1 . Many people think of guys as being carefree when it comes to their appearance. But in fact, a lot of guys spend plenty of time in front of the mirror. They care just as much as girls do about their body image.

Body image is a person's opinions and feelings about his or her own body and physical appearance.     1     You appreciate your body for its capabilities and accept its imperfections.     2     Here are some ideas.

Recognize your strengths.

Different body types are good for different things. What does your body do well? Maybe your speed, strength, or coordination makes you better than others at a certain sport. That may be basketball, table tennis, mountain biking, dancing, or even running. Or perhaps you have non-sports skills, like drawing, painting, singing, playing a musical instrument, writing, or acting.     3

Exercise regularly.

Exercise can help you look well and feel good about yourself. Good physiques(体形) don't just happen.     4     A healthy habit can be as simple as exercising 20 minutes to 1 hour three days a week. Working out can also lift your spirits.

Respect your body.

Practising good habits-regular showering; taking care of your teeth, hair, and skin; wearing clean clothes, and so on-can help you build a positive body image.

    5

Your body is just one part of who you are. Your talent for comedy, a quick wit(智慧), and all the other things make you unique. So try not to let small imperfections take over.

A.Be yourself.
B.Just explore talents that you feel good about.
C.So, what can you do to develop a positive body image?
D.Use this as an opportunity to discover what you're good at.
E.The good news is that self-image and body image can be changed.
F.They take hard work, regular workouts, and a healthy diet.
G.Having a positive body image means feeling satisfied with the way you look.

3 . In France, there once lived a man named Louis Pasteur, who was a doctor of science. The thing that concerned him most was the disease rabies (狂犬病).

“I must find the rabies germs that hide inside people and make them so sick that they die,” he thought. “Once I find them, I’ll think of a way to kill them.”

Many people thought Pasteur was wasting his time. Some laughed at him and said, “You’ll never do it.”

Pasteur didn’t care what people thought; he believed in himself. He kept right on working.

At the same time, in Germany, a boy named Joey was about to get into trouble. He was teasing a dog. But this dog was sick with rabies, which made the dog mad. Unfortunately, the dog bit him. The rabies germs were passed from the dog to Joey.

Soon the little boy was very sick. His parents could only wait. But then there was news. Joey’s mother saw it and shouted for joy. “A doctor of science has found a way to save sick people like Joey!” she said. The man, of course, was Louis Pasteur. Joey’s parents quickly prepared Joey for the long journey to Paris.

“Dr. Pasteur,” said the mother. “Our little boy is very sick. Can you help us?”

“Perhaps,” said Pasteur. “I’ve invented a vaccine (疫苗). It is strong enough to kill the rabies germs. Joey will be the first person to have my rabies vaccine.”

“The first person?” asked Joey’s worried father nervously. “Will it be dangerous? Are you sure it will work?”

“I believe it will,” said Pasteur.

Slowly the vaccine killed more and more of the rabies germs. Joey began to get well. Dr. Pasteur’s vaccine was a success!

From then on no one had to be afraid of rabies anymore, and people who had laughed at him before, respected him. He is recognized as one of the world’s greatest scientists.

4 . Taking pressure off sports competitions

Sports are a great way to have fun and stay active. Competitions can make sports more exciting. But because somebody wins and somebody loses competitions can also make kids be under pressure.     1     But too much pressure is bad news. Read on to learn more about sports pressure.

What is a competition?

There are different kinds of competition in sports.     2     For example, a swimmer might compete individually, but the person’s score may also contribute to a team’s score. What all sports competitions have in common is that all of the competitors want to win.     3

Why do I feel under pressure?

Do you ever have “butterflies” in your stomach? It’s that nervous feeling some people get when starting to attend a new school or preparing for a big soccer match. Believe it or not, the best player on your team gets nervous before a big game.     4     Feeling a little excited or nervous is OK, though. This helps your body and mind get ready to compete. But if you’re getting so nervous that you aren’t having much fun, it’s time to figure out why.

How can I deal with pressure?

When you’re competing in sports, you need a lot of energy.     5     Be sure to go to bed on time. And don’t forget to eat well on game day. Try to attend all of your team’s practices. By practicing, you’ll improve your playing skills. The more prepared you are, the better you’ll feel and the more fun you’ll have.

