1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

On a yearly basis, funded by Mr. Alden, a Field Day was held in the town of Silver City. Every year the boys were in training for the races. And not only adults but boys and girls trained hard for Field Day.

There were prizes for all kinds of races — running and swimming and jumping. But the best one was a foot race, called a free-for-all, because anyone could run in it. Mr. Alden gave a prize of twenty-five dollars and medals to the winners. Sometimes a boy won the championship. Sometimes a girl. Once a fat man had won it.

On Field Day, Mike was cutting the grass for Mr. Moore in the neighborhood to earn his living expenses. Suddenly Mr. Moore stopped his car in the street and called to Mike. “Hop in,” he said. “Today is Field Day, and I want you to see the races.” Soon Mike found himself sitting on the bleachers (露天看台). By and by, a small boy climbed up the bleachers and sat beside him.

Then a man called, “Free-for-all! Come and get ready!”

Being a newcomer, Mike didn’t know what a free-for-all was. The boy next to him explained to him and pointed at the winner of last year’s race. Obviously, he was smaller than Mike, but he was older. Suddenly, Mike stood up and quietly left the bleachers. He went to the room where the boys were getting ready for the race.

“Do you want to run in the race?” a man asked him.

“Yes, I do,” replied Mike.

The man gave him some track clothes with the number 4 on the front and back.

“Where did you train?” he asked.

“I never was trained,” said Mike.

“These boys have been training all year,” remarked the man.

“Oh, I don’t think I’ll win,” responded Mike. “But I am keen to run. It’s my passion and it’s lots of fun.”

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

For nearly 20 years, natural disasters yearly affected about 300 million people and destroyed more than 3 million buildings, causing great damage to China’s economy. Therefore, the disaster prevention and reduction is an important issue for China. To save lives and reduce losses, the Chinese government has taken the following effective measures.

As an important part, the management on disaster information has been strengthened. So far, China has realized the 24-hour monitoring (监控) of disasters all over the country and established an early warning system. These are particularly important to save lives, especially in the case of an earthquake. According to Chengdu High-tech Disaster Reduction Institute, even a three-second early warning can reduce deaths and injuries by 14 percent.

Besides, the Chinese government has been raising the public’s awareness of disaster prevention and reduction in an all-round way. Disaster-related knowledge has been included in school textbooks, and general education about disaster prevention and reduction has been given to the public. For example, in the wake of Wenchuan earthquake, the Chinese government decided to make May 12th “Disaster Prevention and Reduction Day”. Every year, a series of publicity activities is organized with rich content and different forms.

Apart from that, the Chinese government has improved social disaster relief system. Concerning relief efforts, the Chinese government has set up a social donation system. This encourages all industries of society to make donations. In addition, related volunteer service has been developed. Under the guidance of the Chinese government, non-governmental organizations, volunteers and social workers all actively join in the cause. They cooperate well with the government in rescue work, such as medical work and supply delivery.

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Maddy and I have been friends since we were babies. The daycare we went to divided kids into groups according to age, and we were together before we could talk.

A year ago, Maddy’s family moved two hours away, and for months I begged my parents to take me for a visit. Finally, last week, my dad had to drive to a meeting in that direction, so we arranged that I’d spend the weekend at Maddy’s.

Maddy and I were so excited and we had three different phone conversations planning the awesome stuff we’d do during our time together, like bike riding and favorite song singing. I even made an official document (文档) titled “Maddy and Angel’s Fun List” to make sure we’d fit in all the fun we could during my visit. I particularly missed the time when we made cookies together.

But plans don’t always work out as expected.

The day I visited Maddy, she greeted me with a hug and said, “Come on. You’re just in time.”

“In time for what?” I asked. “The Cookie Club.” Maddy said and pulled me into her living room. She told me it was the best TV show ever invented and there was a special show going to be on all day long.

“Cool.” I replied, “But we’re not actually going to watch it all day long, right?”

“Of course not,” Maddy took the control and sat on the sofa. “But you have to watch one and see how great it is.”

The first thing I learned about The Cookie Club was that it’s about three kids who happen to live where strange goings-on are always going on. It combines mysteries and cookies-two things fairly impossible not to love. The second thing was that it would attract you to watch more and more episodes (集). You were so busy solving the delicious mystery and forget about anything except the one on the screen. The first day was over, but we didn’t manage to do a single thing on our Fun List.

