2 . Light-to-moderate alcohol consumption may offer some protective benefits for patients with heart disease, a new study suggests. The research pulled data from a combined sample field of 48,423 patients, thousands of whom had history of heart-related diseases.
The researchers noted that lifestyle and dietary habits play a major role in secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD), but that the impact of alcohol consumption on patients’ prognosis remains unclear. “While light-to-moderate alcohol consumption is associated with a lower risk of developing multiple cardiovascular outcomes in general population groups, it’s difficult to extend the supposed cardio-protective effects to CVD patients because of their typically older age and compromised vasculature as well as the medications they take to prevent secondary events,” researchers wrote.
Among the patient sample, former drinkers were separated from current drinkers, with the latter being broken into three groups of low-level drinkers, medium-level drinkers and high-level drinkers. Patients were followed until either their death or first detected heart-related diseases.
An analysis of three major cohorts together with those from 12 published studies found J-curve relationships between alcohol consumption and mortality in those with cardiovascular disease. The greatest reduction in all-cause mortality was found among patients with light alcohol consumption. “In summary, our study shows an alcohol intake up to about 105g a week is associated with lower risks of both mortality and subsequent cardiovascular events among CVD patients,” the team wrote.
The research team warned that the study had limitations and that current drinkers may not need to stop drinking for secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease, but rather be informed that lower levels of consumption may be associated with reduced risks. Patients who are non-drinkers, however, should not be encouraged to take up light drinking.

3 . I am Fionn Ferreira, an Irish teenager. I am very delighted to have won $50,000 for my project. My project came about as I was constantly hearing about plastic pollution on the news. And I also see the real effects on our beaches every day. I discovered, to my shock, that at present no filtration (过滤) for microplastics takes place in any European wastewater treatment centers, so I started looking for a solution.
Seeing that there was none, I decided to investigate further, finally finding a way to use the feerofluid (铁磁流体), a liquid which sticks to the plastic allowing it to be removed using magnets. After over 1,000 tests I have proved that my method would remove 87% or higher of microplastics.
I grew up in West Cork, Ireland. My hometown is surrounded by untouched nature. This has been my primary inspiration about how nature works. I soon discovered that science really was in everything. The fact that I lived in such a remote place meant that I had to build my own equipment and lab to conduct tests and experiments.
Inspired by scientists such as Ben Feringa and his work with organic chemistry and nanotechnology (纳米技术), I would like to study chemistry or chemical engineering when finishing my last year of secondary school. Both of these subjects will be suited to me as I really enjoy problem-solving and experiments.
One of the most valuable rewards from the science fair for me is the opportunity to present my work to a group of professional judges. Winning the prize is a great honour to me as this is an acknowledgement of my project and ideas.
Also, winning the prize will give my project more attention. There is nothing I would like to see more than my project to be used in addressing microplastics in our oceans worldwide.
1. What do we know about Fionn?A.He is studying at college. | B.He lives by the sea. |

A.To purify the polluted air. | B.To recycle microplastics in cities. |
C.To collect plastic wastes in water. | D.To remove microplastics from water. |
A.Competitive. | B.Creative. | C.Optimistic. | D.Humorous. |
A.Seeing his project applied widely in real life. |
B.Going to the science fair to get another prize. |
C.Attracting more attention to his project. |
D.Getting his project acknowledged by the judges. |

6 . I have met many people, but I will always remember my teacher, Mrs. Lawrence.
I will remember Mrs. Lawrence for her good character. She is always nice and helpful to the students. She will take every chance to praise the students that are not so good in class. I wish I could have the same great character as her.
I will always remember the great moments when we are together. Once I stayed in her room for several days and it was really enjoyable. I love to listen to all the stories and things about her.
I also like her creativity(创造力). We don’t like boring books, music, pictures, students and so on. She teaches us about these boring things in ways that we like. I also enjoy the way she asks us to be quiet while she is talking at the front of the classroom. She will give us a lovely little flower when we do something well. The student that has got the most flowers at the end of the month will receive gifts like pies, drinks and chips.
I will never forget Mrs. Lawrence. She has taught me to always be a person of good character, even if I'm angry. She has taught me just to have fun and not to worry. She has also taught me to be creative and enjoy what I do. That is why I will remember Mrs. Lawrence forever.

7 . As you are growing and changing, you have more responsibilities and also more freedom to spend time with other people. While you may feel ready to make your own decisions about where and when to go, your parents will put limits on you. So you may find you are arguing with your parents more than you used to. The reason why your parents do this is that they care about you and want to protect you from danger.
Here are some tips for how to avoid and handle arguments with your parents:
【1】Discuss the rules ahead of time and not at the last minute. This way you will be able to tell what they will say yes or no to before you make plans. Your parents can also explain to you why each rule is in place. Ask them to give you the chance to explain how the rules make you feel and suggest what you think are right rules. Your parents may be willing to listen to your ideas and use them when making rules that you both agree on.
【2】Try to remain calm when your parents say no to something. You will show your parents that you are responsible and mature(成熟的) by talking instead of shouting.
【3】Spend time with your family. Some teens argue with their parents over the amount of time they spend with their friends. Communicate with each other and make some special family time so that you can all enjoy the time you spend at home. Suggest activities that your whole family will enjoy together such as going on a hike, taking a bike ride, or going to the beach.
1. Your parents limit your activity mainly because they ______.A.are worried about your safety | B.are afraid it will affect your study |
C.think the thing you'll do is bad | D.want you to be with them at home |
A.you have to obey | B.you and your parents have discussed |
