her, sharing the school experiences. Chatting and laughing accompanied them all the way. Hill’s innocent laughter was like Jennifer’s ray of sunshine.

Approaching home, they encountered Mrs. Smith, a most kind and thoughtful housewife living in their neighborhood for many years. Mrs. Smith often invited Jennifer and Hill to her home and shared her homemade desserts and cookies. The two families developed a close relationship and Hill liked to stay with Mrs. Smith, who always brightened her days with willingness and timely help. After exchanging greetings, they went back to their own homes:

On arriving home, Jennifer set out to prepare dinner. As the sun began to set, the house was full of a pleasant smell of cooking food.