4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Jane and I were college roommates, and our first meet was far from friendly. I, an outgoing and passionate girl, found Jane, a quiet and shy person, difficult to get along with. Our conflicting lifestyles became a headache for both of us. Jane enjoyed early mornings at the library, absorbed in reading, while I preferred my sleep-ins. The sound of her early morning routine, from washing up to organizing the room, really got on my nerves. Jane would actively tidy up our shared space after study, while my desk remained in constant disorder.

One morning, I was unexpectedly awakened by a loud crash, only to discover that Jane had accidentally broken my favorite cup. Imagining all the disagreements, I was getting mad. I lost my temper and yelled a bunch of angry words at her without thinking. “What on earth, Jane! That was my favorite cup!” “I’m so sorry! I’ll clean it up.” “Clean it up? You’ve got to be kidding me!” After my outburst, Jane’s eyes welled up with tears. Silently, she began to clean up the broken pieces before leaving the room with her bag.

That night, as the bell signaling the end of study hours rang, I returned to the room only to find it empty. The roommate, who usually hangs around the room, was nowhere to be seen. It felt a little strange like something wasn’t right. I thought maybe she was still upset about our argument in the morning. I started worrying. Did what I said hurt her feelings? Is she avoiding me now? I kept thinking about our argument. It was then that I noticed the cleanliness Jane had left behind — a dorm so clean you could eat off the floor. I was filled with regret as I became aware of the consequences of my morning outburst. I didn’t want to ruin our friendship. Feeling bad and wanting to fix things, I decided to go to find her.

Though I cat an apple almost every day, one month ago my doctor came to my house standing in front of me, not being kept away, due to my sudden illness.

“Well Jian, I think I need to have a strong talk with you. You are overweight. Have you ever heard about Body Mass Index (指数), BMI? Well, I’ve weighed you and measured your height and you have a BMI of 28. That is obese (肥胖的),” said the doctor.

I knew I was a little bit overweight but I didn’t think it was that bad. He added that my name means healthy in Chinese and he thought it is time that I should become healthy. There is a direct link between my health and sport. So he asked me, “How much sport do you do every week?”

I told him that I go for a walk every weekend. Then he replied, “Hmm, that’s not a lot. Sport and health go together. They affect your mental, physical and emotional health. For example, sport can improve your mental health, allowing your brain to think better and focus. It will help you to learn more easily. Is that clear, Jian?”

“I think so. I know it would be good to be able to concentrate better at school.” I said.

The doctor explained to me that from a physical point of view, sport makes us tired so helps us to sleep better. At the same time, sport bums off the calories that we have consumed. It builds muscle and improves our circulation. Sport helps to control our cholesterol count (胆固醇指标) and this is important to stop us having a heart attack. Additionally, it also keeps our blood pressure normal and strengthens our bones.

Para 1: The doctor’s words left me lost in thought.

7 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was my tenth birthday—double digits—which would be a big day for me, and I would have the biggest party ever. The guest list, which I kept at the back of my homework assignment folder, began with a few close friends. But in the two weeks before that special Friday night, it had quickly grown from seven girls to a large total of seventeen. Nearly every girl in my fifth-grade class had been invited to sleep over at my house for a big celebration. I was especially happy when each guest I invited excitedly accepted the invitation. I couldn’t wait! It would be a night of scary stories, funny games, pizza and lots of presents, which would be a happy paradise (天堂) for kids. Who could resist it?

But as I later realized, I would truly treasure only one gift I received that night.

The big night finally came. Every friend invited came to my house on time. We kept dancing, singing, talking loudly and playing all pop games. As you could imagine, my family room was full of crazy shouts and bursts of laughter. We had just finished a game of Twister and were lining up for the limbo (林波舞)when the doorbell rang suddenly. I hardly paid attention to who might be at the door. What did it matter? Who cared? Everyone I liked from school was there, in my family room, preparing for the game —to lean under the stick held by my two sisters.

“Judy, come here for a minute,” Mom answered the door and called loudly from the front door.

I hated to be interrupted. I rolled my eyes and shrugged to my friends as if to say, “Now who would dare bother me at a time like this?” What I really wanted to say was, “It’s tough being popular!”

8 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

One sunny morning, the sun began to rise, casting a warm golden glow over the park. Two young men named Tom and Jerry, who was lost in their own books, found themselves siting on opposite ends of a bench. The air was filled with the sweet scent of blooming flowers and the distant sound of children playing. Their eyes met for a brief moment before they both bent down to pick up their pens. It seemed as if they had known before. They quickly became friends and then began to spend many happy times together. They played basketball, watched movies, and spent many unforgettable days together. However, as time went on, their lives changed, and their friendship was put to the test.

