1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

When Evan was 13, he wanted to have a dog. His mom Octavia refused since raising a dog would need lots of attention and care.

The boy once joined the Forest Exploration club of his school where Octavia taught. And the mother was in charge of the club. One morning, guided by Octavia, Evan and his schoolmates went hiking in a forest. During the hike, some purple flowers caught Evan’s eye. Evan thought those beautiful flowers could surely impress his mother. So he walked to the riverside secretly to pick those flowers. Unfortunately, Evan got separated from the group and got lost.

He anxiously kept walking, hoping he could catch up with the group. Suddenly, a dog appeared. At first, Evan thought it might be a wolf, so he tensed and stood there still. When the dog got closer, he saw its tail wagging (摇摆) gently.

“Oh, buddy. You scared me,” he said, petting the dog. “You must be a stray (走失的) dog, huh?” The dog looked at him with the most sincere expression. Evan wanted to find his way home, not only for himself but also for the animal. Therefore, he walked again. The moment Octavia realized Evan was gone, she and others began looking for Evan desperately, but in vain.

It was getting darker and colder. Evan discovered a cave. He went inside and made a fire to keep warm. He knew his mom and other schoolmates must have been searching the forest for him. “Buddy, let’s wait here and see if we can hear my group calling,” Evan told the dog. And they sat near each other. Before long, Evan fell asleep.

At some point, he heard the sound of animal growling (低声吼叫) and noticed the dog at the entrance of their shelter. The dog was growling at something that Evan couldn’t see well. But there was another animal growling back. Evan wiped his eyes and tried to see what made the dog so alert and angry. He then saw a big fox, and said to himself, “Thank goodness! I’m not alone!” But he was still frightened. The fox moved forward, wanting to attack Evan.

Since the age of seven, I had always dreamed of being one of the student leaders who we looked up to. They took responsibility for us, gave instructions, organized school activities, and proudly wore their badges while carrying our school flag and walking on the playground. They represented us and gave speeches on school issues, becoming our role models.

As I grew older, I became qualified to participate in the school elections. I prepared my election speech and on the day of the speeches, everyone balloted(不记名投票).I was hopeful and prayed for a victory. However, the following morning when we gathered on the school grounds for the principal’s declaration of the outcome, reality hit me hard. I realized that I had no chance of winning-I was neither well known nor too pretty. Like many preteens facing rejection, I became depressed and felt as though I had no friends supporting me.

Later that day, as I cried in my room, I took a deep breath and decided to change my mindset. I refused to see myself as a failure and made a determination to run for the school elections again the following year-this time, with a plan to win. I sat down at my study table and wrote down my thoughts.

Comparing myself with other competitors, I figured out that I had a lot to improve. With a whole year ahead, I began to play my election strategies.

To gain recognition and demonstrate my ability to represent my fellow students, I started making new friends and helping them in various ways at school. Additionally, I attended a public speaking course to learn how to deliver a great election speech. By the time the election came around, I was well-prepared, and I delivered a passionate speech on the stage.

The Mango Tree—A Friend of All

It was a usual cheerful and playful day for Dorothy. The only difference was that her family had shifted to a new apartment. Although she had been in the new house just two days, Dorothy had already started liking her new home very much, not only because of the spacious rooms, but also because of a large mango tree which had lovingly extended its branches across the balcony of her house. The mango tree not only gave a beautiful view but also served as a home for a large number of birds and small animals. Dorothy’s mother was also fond of plants and had kept many potted plants in the balcony.

A week passed by. On a Sunday morning, Dorothy was awakened by a loud noise in her neighbourhood. She ran towards the balcony and, to her surprise, found some people chopping (砍) off the beloved mango tree. She ran up to her mother and explained the matter.

Dorothy and her mother looked down from the balcony. They saw the women under the guidance of Mr. Denver, cutting the mango tree down. Mr. Denver was the resident of the ground floor apartment. He said angrily, “Look, I am getting this job done under my expense. This tree is blocking my view. I cannot see my car properly because of this annoying tree.” Dorothy and her mother understood that there was no point in having an argument with Mr. Denver.

From then on, Dorothy tried all possible ways to take her revenge (报复) against Mr. Denver for cutting her beloved mango tree. She did many tricks such as sticking the gum on his call ng bell, pouring sugar in his balcony to attractants, jumping on the floor to create noise, etc.

