1 . Angel Sanguino, an electronics technician from Caracas, Venezuela, who last year lost his left arm in a motorcycle accident, has recently won a prize for science, technology and innovation, after he managed to build a robotic arm that would allow him to perform a series of useful tasks.
33-year-old Angel Sanguino was riding his motorcycle when he was hit by a speeding car. He was taken to the emergency room, and the doctor had to amputate(截肢)his left arm. It was a devastating blow to the talented electronics technician. The doctor told him that he should accept his disability and move on with his life, but he had other plans. Three months after his accident, the young man used his experience to design an artificial arm that would allow him to repair electronic components just like before.
With the help of his uncle, Brunel Rodriguez, Angel managed to create an ingenious robotic arm fitted with a series of switches and sensors that allowed him to control it with the motion of his collarbone(锁骨). Angel used his knowledge of electronics to make sure that the artificial arm would allow him to do his job without any kind of assistance from anybody else. He paid little attention to aesthetics(美学), focusing solely on functionality, but he has already had a new prosthesis(假体)that is apparently much more visually appealing.

7 . The journey of a hi-tech message in a bottle has revealed the damage of plastic (塑料) pollution — as it was tracked more than 1,700 miles in a few months.
British researchers put GPS and satellite tags in 25 plastic bottles, and left them to drift (漂流) in the river Ganges(恒河) and Bay of Bengal (孟加拉湾) in India. Using mobile phones and satellite networks, the team tracked the containers across the sea — with one crossing 1,768 miles in just 94 days.
They hope the tech could be a “powerful tool” for raising awareness and changing behaviour. “Our message in a bottle tag shows how far and how fast plastic pollution can move,” said lead author Dr Emily Duncan, of the University of Exeter. “This is a truly global issue, as a piece of plastic dropped in a river or ocean could soon be washed up on the other side of the world,” she said. “Bottles in the Ganges moved in stages and got stuck — but once at sea covered greater distances, following coastal currents before dispersing (扩散) more widely.”
The 500ml containers were made the size, shape and buoyancy (浮力) of one normal plastic drink bottle to copy the movement of real rubbish. And open source hardware was used for the electronics inside, meaning researchers can “copy, modify or improve the solution we presented to track other plastics,” the team said.
“This could be used to teach about plastic pollution in schools, with children able to see where their bottle goes,” said another researcher. “Data from these tags could feed into global models to give us a clearer picture of how plastic moves across the ocean and where it ends up.”

10 . Arun Kumar Bajaj has a very unusual skill — he can paint with a sewing machine. Technically, it’s embroidering, not painting, but his artworks are so detailed that they can pass as paintings to the untrained eyes. And the fact that he does it all with a sewing machine just makes that much more impressive.
Arun was really good at drawing and painting while growing up and dreamed of becoming a famous painter, but his father died suddenly 15 years ago, which destroyed his plans and forced him to give up school in order to run the family business. His father was a tailor and he became one too, but he didn’t let the artist in him die. He started “painting” with a needle and thread, but instead of using his hands, he decided on a rather unusual tool — the sewing machine. It took him a while to master this unique art form, but today he is recognized as the world’s only sewing machine artist. His works become very popular both in India and abroad. It’s easy to see why, just by looking at them, but what really makes his embroideries special is the tool he uses.
“You need to be very careful because once you’ve stitched the cloth, there’s no way you can repair it,” Arun said. “It’s all done in a single layer to give the painting a neat look.”
Some of Arun’s most impressive works include a 4×2 feet painting of the court of Ranjit Singh which took the artist over a year to finish. Arun runs a tailoring business in the Adalat Bazar of Patiala, but he devotes a lot of his time to his artistic dream as well.