A.A little pressure can be OK.
B.What if you want to give up?
C.But usually only one person or team does.
D.It takes a lot of work to become skilled at a sport.
E.Even professional players feel nervous sometimes!
F.One secret to having lots of energy is to get plenty of sleep.
G.You may compete by yourself, as part of a team, or both.

6 . Some years ago, Michel-Andre found himself staring at the body of a dead whale on a beach in the Canary Islands. It was obvious that the animal had been struck violently by a ship——but why? Only later, after surveying the whales which lived in the area and measuring the increase of sound pollution from ships did it become clear that there was a link.

The whales had become desensitised to the noise of approaching boats and were being struck by them, often seriously. “We never thought that this could be something that could kill,” recalls (回忆) Andre, who is the director of the Laboratory of Applied Bioacoustics at the Technical University of Catalonia, Barcelona.

Andre has spent 20 years developing an advanced system to better understand why incidents like this happen. His underwater microphones have exposed a world of deafening sound and animal communication never observed with such clarity(清晰) before.

It was not an easy task. Sound waves don't travel through water in the uniform, predictable way they do through the air. Instead, the temperature, salinity (盐度) and, flow of water have great effects on their path.

What can be done? One solution is to change shipping routes to courses where ships are statistically less likely to meet animals. It’s also possible to slow ships down to 18km/h or less, which is less likely to seriously injure a whale.

As for dealing with the root cause of the problem, the UN’s International Maritime Organisation has already published guidelines on how to quieten ships, but it will be a while before the effects of such changes might be observed.

“The ocean is not our world,” comments Andre. But it is ours to look after. And thanks to his work, we can better understand the effects of subsea sound pollution.

1. What does the underlined word “desensitised” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Stubborn.B.Flexible.C.Dull.D.Friendly.
2. What’s one way to solve the problem according to the text?
A.To lower the speed of ships.
B.To reduce the number of ships.
C.To set up preserves under the sea.
D.To give the injured animals timely treatment.
3. What is the author’s attitude towards what Michel Andre has done?
A.Doubtful.B.Disapproving.C.Positive.D.Uncaring.
4. What is the text mainly about?
A.A great expert.B.Noise in the sea.
C.Animals in the sea.D.Sea exploration technology.

9 . Abebe Bikila stared at the athletes from his own country, who were competing in the Olympic Games. The name Ethiopia (埃塞俄比亚) was written across the back of each athlete’s uniform (衣服). As Abebe Bikila watched, he made up his mind to become one of those athletes.

In 1932, Abebe Bikila was born in a poor family in a small town near Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. As a child, he always ran to school a few kilometres away from his home. After leaving school, Abebe Bikila went into the army. He was later found to be excellent as a marathon (马拉松赛跑) runner. In 1960, he was on his way to Rome as a member of the Ethiopian Olympic team.

In Rome, Abebe Bikila succeeded in completing things that no runner had ever achieved before. When he won the Olympic marathon, he became the first black African to win a gold medal. And he set a new world record. Another thing that made people surprised was that he ran the race in his bare (赤裸的) feet. When asked why he ran barefoot, Abebe Bikila said, “I wanted the world to know that my country Ethiopia has always won with determination and heroism.”

By 1964, Abebe Bikila had become wellknown as a barefoot runner. In the same year, he headed for the Tokyo Olympics. But six weeks before his big race, Abebe Bikila suffered an attack of appendicitis (阑尾炎). When he arrived in Japan, he was still recovering from the operation to remove his appendix. But Abebe Bikila ran the marathon — this time wearing shoes — and won it! He beat his own record in 1960 by more than four minutes. That made him the first runner to continuously win two Olympic marathons.

In 1968, a car accident left the great runner unable to walk for ever. Abebe Bikila died in 1973. A huge crowd, including the then ruler of Ethiopia, Atse Haile Selassie, gathered as he was laid to rest. Abebe Bikila will always be remembered for his great ability, love of country, and true Olympic spirit. In the heart of all sports fans, Abebe Bikila remains an excellent Olympic athlete.