Days passed by. One morning, as Dorothy was helping her mother water the potted plants kept in the balcony, she couldn’t take here yes away from the fresh green leaves coming from the injured mango tree. Dorothy couldn’t hold her excitement and started jumping with delight.

It was a beautiful day outside. The sky was a pale blue and the clouds were big and fluffy which made me delighted. I decided to take a walk in the park and enjoy the lovely weather. As I was walking, I saw a little girl sitting on a bench, looking sad and lonely. I approached her and asked if she was okay. She looked up at me with big, round eyes filled with tears and shook her head.

I sat down next to her and asked her what was wrong. She said that she had lost her doll and couldn’t find it anywhere. I offered to help her look for it and we searched the park together. We looked in every nook and cranny, behind trees and bushes, but couldn’t find the doll. We all felt frustrated and depressed. Just when we were about to give up, I saw a glimmer of pink behind a park bench. I picked up the doll and handed it to the little girl.

She was so grateful and gave me a big, warm hug. She told me that her doll was very special to her because the gift was given by her best friend who had gone abroad and she missed the best friend very much. She couldn’t thank me enough for helping her find it. As we walked back to her house, the little girl told me that she was new to the area and didn’t have any friends yet. She always felt lonely and sad and didn’t want to go to school. I comforted her and promised to come back and visit her again, and we exchanged phone numbers.

An unexpected change on the road

It was a damp evening in September 2013 when I landed in Kuching, the capital city of Sarawak in Malaysia. I was a 19-year-old Dubai-raised kid away from home for the first time to start my undergraduate studies in mechanical engineering.

Alone and homesick, the wet welcome I received at the airport didn’t make me feel any better. I had never travelled alone before and the seven-hour flight from Dubai was the longest flight I had ever taken. I pushed my luggage and headed to the airport exit to find a grey van with the name of my university on it. My ride, I assumed, and I was right.

As we left the airport, the driver began talking to me; he told me that I was the last of the new students he had to pick up that day. He shared information with me about the city and its people and what I should see and do. As I am a driving enthusiast myself, we started talking about cars and driving in Dubai and his accounts of driving in Kuching.

“Never make a Sarawakian angry” he warned. “No road rage (路怒). Very dangerous!” He then went on to list his experiences of road rage and by the time he had finished, I had made up my mind to be very passive on the roads.

Not long into our journey, the lights of the car behind flashed at us. This continued more aggressively and my driver started to panic. We pulled over to the roadside in a well-lit area. My heart was pounding but I tried to put on a brave face as the man from the car emerged and made his way to my side of the van. As he reached my window, I lowered it and tried to force a smile. He reached into the van and I let out a loud “Whoa (used to tell someone to become calmer)!”

It was a typical Monday morning for Jenny, a diligent high school senior. The sound of her alarm clock woke her up, a rude awakening from her sweet dreams. She unwillingly opened her eyes, knowing what waited for her-another 5 long days at school.

Dragging herself out of bed, Jenny went through her usual morning routine. She hurriedly got dressed, grabbed her backpack, and rushed to the kitchen for breakfast. Her mother had prepared a nutritious meal, but Jenny had no appetite. She was too occupied with thoughts of an upcoming exam in her most challenging subject, mathematics.

As Jenny walked to school, her mind wandered back to the countless hours she had spent studying and practicing equations (方程式). She had put in lots of effort, hoping to improve her grades. However, despite her dedication, she was struggling to achieve the desired results. Doubts started crawling in, and anxiety stayed in her mind like dark clouds.

As students settled into their seats, Mr. Johnson, their math teacher, announced that the exam would take place that afternoon. Jenny started to feel afraid. She suddenly realized that she had forgotten her calculator at home, an essential tool for the exam. Panic turned into hopelessness, as she knew that borrowing one during the test would be strictly prohibited.

Jenny’s friends, Emma and David, noticed her worry and approached her after class. They offered their help. Emma suggested that Jenny be honest to Mr. Johnson and explain her situation. David, however, had a different plan. He proposed sneaking (偷偷给) his calculator to her during the exam, risking punishment for cheating.

Oh, Brother!

A few months ago, my mom got remarried, making Drew my stepbrother. She hoped we’d get along. But he was like a headache I couldn’t get rid of. Mom thought inviting Kendall, my best friend, for a sleepover would take my mind off Drew. So far, that wasn’t working.

