Robert Owens felt     1     (defeat) and helpless on Sunday as he waited in Louisiana’s capital city for one of the most     2     (power) hurricanes ever to strike the US.

The 27-year-old man had spent days     3     (anxious) watching long lines of cars leaving for safer locations as Hurricane Ida     4     (approach). He had hoped that his wife and two children would be among them. But leaving would have required money for gas and a hotel room—something they didn’t have.

Out of desperation, Owens went to the bank on Saturday and applied     5     a payday loan. But he     6     (tell) he didn’t have enough credit history.

“Our bank account is empty-we can’t afford     7     (leave),” he said. “A lot of us here in my neighborhood have to stay and wait, not knowing how bad it’s going to get,” he said. “It’s     8     terrifying feeling to think my family is getting left behind.”

“The fact     9     we are not middle class or above just keeps coming back to bite us again and again, in so many different     10     (direction)and ways. A simple payday advance is just one of them,” he said. “It’s like we have to pay for being poor, even though we’re trying not to be poor.”

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了中英文之间的差别,说明学中文并没有我们所想象的那么难。

2 . In this article, I’m going to show you certain aspects of the Chinese language and explain why they make learning the language a lot easier than you might think.

No verb conjugations (变化)

When you learn English, you need to remember how the verb changes with the subject and time. In Chinese, there are no verb inflections (词尾的屈折变化) at all.     1    .

No grammatical cases

In English, we make a difference between how pronouns are used depending on if they are the subject or the object of a sentence.     2    . None of that in Chinese!

Flexible parts of speech

When learning English, you need to remember different forms of the words depending on what part of speech they belong to. For example, we say “ice” (noun), “icy” (adjective) and “to ice” (verb). These look different.     3    . You don’t know which one it is unless you know the context. This means that speaking and writing becomes much easier since you don’t need to remember so many different forms!

    4

Word order in Chinese can be a little bit tricky, but it becomes much easier at more advanced levels. As a beginner, there are a few patterns you need to learn, and once you’ve done that, you can just fill in the words you’ve learnt and people will be able to understand. It also helps that the basic word order is the same as in English: subject—verb—object.

What all these boil down to is that learning Chinese needn’t be all that hard. Yes, reaching an advanced level takes a lot of time and effort.     5

A.Relatively easy word order
B.The same subject—verb—object order
C.In short, it is very easy to learn Chinese well
D.We say “he talks to her”, while “him talks to she” is wrong
E.In Chinese, though, these could all be represented by one single word “ice”
F.For example, you can use “look” for any person and refer to any period of time
G.But getting to basic conversational fluency is easy for anyone who really wants it

3 . Technology is likely to play a big part in reaching its climate goals in the future.

Fusion is the process that fires the sun. But some experts say it could someday power our homes. Fusion happens when the nuclei (核) of two atoms are subjected to extreme heat. This leads to the formation of a new larger atom and large amounts of energy. One problem is the process itself requires a large amount of energy. Developers of the technology haven’t yet performed a fusion reaction that releases more energy than it requires. In addition, running an electric power plant of fusion would require the resulting heat to be contained in an economical way.

Advanced nuclear plants would be smaller than today’s massive nuclear reactors. Experts say they could be used in rural areas and could take over for wind and solar power when the sun goes down or the wind dies. But advanced nuclear reactors are difficult and costly to build. Critics say they would also create more waste. And they would run on uranium (铀), which could make some advanced reactors more appealing to militants (激进分子) seeking materials to make weapons.

Currently, there are 15 direct air capture plants operating worldwide, getting CO directly from the air and puts the gas underground. The costs are currently high. But supporters say those costs will fall as the technology improves. They also say tax breaks for businesses could help the technology. But critics say offering large credits could actually lead to more plants continuing to burn fossil fuels.

Hydrogen (氢) can be mixed with natural gas to make a cleaner-burning fuel. This could power a fuel cell vehicle. Such a vehicle would release environmentally friendly water vapors.

So-called clean hydrogen can be produced using energy methods such as wind and solar. But those methods are more costly than “grey hydrogen”, which is made with fossil fuels. Geothermal power plants capture heat up to 370 degrees Celsius far below the earth’s surface. The heat creates steam that can turn turbines (涡轮机) to produce electricity. But the technology would need to greatly expand to become a major alternative to fossil fuels.

1. How does the author develop the passage?
A.By analyzing the cost.
B.By introducing the values.
C.By weighing the positive and negative.
D.By following the order of great importance.
2. What can we learn from the text?
A.Carbon Capture is in the theoretical stage.
B.Nuclear fusion has been widely used in families.
C.Grey hydrogen belongs to environmental protection energy
D.The advanced nuclear plants have hidden dangers of making weapons.
3. What technology is suitable for countries having the heat in the interior(内部)of the earth?
A.Geothermal power.B.Carbon Capture.
C.Advanced Nuclear.D.Fusion and Hydrogen.
4. What is the best title for the text?
A.New Issues Facing Climate Goals
B.Develop New Energy According to Local Conditions
C.What Are the Future Development Goals of Clean Energy?
D.Which Technologies Could Help the World Reach Its Climate Goals?

