文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了出去购物时避免感染病毒的几个建议。

1 . Do you often go out for shopping? How to avoid germs (病菌) when shopping in the grocery store?     1    .

Firstly, go to the grocery store bright and early when they’re just opening. This might be your best option. By avoiding large groups of people,     2    , as the virus is mainly spread through close contact with other people.

One of the easiest ways to spread the virus is by touching a contaminated (被污染的) surface and then touching your face, eyes, nose, or mouth.     3    . This is a lot harder than it sounds, because people touch their faces more than 20 times in a single hour. While a mask can help prevent you from touching your mouth and nose, it is strongly recommended to wear one.

4    . This may be as simple as avoiding a crowded aisle (过道) and circling back a few minutes later. Since other shoppers might not be as mindful as you are about maintaining social distance, be polite in your request that they keep their distance with a polite “excuse me.”

Just as you’re being thoughtful about your own health, be thoughtful about the health of others, suggests Dr. Larkin. “    5    , see if you can shop for them or teach them to use an online and delivery option,” she says. “Be patient and kind with one another, especially the workers keeping the stores open and functioning — and of course, if you are ill, please stay home and don’t expose others.”

A.If you have an elderly neighbor who needs help
B.You had better stay at home instead of going out
C.Therefore, avoid touching your face while shopping
D.As a result, you should wear a mask when you go shopping
E.Moreover, try to maintain a safe, six-foot distance from other shoppers
F.Before you head out to one, you need some guidelines to ensure your safety
G.you decrease your risk of becoming infected

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了西部帝王蝶的数量逐渐下降的现状以及对背后原因的分析与研究。

2 . Western monarch butterflies(帝王蝶) spend their winters on the central California coast. A few months later, they produce young in the Central Valley and as far north and east as Idaho. But where they go in between remains an open question to biologists. Therefore, a group of biologists call on anyone who spots a monarch north of Santa Barbara this spring to get a quick shot and email them the photo with a date and a location.

“Something’s going on in early spring,” said Cheryl Schultz, a professor at Washington State University Vancouver. Winter survival isn’t the problem in the short term, but they don’t know whether the monarchs are not making it to producing places, not finding plants to feed themselves along the way, she said.

The Western monarch population stood in the millions in the 1980s. In 2017, an annual count found 200,000 butterflies. In 2018, the number fell to about 30,000 — a figure that held steady last year. The monarchs’ decline is part of a larger trend among dozens of butterfly species in the West. What exactly caused the decline? Biologists attach it to a variety of reasons. Many chemicals are sprayed on the milkweed monarchs will feed on. Climate change also plays a role in challenges facing monarchs. Yet, they’re not nearly as threatening as those leading to loss of their living room. Farms used to have rough borders that were grounds for the plants monarchs love and live in. However, newly applied practices pushed crops to the edge of fields.

“Butterflies often have good years and bad. We do think there’s potential to turn the situation around,” Dr. Schultz said. And she said she saw two reasons for that. First, the population decline seen in 2017-2018 wasn’t repeated last year. And second, she’s seen butterfly populations recover before.

1. Why do the biologists need the public’s help?
A.To confirm monarchs’ producing places.
B.To find how monarchs survive the winter.
C.To address the unknown about monarchs.
D.To know the distance that monarchs cover.
2. Which of the following harms monarchs most?
A.New farming practices.B.Lack of healthy food.
C.Wide use of chemicals.D.Severe climate change.
3. What is Dr. Schultz’s attitude towards monarchs’ future?
A.Doubtful.B.Positive.C.Worried.D.Cautious.
4. What’s the best title for the text?
A.What Is Happening to the MonarchsB.Why the Monarchs Are Flying Away
C.Where All the Monarchs Have GoneD.How the Monarchs Adapt to Nature

3 . A new study of parental attitudes, Growing up Digital, by the UNSW Gonski Institute of Education found that 83 percent of carers, parents and grandparents thought their children were negatively distracted by their devices.

Parents are worried that being on a screen stops their children doing other activities, such as being physically active and playing outside, being creative or pending time connecting with friends or family. Many are concerned about the dangers of cyber-bullying and the effect of social media on their children’s mental and physical health.

Over the family dinner table, the most common argument is increasingly about use of mobile phones. Three-quarters of parents say it is hard to control their children’s use of their digital devices and two-thirds say the topic is a source of conflict in the home. Teachers are saying the same things about behaviour in classrooms.

While the digital world is not without its dangers and challenges, some experts warn parents against demonizing smartphones or social media.

The more extreme fears about the impact of the digital world on the current generation of children will likely sound as outdated in a few decades as when their great-grandparents inveighed against the evils of television or rock’n’ roll music.

Many previously sceptical parents have seen the positive human value of social media during the COVID-19 pandemic because it allowed their children to connect with friends and family through lockdowns and social distancing. Children could keep up their education remotely.

Rather than railing against the digital world, parents need to think of strategies to help their children get the best from their devices.

Parents should talk to their children about how to use their devices more productively and safely. They should accept that the online world can be creative and a source of inspiration and connection as well. They should give children positive reasons to limit their usage rather than simply telling them to put them phones away.

It is not possible to turn back time and stop children using their devices. Parents and teachers must help children get the best out of them.

1. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about digital devices?
A.Their target usersB.Their wide popularity.
C.Their major functions.D.Their potential harm.
2. What effect would digital devices have on children?
A.Calming.B.Disturbing.
C.Refreshing.D.Challenging.
3. What does the underlined word “demonizing” in Paragraph 4 most probably mean?
A.Criticizing casually.B.Controlling completely.
C.Denying totallyD.Ignoring purposefully.
4. What’s the author’s attitude to digital devices?
A.Objective.B.Critical.
C.Favorable.D.Intolerant

4 . 阅读下面材料,在空白处填入适当的内容(1个单词)或括号内单词的正确形式。

Old people who smoke may think     1     unnecessary to give up the habit as the damage from years of smoking can't be made up for. But it turns out there's a benefit of     2     (quit) even later in life. Recent research     3     (publish) in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine found that older adults who quit smoking in their 60s     4     (have) a lower chance of dying in the following years than the ones of the same age who kept smoking.

The results were based on a survey     5     more than 160, 000 participants older than 70 completed questionnaires about their smoking history in 2004 or 2005, and were tracked until the end of 2011 to see who had died. Those who quit in their 60s had     6     23 percent lower risk of death during the study than the current smokers.

The research also stresses that the most effective way     7     (keep) from smoking is to advise people not to get     8     the habit in the first place. Most smokers start and get both physically and     9     (mental) addicted during their adolescence. And among current smokers, the     10     (early) the study participants started, the higher their likelihood of dying during the follow-up period.

5 . On May 7, 2008, three men robbed a bank in a city called Waldorf of Maryland in the USA. They drove away in a van with a bag of money. They thought they had escaped. But the bank had put a pack of chemicals in the money bag, and the pack exploded.     1     Soon afterward, the police arrested one of the robbers. How did the police find him so quickly? DNA from the robbers’ blood was found on the bag of money.

DNA consists of genetic material that is found everywhere in our body, such as in our blood, skin, and saliva. It is our genetic fingerprint. All people have similar DNA, but no two people have the exact same DNA.

2    The testing works like this: After a crime occurs, the police collect evidence from a crime scene. Some of this evidence may be DNA samples, such as hairs or blood.     3     The database is computerized, and it has millions of DNA samples in it. These DNA fingerprints are taken from people all over the country who have been arrested or convicted of crimes. If the DNA in the evidence matches someone’s DNA fingerprint, that person is probably guilty of the crime. But if the evidence does not match, the person is probably innocent.

4     If DNA evidence is not collected or stored properly, for example, the tests may give wrong results. But it is still more reliable than other types of evidence. Witnesses may identify the wrong person. Lawyers, jurors, judges, and the police can make mistakes. DNA testing is usually accurate.     5

A.DNA testing is not perfect.
B.The police then set up a DNA database in the country.
C.The robbers dropped the bag, got out of the van, and ran away.
D.The robbers didn’t think the chemicals were anything dangerous.
E.How is DNA used to identify a criminal when a crime has been committed?
F.The police then compare this DNA to DNA samples from an official database.
G.It is the best way we have to prove that someone is guilty or innocent of a crime.

8 . A sheet of transparent new material at a University of Maryland lab looks like it might be plastic. But it’s actually wood—and it could eventually be used to make energy-efficient windows or even see-through buildings.

"Compared to glass, wood has lower heat conductivity, and it's lighter, stronger, and more environmentally friendly," says Liangbing Hu, a materials science professor at the University of Maryland and one of the authors of a new study of the material.

The idea is to employ the material in buildings. With a window made from transparent wood instead of glass, for example, a building would take less energy to heat and cool. Because of the structure of the wood, the windows could also reduce glare from the sun while allowing in natural light.

Researchers have experimented with transparent wood in the past, but the new method is more sustainable.

Other methods usually put the wood in a chemical compound Nacl to remove lignin, part of the wood that gives it structure. But this can weaken the wood, and it produces waste that is hard to recycle. Hu and his team made slight changes to the process so it doesn't fully remove the lignin. By brushing hydrogen peroxide(过氧化物) over the wood and leaving it under a UV light, they removed only the parts of the lignin that give it color. The result is transparent wood that can be coated in epoxy(环氧树脂).

It’s just one of a number of ways scientists and engineers are rethinking how we can use this renewable resource in construction. Skyscrapers made entirely out of wood are gaining popularity in cities around the world. And scientists recently discovered a technique to grow wood in a lab, opening up the possibility of using wood without having to cut down a forest.

The transparent wood is 50% stronger than previous transparent wood and could even be used to build load-bearing walls in a building. It could also potentially be used in other ways, such as layers used in solar cells. A new company called InventWood is working to commercialize the technology.

1. Why would people like to choose transparent wood in their buildings in preference to glass?
A.It can conduct heat more quickly.
B.It is lighter and more delicate.
C.It can let light in with less heat.
D.It has higher energy consumption.
2. Compared with the experiment in the past, what is the difference of the new method?
A.The new method is less environmentally friendly.
B.The new method can make the wood weaker.
C.Researchers brushed Nacl over the wood.
D.Researchers only took away the lignin related to color.
3. Which of the following statements may the author agree with ?
A.This see-through wood can replace glass windows.
B.This see-through wood is in mass production.
C.This transparent wood has been grown in labs.
D.This transparent wood is only popular in cities.
4. What does the last paragraph mainly focus on?

July 29, 2021 marks the 131st anniversary of Vincent Van Gogh’s die. As a big fan of Van Gogh, I fulfill my lifelong dream this summer by taking a trip to Europe. I first traveled to the Netherlands, where Van Gogh born and lived for most of his life. In Amsterdam I went to the Van Gogh Museum but viewed hundreds of his works, including much of his greatest paintings. Before visiting Amsterdam, I drove to Saint-Rémy. There Van Gogh, depressing and lonely as he was, he made one masterpiece after another. My last destination was Auvers-sur-Oise, where continues to keep the subjects of Van Gogh’s paintings looking just as they did when he painted them. At that moment I had never felt close to Van Gogh.
