Welcome to our school. This booklet has some useful information about your new school. Read it carefully.

Times of the School Day

Students should arrive at school at 8:00 am. On most school days the school closes at 5:00 pm. Students must leave the site before 4:00 pm.

Uniform

Students must wear the school uniform (校服). All items of clothing must be clearly marked with the student’s name.

— white shirt (boys), blue /white blouse (girls);

— grey suit (boys), grey skirt and navy-blue pullover (girls);

— blue and white tie (boys), ties not necessary (girls);

— dark grey socks (boys), white/navy socks (girls);

— black shoes (no trainers or boots).

School Lunches

We have a popular cafeteria which serves hot and cold meals. For a good midday meal you need to spend about £1.85. Students who bring their sandwiches/packed lunches can eat them in the dining hall. Students must not leave the school during the lunch hour.

Library

The library is on the 1st floor. It is open Monday to Friday from 8:30 am — 1:15 pm and 1:25 pm — 4:00 pm for students, teachers and parents.

Absence from School

When a child can’t come to school,we ask parents to phone the school on the first day of absence. When the student returns to school, he/she should bring a letter from their parents to explain their absence.

Yuan Longping, known as the “father of hybrid rice”, was born in 1930.    1    (learn) that farmers often had poor harvests and sometimes even had a serious     2     (short) of food to eat, he chose to study agriculture and graduated from Southwest Agricultural College in 1953.

Since his graduation, Yuan has    3     (devote) his life to finding ways to produce more rice.Through intense effort, he overcame enormous technical    4     (difficulty) to develop the first hybrid rice    5    could be used for farming in 1974.This hybrid enabled farmers to expand their output    6    (great)．

Today,     7    is estimated that about 60 percent of domestic rice consumption in China     8     (comprise) of crops generated from Yuan's hybrid strains.Yuan's innovation has helped feed not just China, but many other countries that depend    9    rice as well.

Though Yuan's hybrids have made him quite wealthy, he doesn't lead    10    life of leisure.Instead, he donates much money to support agricultural research.Despite his advanced years, Yuan Longping is still young at heart and full of vision, and everyone is waiting to see what he will dream up next.

5 . When you're eating dinner with your family, do your parents ever remind you to finish all the food on your plate? If so, you should know it's not just because they want you to be healthy.

They also want to stop food waste.Every year, 1.3 billion tons of food was wasted around the world, according to the UN.That was about one-third of all food produced each year. We made a survey in 34 countries to see how much food was wasted in different countries. For example, the UAE(阿联酋)wasted the most food, with each person wasting about 1,000 kilos every year on average. However, some countries have worked hard to use their food resources wisely. France wasted the least amount of food, according to the survey. France was the first country to pass laws that banned food waste. It was not allowed to throwaway fresh food. Another law forced French restaurants to provide bags for people's leftovers(剩饭菜) .

China was the 23^rd for food waste in the survey. China's food waste was around 18millon tons every year, enough to feed up to 50 million people for one year. Facing this situation，China has been working hard to reduce food waste. In early 2013, a movement to prevent food waste called“empty plate”began. It has become popular among both government officials and general public.

6 . Scientists have designed a new machine - a robot which looks exactly like the famous scientist Albert Einstein.It can recognize and respond to human emotions(情感).The robot is made of special material that allows it to change facial expressions.The material that makes up the robot's face is so detailed that it looks like real human skin.

The robot's designers chose Einstein, the Nobel Prize winner, because he was one of the greatest scientists of all time.They also chose Einstein because his face is very well known and he appear 'loveable'.

Dr.Hanson,who designed the robot, explained that it was important to develop machines that know what human beings are feeling.

The robot uses computer software that helps it to understand hundreds of human expressions such as sadness, anger, fear and happiness.It can also recognize a person's age, and whether they are male or female.Mr.Movellan, who designed the software, said that in the future the robot could be in museums to help people from different cultures to understand one another.

Anne lived in Amsterdam in the Netherlands during World War II . Her family was Jewish so they     1     (hide) away for over two years in order not to     2     (catch)   by the German Nazis. During that time Anne wasn't able to go outdoors for so long     3     she had grown crazy about everything to do     4     nature. One evening, she stayed     5     (wake) on purpose in order to have     6     good look at the moon by herself. But as the moon gave far too much light, she didn't dare open the window. Another time, she happened     7     (be) upstairs when the window was open. She didn’t go downstairs     8     the window had to be shut.     9     (sad),   for Anne it was no pleasure    10     (do) like that any longer because nature is one thing that really must be experienced.

Helen Keller, that was born in 1880 and died in 1968, was one of the most well-known American women writer.

At 19 months, an ill took away her ability to hear, see and talk. When she was 7, Anne Sullivan came to teach her and help her learn to read, write and talk. At 24, Helen graduated from in Radcliffe College with honors. Helen wrote some excellent books as The Story of My Life and Let Us Have Faith. During his life, she devoted herself to work for the blind and the deaf mute.

She sets good example to us and her story encourages many people to face difficulty brave.

10 . No one knows for sure when advertising first started. It is possible that it grew out of the discovery that some people did certain kinds of work better than others did them. That led to the concept of specialization, which means that people would specialize, or focus, on doing one specific job.

Let's take a man we'll call Mr. Fielder, for example. He did everything connected with farming. He planted seeds, tended the fields, and harvested and sold his crops. At the same time, he did many other jobs on the farm. However, he didn't make the bricks for his house, cut his trees into boards, make the plows, or any of the other hundreds of things a farm needs. Instead, he got them from people who specialized in doing each of those things.

Suppose there was another man we shall call Mr. Plowright. Using what he knew about farming and working with iron, Mr. Plowright invented a plow that made farming easier. Mr. Plowright did not really like farming himself and wanted to specialize in making really good plows. Perhaps, he thought, other farmers will trade what they grow for one of my plows.

How did Mr. Plowright let people know what he was doing? Why, he advertised, of course. First he opened a shop and then he put up a sign outside the shop to attract customers. That sign may have been no more than a plow carved into a piece of wood and a simple arrow pointing to the shop door. It was probably all the information people needed to find Mr. Plowright and his really good plows.

Many historians believe that the first outdoor signs were used about five thousand years ago. Even before most people could read, they understood such signs. Shopkeepers would carve into stone, clay, or wood symbols for the products they had for sale.

A medium, in advertising talk, is the way you communicate your message. You might say that the first medium used in advertising was signs with symbols. The second medium was audio, or sound, although that term is not used exactly in the way we use it today. Originally, just the human voice and maybe some kind of simple instrument, such as a bell, were used to get people's attention.

A crier, in the historical sense, is not someone who weeps easily. It is someone, probably a man, with a voice loud enough to be heard over the other noises of a city. In ancient Egypt, shopkeepers might hire such a person to spread the news about their products. Often this earliest form of advertising involved a newly arrived ship loaded with goods. Perhaps the crier described the goods, explained where they came from, and praised their quality. His job was, in other words, not too different from a TV or radio commercial in today's world.
