A Little Boy
A little boy selling magazines for school walked up to a house that people rarely visited. The house was very old and shabby and the owner hardly ever came out. When he did come out, he would not say hello to his neighbors or passers-by but simply just glared at them.
The boy knocked on the door and waited, sweating from fear of the old man. The boy’s parents told him to stay away from the house, and a lot of other neighborhood children were told the same thing from their parents.
Dusk found the boy lingering on and hesitating what to do. As he was ready to walk away, the door slowly opened. “What do you want?” the old man said impatiently. The little boy was very afraid but he had a quota (定额) to meet for school with selling the magazines. So he got up the courage and said, “Uh, Sir, I am selling these magazines and, uh, I was wondering if you would like to buy one from me.”
The old man just stared at the boy without a word. The boy could see inside the old man’s house and saw that he had dog figurines (小雕像) on the fireplace mantle. “Do you collect dogs?” The little boy asked. “Yes, I have many collections in my house. They are my family here and they are all I have.” The boy then felt sorry for the man, as it seemed that he was a very lonely soul.
“Well, I do have a magazine here for collectors. It is perfect for you. I also have one about dogs since you like dogs so much.” The old man was ready to close the door on the boy and said, “No, boy. I don’t need any magazines of any kind, now goodbye.”
The little boy was sad that he was not going to make his quota with the sale. He was also sad for the old man being so alone in the house that he owned. The boy went home and then had an idea. He had a little dog figurine that he got some years ago from an aunt. The figurine did not mean nearly as much to him since he had a real live dog and a large family.

Her best friend, Lucy, came to invite her to participate in the competition, but Emily said, “I’m afraid to take part in it.” Her mother said, “It’s okay; just do it bravely.” Emily followed her mama’s advice and decided to give herself a try. The day came. Emily and Lucy went to the competition site. But she was too timid (胆小的)to walk onto the stage. She had been waiting until others finished singing. She shakily (颤抖地)forced herself to stand on the stage. She started to sing,but her voice was so low. What’s worse, she was so nervous that she forgot the lyrics (歌词)after singing a few words. Being laughed at by others, embarrassed and shy, she ran away from the stage.
Some naughty boys ran after her and said, “Emily, coward (胆小鬼)!Emily, coward!” Emily didn’t argue with them. What she wanted was to go back home as quickly as she could. Finally, she rushed into the house, hugged her mom and cried sadly.
“Well, my poor girl, don’t cry. Tell me what happened to you,” asked her mom. Emily looked up at her mother and told her what she had experienced.
Listening to her, her mom cupped her face and said, “It doesn’t matter, girl. As long as you practice singing more in front of strangers, you will become braver little by little. So, my girl, don’t be beaten by a failure.You can go out to practice singing every day. No matter who is listening to you, go on singing and never stop. I believe there will be a harvest for you.”

Gently, carefully, I talked over the problem with Marty. He understood what I was saying. “I know, Mom, I know, but what if it was a secret? What if they never found out who gave it?” I didn’t know how to answer him.

Shi realizes that through protecting endangered animals, like giant pandas and snow leopards, the rich biodiversity of the environment can also be maintained, which is a win-win situation.
After graduation from Sichuan Forestry School(now Sichuan Agricultural University) in 1992, Shi became a forest guardian at the Wolong National Nature Reserve.
Established in 1963, Wolong is the country’s earliest panda reserve. It experienced serious human-animal conflict, such as illegal logging and hunting before the 1990s. In 1978, an observation tent, claimed to be the country’s first field camp to study wild giant pandas, was built on a steep forested slope in the reserve.
In the early 1980s, the government cooperated with the World Wide Fund for Nature to establish the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda to save the endangered animal.
At the very beginning, it was really difficult for rangers. With no proper outdoor equipment, like protective jackets or sleeping bags, every time, going around the area could be a life-threatening adventure. Plastic woven bags were commonly used for warmth and as makeshift tents for emergency cases. For Shi, the real challenges are natural disasters, which cannot be predicted.

When young, I worked as an English teacher in a university. During the summer vacation, I was invited to be an instructor at a high school leadership camp by a college. Having been highly involved in many campus activities, I jumped at the opportunity.
About an hour into the first day of camp, immersed (沉浸于) in communications and interactions, I noticed the boy in black for the first time. Small and skinny, the boy was seated alone, staring into space and his obvious discomfort and shyness made him appear fragile. The desperate loneliness he revealed almost stopped me from approaching him, but I remembered the instructions from the senior staff- to stay alert for campers who might fall left out.
I could sense that he was in a new world, that this whole surroundings appeared foreign to him. But I somehow knew it wouldn’t be right to push him, either. That evening at our nightly staff meeting, I made my concerns about him, I explained to my fellow staff members my impression of him and asked them to pay special attention and spend time with him when they could. In the meantime, it struck me that I should do what I could to give him a hand. I argued that he needed a friend, one who could share happiness and sorrow with him. I hoped to be his friend, his real friend to help him go through the challenging period.

We were headed to the nationally famous Blue Owl Restaurant, in historic Kimmswick, Missouri, to celebrate our sixtieth anniversary. It is said that the restaurant is warm and romantic with smiling waitresses dressed in long blue dresses with white aprons. The food was delicious, and the service was extremely attentive. On Valentine’s Day, the restaurant offers a sweetheart dinner that is well worth the price. So we decided to have a try.
The weather report had forecast freezing rain, but not until long after midnight. We would be safely home by then. But then, as we approached the restaurant, there was a downpour of freezing rain. We were closer to the restaurant than home so it seemed wise to advance in that direction.
By the time we arrived, the street in front of the restaurant was a sheet of ice. The parking lot was also a sheet of ice and in front of our car was a pool of water. I couldn’t pull in the parking lot and I knew, even if I parked on the street, we would never be able to get out and walk on that ice.
My husband couldn’t walk steadily and I was not strong enough to accompany him to cross the street. I was afraid we would fall, so we were planning to give up the meal in the fancy restaurant. But we really wanted to try the special chocolate-covered strawberries that were as large as baseballs. Also, we wanted to take pictures of the two of us for our memory album.
At that moment, an unknown lady walked toward us.

Almost all of my holidays were spent with my grandpa. My grandpa was a retired army officer and the years in the army had made him a very tough person, which helped him a lot in fighting with cancer for a long time. Silver and golden stars on his shoulders and medals on his chest in grandma’s old photo albums reflected the marks of his distinguished service and numerous adventures. Grandpa had fine qualities and was a real personality. He was strict with his family, me included, as well as himself.
In our ancestral house there was a big pond as was common in bygone Bengali homes with lots of trees and bushes. Both my grandparents were fond of our so-called garden. One morning our new neighbor saw my grandpa planting two trees on both sides of our main gate, which still stand tall today. Across the street our new neighbor also got the same kind of tree and planted the trees exactly on both sides of his gate too.
My grandpa didn’t often give enough amount of water to his plants and didn’t always give his full attention to them, while our neighbor gave a lot of water to his plants and looked after them too well. My grandpa’s plants were simple but looked good. But our neighbor’s plants were much fuller and greener.
Normally, during April and May, we have short but violent thunderstorms called “Kalboishakhi”. One late evening during a Kalboishakhi we had showers with strong winds, which continued right throughout that night. Next morning along with my grandparents I came out to inspect the damage to our garden. I saw our neighbor was there in his garden too, but looked upset as his plants were uprooted. But, our plants were not damaged and were standing firm on the ground.