Later in my room, Kendall and I were doing our nails when Drew came in, with a bowl of popcorn in his hands. “Does anyone want popcorn?” asked Drew.

“Mom doesn’t like food in here, and you got into my room without asking!” I said angrily. “Time to leave, Drew,” I pointed to the door.

I decided an ice cream would cool me down. In the kitchen, Kendall and I had hardly started eating when I heard Drew hurrying down the stairs. “Hey, who wants to have a pillow fight?” he asked.

“I do!“ cried Kendall, sticking her ice cream in the freezer. She and Drew ran upstairs, leaving me alone with my bad attitude.

I wasn’t about to follow them like a puppy. There was something I had to do. I took the cream and slipped into Drew’s room. I found his slippers, and stuck the cream inside them. Satisfied, I grabbed a pillow, ready to fight him.

I ran into my room and hit Drew with the pillow. He countered with a blow to my legs. Kendall threw her pillow into his side. Before long, we were all laughing. I lifted my pillow over my head to give Drew a final blow. But I missed. It crashed into the popcorn bowl left on the dresser. The corns rained everywhere just as mom walked into the room.“Stop! You kids are being too wild,” she cried. “And, Sarah, you know I don’t like food in here.”

8 . 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Lily was renowned for her desire to achieve perfection in everything she undertook. Whether it was school projects, art assignments, or even helping her parents with household chores, Lily’s commitment to excellence was unwavering.

One sunny summer day, Lily’s family decided to spend a day at the beach. As they arrived, Lily’s eyes were immediately drawn by a group of children who playfully built and then tore down their sandcastles. They giggled and shouted, their excitement on full display. “How silly, ” she thought, not quite getting why they enjoyed doing that.

Lily, being herself, decided to build a perfect sandcastle that would become the envy of all beachgoers. She began to plan every detail in her mind, from the balanced structures of the towers to the delicate decorations. Then, she set about piling sand to make the towers and walls of her sandcastle. Painstakingly, she crafted each feature of her work, carefully smoothed the surfaces and adjusting every detail to her vision.

Jake, Lily’s younger brother, didn’t seem too concerned with building a fantastic sandcastle. He picked a spot nearby and amused himself with the sand. He scooped up handfuls of sand, let it slip through his fingers like grains of time, and then molded it into careless shapes with the carefree abandon of a child. Jake’s happiness was contagious. Mom and Dad joined him, laughing and joking over Jake’s playful creations. From time to time, they called out to Lily and invited her to join the fun, knowing that the pursuit of perfection could be exhausting.

Nevertheless, Lily stayed where she was, determined to create an impressive sandcastle. She frowned at Jake’s unconventional, abstract art-like sandcastle shapes and persisted in her efforts. However, the process didn’t go as smoothly as she had anticipated. The sand didn’t always hold its shape, and the waves constantly lapped at the edges of her creation.

Para 1: As the day wore on, Lily’s sandcastle kept losing its form.

Para 2: With bitter smile, Lily decided to join her family.

9 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

When I was in Primary Five, I was in the basketball school team. Every month we would have a basketball match against another school’s basketball team. In spite of all the cheers we received from our classmates and the amount of training we had, we had never won a single match before. That was due to our lack of teamwork and cooperation.

During one of our training sessions, our school team was divided into two to have a match against each other. The inter-school competition was coming up and none of us wanted to miss our chance of getting that gold trophy(奖品). “Three, two, one, start!” our basketball coach, Coach Leong, shouted. John, who was in my team, managed to grab the ball that Coach Leong threw in the air. Since John grabbed the ball, he refused to let anyone, not even his teammates, take it.

“Pass the ball to me, John!” I shouted. I was in a good position to shoot the ball into the hoop(篮筺). To my shock, John made a rude face at me. I made an attempt to grab the ball from him. When I got my hands on the ball, it became a tug-of-war(激烈竞争) between John and me. Coach Leong shook his head and exploded like an active volcano. “Children! Is this the type of behavior that I should be seeing? The match is in two weeks! Do you even know the importance of teamwork?” Coach Leong gave us a disappointed look. It seemed as if he had some sad news to tell us.

I was right.

Coach Leong explained that he would be retiring after the match. “I hope you can show me your teamwork and cooperate with one another in this match before I retire.” I choked on my tears. My heart sank. We were giving Coach Leong such a tough time, when all he wanted was for us to show teamwork in the match. After that day, my teammates and I were determined to do our best and work as a team.
