3 . At the White Coat Ceremony, first-year medical students received their medical jackets and swore, marking a transition into the world of medicine. This historic ceremony was especially moving as it meant a new era of inclusion of Native Americans entering medicine.
On July 31, 2020, 54 future doctors were welcomed to the College of Osteopathic Medicine at the Cherokee Nation, the first ever tribally affiliated (部落附属的) medical school in the US. Within this first Class of 2024, 20 percent are of Native American heritage, while 40 percent come from rural communities.
The Cherokee Nation paid $40 million for the construction of the medical school, a modern 84,000-square-foot facility. Construction on the site is expected to be completed this year. The campus officially sits on Cherokee tribal land, but four other tribal nations agreed to share the burden of supporting the new institution. The five native nations have promised to provide financial backing for scholarships, as well as allowing students to make use of tribal clinics for clinical rotations (换班).
Student Ashton Glover-Gatewood, a member of the Choctaw Nation and first year medical student said, “Being able to practice within Indian Health Service allows me to serve a great need in my own native community. Not only is a trusting relationship promoted by patients having access to medical doctors who look like them, but also higher quality of health care delivery can be enjoyed by both patients and physicians.”
As the first ever tribally affiliated medical school, the program aims to shape future doctors to work with communities who have lacked medical care and resources. By focusing on community-based, holistic (整体的) frameworks, it is clear that the school is well on the way to training medical professionals who can fulfill that mission.
Having a focus on giving back and cultural sensitivity, the Class of 2024 put on their white coats with a vision to make a positive impact.

4 . People enjoy giving to others. Generosity is a form of giving freely without the expectation of receiving anything in return. Not only does it make one feel happy and fulfilled, a recent study shows that generosity can actually lengthen one’s life.
A study from the University of California researched giving from one generation to another. Previous studies have measured giving on an individual level, but these researchers aimed to compare cultural differences around the world. They took data from 34 countries on six continents and measured the total transfers of private gifts from relatives, as well as health care and retirement benefits.
They concluded that both giving and receiving are beneficial. The researchers quoted a study on “warm-glow giving,” which shows how altruistic givers may not receive anything in return, yet their happiness and health improves 120.
People who volunteer, share and offer support benefit from their actions. They have improved mental health, physical health, sense of happiness and enjoy longevity (长寿) across all societies studied and in all ages. Another benefit of giving is the release of oxytocin, a hormone that produces feelings of love and generosity.
As for myself, in an interview for New York Times on March 20, I stated that due to our high levels of trust in Finland, people are willing to follow instructions and trust that everyone will do their part… and feeling that we are in this together.
The report suggests that since living in a trusting society benefits individuals’ health, it results in lower health care costs. A trusting social environment also promotes wellbeing, leading to an improvement in the length of life for all. Those who are generous become less isolated, less self-critical and less self-centered. They develop confidence, become more familiar and gain a sense of purpose. According to the generosity study, they tend to live longer and happier lives.

Doing too much
We see this problem in kids who are always ready to cut in a talk or a game.
Some kids have trouble making friends because they behave in ways that set them apart from the other kids in the social groups. For example, they may always try to be funny on purpose, or have strange interests and habits.

9 . Saturday finally came. And I was looking at my watch very often.
As the sun began to set, Henry had two visitors, Tom and Joe. They were two miners and were Henry's friends. They carried guitars and brought flowers and a bottle of whiskey. They put the flowers in vases and began to play some fast and lively songs.
That night, they kept giving Henry glasses of whiskey, which they made him drink. When I reached for one of the two glasses left on the table, Tom stopped my arm. "Drop that glass and take the other one!" he whispered. He gave the remaining glass of whiskey to Henry just as the clock began to strike midnight.
Henry emptied the glass. His face grew whiter and whiter. "Boys," he said, "I am feeling sick. I want to lie down."
Henry was asleep almost before the words were out of his mouth.
In a moment, his two friends had picked him up and carried him into the bedroom. They fastened the door and came back. They seemed to be getting ready to leave. So I said, "Please don't go gentlemen. She is coming back and will not know me. I am a stranger to her."
They looked at each other. "Henry's wife has been dead for nineteen years," Tom said.
"Dead?" I whispered.
"Dead or worse," he said.
"She went to see her parents about six months after she got married. On her way back, on a Saturday evening in June, when she was almost here, the Indians captured her. No one ever saw her again. Henry lost his mind. He thinks she is still alive. When June comes, he thinks she has gone on her trip to see her parents. Then he begins to wait for her to come back."
"On the Saturday night she is supposed to come home, we come here to be with him. We put a sleeping drug in his drink so he will sleep through the night. Then he is all right for another year."
Joe picked up his hat and his guitar. "We have done this every June for nineteen years," he said. He opened the door of the pretty little house and then they disappeared into the darkness.
