After starting to play basketball at just four years old, Riley Morrison became fond of the sport. Now, the nine-year-old spends most of her time practicing her skills and playing for a basketball team in California.
When she’s not playing basketball herself, the fourth grader likes watching her favorite basketball player, Stephen Curry, play for the Golden State Warriors, which also happens to be Morrison’s favorite NBA team. According to Morrison, she has been a longtime fan of Curry because of his impressive and dynamic basketball skills that lead to him being awarded MVP more than once as well as a few championship titles. And when Morrison goes to Warrior games with her dad, Chris Morrison, she always wears her No. 30 Warriors shirt to show support for her favorite player.
However, Morrison isn’t Curry’s fan just for his basketball skills. For Morrison and other young girl basketball players, Curry is a hero because of what he has been doing for women’s rights. Besides supporting his wife, Ayesha, and their two young daughters, Curry has hosted a girls’ basketball camp to encourage young women athletes.
When Morrison was starting her basketball season this year, she needed to get new sneakers (运动鞋) as her old ones were getting too small and too worn. It didn’t take long for the 9-year-old to decide she wanted to play in Under Armour’s Curry 5 sneakers.
After asking her dad about the sneakers, the pair went on the Under Armour website to look for Morrison’s dream shoes. Unfortunately, the Curry 5 sneakers weren’t available for girls. Instead, the sneakers were only available on the website’s boys’ section.
Chris could tell how upset his daughter was. He suggested she do something about it if she felt it was unfair. “Well maybe you can write a letter,” Chris told her daughter.

7 . Summer is by far my favorite season of the year. I love the warm temperature, the longer, sunnier days and the opportunity to spend more time by the lake. But my love for the season quickly ends when I think of mosquitoes (蚊子). While their bites alone can be annoying, it’s just infuriating when I come inside with several new bright-red welts (红肿) while my friends so kindly report how they don’t have a single one.
Why is that? It’s not that we’re particularly unlucky. There are actually scientific reasons why mosquitoes single out certain people.
Contrary to what you might think, mosquitoes don’t bite people for food—they feed on plant nectar (花蜜). Only female mosquitoes bite, and they do so to receive proteins from your blood needed to develop their eggs.
A common belief is that mosquitoes are attracted to certain blood types. While there are no firm conclusions as to which blood type is more attractive to mosquitoes, several studies have suggested that mosquitoes are not so attracted to people with blood group A. However, they find people with blood group O a little tastier.
Mosquitoes are highly visual hunters when it comes to finding a human to bite. Research has shown that mosquitoes are more attracted to the color black, but there has been little additional research into why this is the case.
Mosquitoes can smell out a person through the carbon dioxide given off when we breathe. Therefore, people who give off more of it—larger individuals and people who are breathing heavily when working out—are more attractive to a mosquito.
In a study, mosquitoes were observed to land on participants more frequently after they had drank a small amount of beer. Probably, mosquitoes are more attracted to people who have been drinking beer.
Mosquito bites are annoying. The best way to handle mosquito bites is not to get bitten in the first place.

9 . A Norwegian fjords (峡湾) adventure
An InterRail Norway pass (interrail.eu) allows three days of travel in any one month for £144. Double rooms in hotels in the fjord areas start from about £130, pension (guest house) from £60 to £100. There are more than 1,000 fjords in Norway where you get the best views. This is the case with the Sognefjord, which is the longest in the country and known as the “king of the fjords”.
Top tip
Norway is a natural playground. The best way to save money is to keep active. Bike hire (租), kayaking (皮划艇) trips and even guided walks are not especially expensive.
Do it yourself
You can fly direct to Oslo from London or Manchester. Ryanair (ryanair.com) is offering October returns from Manchester for £33. Travel from Oslo to Sogndal by Vy Express bus (vybuss.com); return tickets in September start at £78. There are also trains from Oslo to Flam, and while it is around twice as expensive as the bus, it is a famously scenic journey.