A few years later, Tom became a successful lawyer, while Jerry chose a different path and became an artist. Despite different kinds of changes in their lifestyles, they still kept in touch and would gather together every once in a while to recall the good old days.

One day, Tom received a letter from Jerry. The letter said, “Dear Tom, I hope you can come and visit my art exhibition. I know you may not be interested in art, but I think you will like these works. They are all paintings I made during the days we spent together. I hope you can feel the friendship between us.”

After reading the letter, Tom immediately decided to attend Jerry’s art exhibition. He bought a bunch of flowers as a gift and arrived at the exhibition site. When he walked into the exhibition hall, he was shocked by what he saw. The walls were filled with Jerry’s works, each painting full of life and emotion. He saw scenes of them playing basketball in the park, watching movies together, and walking in the rain. These paintings made him feel the deep friendship between them.

Listening to Be Heard

Our P. E. teacher Ms. Lopez had been out with a skiing injury. She was a caring and considerate teacher who showed patience and understanding to little minds like us. So, when we knew she was returning, some of us asked our substitute(替代) gym teacher if we could plan a welcome-back party.

“Sounds great,” said Ms. Green, “We have a few minutes before the bell rings, so you can do a little brainstorming while I put some stuff away.” We were excited and could not wait to let our minds wander. But here came the problem.

“I bet Ms. Lopez would like welcome-back cards.” I said.

“We should have a rock ‘n’ roll theme!” said Noah.

“No, we should make it a soccer theme! What about a cake shaped like a soccer ball!”said Avery.

“Why is soccer better than music?” said Noah.

“I think cards are really important!” I said, louder.

The discussion soon turned into a noisy chaos (混乱). Everyone had their ideas to present and wished them to be realized. Even the “fashionable” kids interrupted, demanding to bring balloons and some fancy clothes like a skirt with orange flowers. It seemed all voices were ignored.

That was when the bell rang and the party discussion ended. I was in confusion and fear for the rest of the day. It was going to be a disaster, and Ms. Lopez wouldn’t even know we missed her.

When I returned home, my little brother and sister were arguing about a board game.

“I know the rules!” Tex shouted. “You don’t have to start over if you land on blue!”

“I know the rules!” shouted Indi. “You get an extra point if you get the flowers!”

I walked over to where they were playing and said, “If you’d stop and listen to each other, you might realize you’re both right.” I pointed to the rule sheet and read them the parts they’d been arguing about. They were surprised that they were both right. Suddenly it clicked—we had been busy presenting our ideas without listening to others.

10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

One morning, John Evans entered my life. He was a newcomer, whose parents had recently arrived in our town for seasonal apple picking. In worn-out clothes, he stood in front of our class, shifting from foot to foot. As our teacher, Mrs. Parmele, penned his name in the roll book, whispers of disapproval began floating from row to row.

Mrs. Parmele looked up at us and the whispering stopped. “Class, this is John Evans,” Mrs. Parmele announced, trying to sound friendly. John looked around and smiled, expecting somebody would smile back. Nobody did. I held my breath, hoping Mrs. Parmele wouldn’t notice the empty desk next to mine. She did and pointed him in that direction. He smiled at me as he slid into the seat, but I turned my eyes away.

A week passing by, John still had no friend. “It’s his fault,” I told my mother one night. “He barely even knows how to count.” My mother had grown to know John through my nightly comments. She always listened patiently and sometimes nodded thoughtfully.

Another day at lunchtime, “Can I sit by you?” John stood by me, plate in hand and smile on face. I looked around and agreed a bit unwillingly. As I watched him eat and listened to him chat, it dawned on me that he was actually pleasant to be around. And I was determined John would remain friendless no longer.

One evening, when Mother kissed me good night, I uttered, “Mom, tomorrow is John’s birthday. He’s not going to get anything. No cake. No presents. Nobody even cares.” Mother and I both knew whenever a kid had a birthday, his mother would bring cupcakes for the class. But John’s mother worked all day. His special day would go unnoticed! “Don’t worry,” Mom said, “I’m sure everything will turn out fine.”

The next day, I wished John a happy birthday first thing in the morning, and his embarrassed smile showed me he was glad I had remembered. Till the last class, nothing special happened.
