Tom worked for a company that helped people buy or sell houses. One day, he took the bus home. The bus dropped him a few blocks away from his home, so be walked the rest of the way. As he was nearing his home, he saw a man begging for money. He took out some coins to give the man. “Hey, man. How are you today?” Tom asked.
“Hello, sir. I’m doing all right, I guess,” the man replied, smiling at Tom. “I need to feed my children. This is a huge help. Thank you.” Tom wished him good luck, and went on his way. He felt great about helping out. But he hoped there was more he could do to this poor man, although he himself wasn’t rich at all.
During the following days, Tom tried to give the man some money and bring him food when he passed by him.
Actually, the man, named Adam, begged for money to feed the many homeless dogs he had brought to his home. He had a job at night at a construction site. But the money made there wasn’t enough for him to care for the dogs which he considered as his kids, so he had to beg for money. However, Tom didn’t know about it.
One day, Tom stopped at the newsstand (报摊) on the street. And the owner asked him, “Why do you always give that man money?” Tom explained that man had to feed his family. “But that man doesn’t have a family or any kids,” the owner said, not knowing the truth.
Tom angrily walked away, thinking that man lied to him. He walked to where he knew the man was begging for money and met him. “I know you don’t have children. Stop lying to people. If you need a job, I can help you. This is just wrong,” Tom said angrily. The man stood up and explained, “Sir, I’m not lying at all.” Hearing Adam’s words, Tom said, “Prove it.”

On 15 September 2016, Typhoon Meranti, stated to be the world’s strongest typhoon so far this year, made landfall in Xiang’an district of Xiamen City at 3:05 a.m. Thursday, causing widespread damage. Chinese state media reported one death and one person missing, and thousands of people were evacuated (撤离) from their homes, as high winds and rain shattered windows on tall buildings, knocked down trees and disrupted water supplies in China’s Fujian province, causing a widespread blackout in the coastal city of Xiamen.
“The winds and rain got extremely loud after 3 a.m. The cracking sound of windows and tree branches were also scary. The power went out in the shop several times,” Su Binglin, a night-shift shop assistant at a 24-hour convenient store told state-run Xinhua news agency. He said he had to use a metal plate to strengthen the shop door to prevent it from shattering. He also used boxes filled with mineral water to consolidate the plate.
At around 6 AM, the winds abated. Streets in Xiamen are scattered with glass shards, broken tree branches and blown down billboards. “It is so wretched. Many trees by road sides are fallen, and there are also blocking traffic,” Hu Rong, a delivery man said. “All the trees on both sides of the street have fallen down. You can hardly pass through. The water is very, very high. No vehicle smaller than mine could possibly pass,” said Xiamen local resident.
The Xiamen Power Supply company said the typhoon has caused severe damages to the power network in Xiamen, leading to mass blackout. The electricity supply was also disrupted in Xiamen’s outlying islands and with the typhoon further moving inland, more power outages are likely.
While the full impact of Meranti is still unknown, it’s likely much of the damage is beyond repair. Meranti will continue to lose strength as it pushes inland and up towards China’s commercial capital of Shanghai, but will bring heavy rain.

People who live in the countryside generally live longer than those who live in the city. A number of reasons may also help explain this point.
To start with, farmers are in close contact with nature. They breathe fresh air. They make friends with trees and stones, cows and dogs. They listen to the songs of birds. They fight with strong winds. This contact with nature is good for the health of both body and spirits.
Next, hard physical work keeps farmers fit and healthy. It is widely believed that farmers suffer from far less diseases than people in the city. They are many diseases that are common in the city, but not in the countryside. For example, near-sightedness is almost unknown to farmers. Besides, being free from urban pressure does good to the health of farmers.
Moreover, because there are less cars, motorcars and other kinds of vehicles in the countryside, one can walk more freely without being afraid of accidents. The environment is better in the countryside, which makes the farmers live a quiet and peaceful life.
The farmers can also get fresh grain, vegetables, fruits and milk easily. They enjoy these advantages that people living in the city cannot.

Grandma Goodie, warm-hearted and caring, goes to see her granddaughters every Sunday afternoon. Every visit starts with the same steps. First, she rings the doorbell. Then Vera and Gina run to open the door excitedly. Every time, Grandma Goodie brings wonderful gifts. Sometimes they are toys. Sometimes they are candies. After receiving the gifts, the whole room is full of the laughter and screams of the two.
One Sunday, Grandma rang the doorbell. Vera and Gina, who had been waiting since lunch, hurried down the stairs to open the door. “Darling, look what I have brought to you,” Grandma said. She pulled out a pack of cards and they couldn’t wait to rush into their room and began to play the cards cheerfully. They enjoyed themselves so much that the whole afternoon had passed before they realized it.
At the end of the day, Grandma kissed everyone and said her goodbyes. As she drove away, Vera and Gina heard their parents say that they would hold a birthday party for Grandma next Sunday. “Grandma has a birthday?” they thought, looking at each other in surprise. Both felt a little confused, “Grown-ups have birthdays?”
“We have to get her a present,” Gina decided. “But what?” asked Vera, “Grandma Goodie undoubtedly has everything!’’
They spent all week thinking, but nothing came into their mind.
On Sunday afternoon, the doorbell rang. Just as what usually happened, Grandma Goodie brought them beloved amazing gifts, which were some candies with good-looking covers. They extended their sincere gratitude to Grandma Goodie and quickly went back to their room to think about the gift for Grandma.
All through the dinner, the kids were silent. “What’s wrong with you? What makes you two so down and quiet?” asked Grandma.
“Grandma, we really wanted to give you something special for your birthday,” Gina said. “But nothing we thought of would do,” added Vera. Grandma Goodie smiled and held the kids in her arms. Then she said, “Oh, kids, don’t you know you two are the best gifts I could ever ask for?”
