Dear Paul,

I really can’t thank you very much for your invitation.

I do want to accept it and take this opportunity to introduce traditional Chinese painting to foreign friends, but I’m sorry to inform you that I can’t. The reason is because I am busy preparing me for the coming College Entrance Examination. As for the introduction speech, I strongly recommend my friend Anna, which is the most suitable choice to take my place on next Sunday. She begun to learn painting at an early age. She also has good knowledge of traditional Chinese paintings. Besides, her active personality and perfect speaking English will help make your activity a success.

Sorry again for any inconvenience caused by my absent and all the best wishes to you.

Yours,

Li Hua

4 . Moving Forward With Small Steps

Frustration is the state of feeling incompetent.     1    . As your guilt rises, your self-esteem (自尊) might be going down.

We've all seen those TV programs about organizing closets and handling the junk in the basement. Those shows can be fun to watch.    2    . Why? Our own unfinished business starts coming to mind. To reduce frustration, it pays to keep moving forward on changing small things. Little chores do add up. These kinds of techniques can move you in the right direction:

Picture the steps from A-Z on completing a larger task. It's easier to divide chores into manageable pieces if you can foresee the outcome.

Make sure money isn’t holding you up. We can all delay getting things done because of money needed.    3

4     Mental energy really plays into the mix of moving your life forward. Be sure to think about good things on purpose to lessen a downfall.

While you want to live in reality, don't forget that you have the power to bring positive thinking to your world. If you don’t, your relationships will suffer.    5    .

A.Don’t forget to talk positively to yourself on purpose
B.Other people will fear to have you around
C.But we can get very frustrated after those go off the air
D.We imagine everyone else is functioning well, while we're failing to keep up
E.Get excited about what you want to improve
F.Let your good thoughts outweigh your bad ones
G.Lining up how to pay for changes is often the real battle

5 . In an era when many parents make efforts to ensure that boys and girls have equal opportunities, a recent study found that boys are paid twice as much allowance as girls for doing weekly chores.

An analysis of 10, 000 families across the US showed that boys earned an average of $13. 80 each week compared with $6. 71 earned by girls, according to BusyKid, a web platform that allows kids to receive, spend, or invest their allowance. “I think this is a wake-up call for parents to be cognizant (认识到) of what they are paying, to make sure they are being as fair as possible,” said Gregg Murset, CEO of BusyKid,

According to the analysis, boys averaged more allowance than girls because they were more often assigned chores considered more physically difficult, including cutting the grass. Girls, meanwhile, were more often paid for jobs such as loading the dishwasher. Boys also earned more money because they were paid for things girls were not paid for at all, including showering and brushing their teeth.

In Illinois, Vaishali Patel tries hard to teach her two children that gender should’t determine what chores they are assigned or what activities they choose. The parents don’t pay their children an allowance, and instead expect them to help with all jobs around the house. But Patel said the children still pick up on old-fashioned gender stereotypes (刻板印象) from elsewhere, like when they tell their son to try dance classes in addition to the sports he plays. “He’s like, ‘No way am I doing that’,” said Patel. “Some of that is really hard to influence.”

The stereotype can also be seen at Future Investor Clubs of America, a summer camp offered in many US cities to teach financial responsibility and wealth strategies to teens. In the past 21 years, it has consistently enrolled mostly boys, despite efforts by camp management to recruit girls.

Barbara Risman, a professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago, said that while Americans have come a long way in terms of offering more equal opportunities for men and women, changing mindsets (心态) permanently takes even more time.

The best way to counter the patterns, Risman added, is to think about and discuss the way we approach gender roles as often as possible. “You can’t change behavior you have never noticed,” she said.