4 . Are You Emotional Intelligent?

They’re curious about people. It doesn’t matter if they’re introverted(内向的)or extroverted, emotionally intelligent people are curious about everyone around them.     1     —much of emotional intelligence comes down to social awareness, for example, the ability to read other people, know what they’re about, and understand what they’re going through.

They are difficult to offend. If they have a firm grasp of whom they are, it’s difficult for someone to say or do something that easily gets them annoyed.    2    , High EQ individuals keep their feelings in control. When they need to meet an annoying person, they approach the situation reasonably. They identify their own emotions and don’t allow anger or frustration to fuel chaos.

3    . Emotionally intelligent people master their emotions because they understand them, and they use an extensive vocabulary of feelings to do so. While many people might describe themselves as simply feeling “bad,” emotionally intelligent people can clearly explain whether they feel “irritable,” “frustrated,” or “anxious.” The more specific your word choice, the better insight you have into exactly how you are feeling, what caused it, and what you should do about it.

They limit their caffeine intake. Drinking excessive amounts of caffeine leads to the release of adrenaline(肾上腺素), which is the source of the fight-or-flight response. The fight-or-flight mechanism avoids reasonable thinking in favor of a faster response to survival.    4    , but not so great when they are responding to a curt(唐突无礼的)e-mail.

When making plans with friends or family, they will say their schedule is “flexible”, rather than “empty” or “free”.    5    , while not placing any hard limits.

A.And they are good judges of character
B.This is excellent when a bear is chasing you
C.They have a powerful emotional vocabulary
D.This can control the length or frequency of any activities
E.They are also quite important to the people around them
F.Self-confidence and open-mindedness create a pretty thick skin
G.This makes emotionally intelligent people as perfect as possible

5 . Science can help you improve your study methods. For more than 100 years, psychologists have done research on which study habits work best. Some tips help for almost every subject. For example, don’t just cram! And test yourself, instead of just rereading the material. Here are 4 tips to tweak your study habits.

1. Space out your studying

Nate Kornell, a psychologist at Williams College, thinks it’s a good idea to study the day before a big test.     1    . Instead, space out those study sessions. Kornell compares our memory to water in a bucket that has a small leak. Try to refill the bucket while it’s still full, and you can’t add much more water. Allow time between study sessions, and some of the material may drip out of your memory.     2    . And you’ll remember it better, next time, he notes.

2. Practice, practice, practice!

Musicians practice their instruments.     3    . The same should go for learning. “If you want to be able to remember information, the best thing you can do is practice,” says Katherine Rawson. She’s a psychologist at Kent State University in Ohio. In one 2013 study, students took practice tests over several weeks. On the final test, they scored more than a full letter grade better, on average, than did students who studied the way they normally had.

3. Test yourself

That 2010 study backs up one of Nebel’s preferred study habits. Before big tests, her mom quizzed her on the material. “Now I know that was retrieval practice,” she says. “It’s one of the best ways you can study.” As Nebel got older, she quizzed herself. For example, she might cover up the definitions in her notebook. Then she tried to recall what each term meant. “    4    ,” Sana suggests. “Put questions on one side and the answers on the other side.” Friends can even quiz each other on the phone, she says. “Try to quiz yourself the way the teacher asks questions,” Nebel adds.

4. Dig deeper

It’s hard to remember a string of facts and figures if you don’t push further. Ask why things are a certain way. How did they come about? Why do they matter? Psychologists call this elaboration. It’s taking class material and “asking a lot of how and why questions about it,” Nebel says. In other words, don’t just accept facts at face value.     5    . And it creates a bigger network in your brain of things that relate to one another, she says. That larger network makes it easier to learn and remember things.

A.Some experts hold that studying late at night can be really useful
B.Of course, nothing can replace studying with your mother
C.This helps you combine new information with other things you know
D.But then you’ll be able to relearn it and learn more in your next study session
E.Create a deck of flash cards every time you learn new information
F.But research shows it’s a bad idea to squeeze all your studying into that day
G.Athletes practice sports skills

6 . When I was in primary school, I was actually a little shy. One thing that really frightened me was speaking in front of many people, whether strangers or acquaintances (熟人). It was my sixth-grade teacher, Mr. Bamick, who helped me get past that. That year we had to make four oral (口头的) book reports in front of the class. Some of the kids were even glad to do it, but I was scared to death. Mr. Bamick recognized my fear, so be told me to do a report on a book that was about something that really interested me.