1. Why do boys receive more allowance than girls for doing weekly chores?
A.They are often assigned more chores than girls.
B.They are often given more difficult work.
C.They pay girls to do things for them.
D.They are willing to take on more chores.
2. The author mentioned Future Investor Clubs of America mainly to show ________.
A.how gender stereotypes influence what people do
B.the efforts Americans have made for gender equality
C.it’s common for company to get girls admitted
D.the achievements Americans have made in changing stereotypes
3. What did Risman suggest people do to fight gender stereotypes?
A.Give children more equal opportunities.
B.Discuss the gender gap with children more.
C.Assign children similar chores.
D.Give the problem more attention.
4. What is consistent with Vaishali Patel’s thoughts?
A.There is no gender difference between kids.
B.Her son hasn’t been influenced by gender stereotypes at all.
C.To change a gender stereotype takes a long time and hard work.
D.It’s a good choice to pay children for doing chores.

6 . Do you like to keep fit? We’re always told that regular exercise is good for our body and mind. More and more people are taking up activities that improve their fitness. But is there a risk some of us might get addicted and overdo it?

Well, for some people, fitness has become an addiction as they aim for perfection. And fitness trackers and apps can add to it, especially if someone is driven by achievement and perfectionism. And sharing data on social media means exercising becomes public and competitive, which could cause problems in someone who is delicate.

Experts say this can lead to a medical condition called orthorexia nervosa, or addiction to ‘healthy’ eating and over-exercise. Untreated, it can lead to nutritional disorder and mental health confusion. According to a Worklife article:“Research from scientists at University College London in 2017 found that higher social media usage was associated with increased likelihood of developing orthorexia, especially among followers of the ‘healthy eating’ influencers.”

Too much exercise can also take its toll on someone’s physical health as well. Symptoms of over-exercising include injuries such as sprained ankle, tendinitis (腱炎) and a low immune system. So how much exercise is too much? Research by the Journal of the American College of Cardiology found the ideal pace to jog was about eight kilometres per hour—and that it was best to jog no more than three times a week or for 2.5 hours in total, showing that moderate jogging is possibly more beneficial than being inactive or undertaking fierce jogging.

If you’re more of a couch potato, this might sound like good news. But for amateur who can’t help but push their bodies to the limit, the advice from Martin Turner, a sports and exercise psychologist, is, “it’s all about letting go, not being addicted, learning not to control everything, saying, ‘You don’t need to be perfect. ’”

1. What may result in fitness addiction according to the passage?
A.Some people are going too far in pursuing sports outcome.
B.People are addicted to fitness trackers and apps.
C.Social media make delicate people public and competitive,
D.A growing number of people are participating in sports to improve fitness.
2. What do we know about “orthorexia nervosa” according to Paragraph 3?
A.It will surely lead to both mental and physical disorder.
B.People who strictly follow healthy eating are more likely to suffer from it.
C.It is because of the usage of social media.
D.It means people eat healthily and exercise regularly.
3. What’s the possible meaning of the underlined word “take its toll on” in Paragraph 4?
A.Be beneficial to.B.Depend on.
C.Have an influence on.D.Do damage to.
4. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?
A.The best way to exercise is to jog.
B.For couch potatoes, you can choose either inactive or fierce jogging.
C.The ideal pace to jog is three times a week and 2.5 hours in total.
D.Advice to non-professionals is not to push yourselves too hard.

7 . The Alps has more than 5, 000 glaciers, which not only give the region its spectacular beauty but are also vital to its economy and people. Glaciers form over thousands of years, with snow freezing on the mountain top and being pressed into enormous masses of ice, which slowly move downhill.

The Alps are particularly susceptible to climate change because the global warming effect is more pronounced over land masses than over water. While the world as a whole has increased in temperature by around 0.74 degrees Celsius, the Alps region has experienced a marked increase of around 2 degrees Celsius—which means glaciers form more slowly and melt more quickly, leading to shrinkage.

Even if you do not live in an area that will be directly affected by melting glaciers, they are important because they help prevent global warming due to what scientists call the “feedback effect”. Glaciers reflect solar energy like a mirror from the planet’s surface—so as their surface area shrinks, they reflect back less of the sun's rays and the planet heats up faster for everyone.

The consequences for local communities will be devastating and far reaching. As global warning melts the glaciers, it also melts the soil, causing instability that results in catastrophic rockfalls and mudslides. In August 2017, residents of Bondo, a picturesque Swiss mountain village in the shadow of the Piz Cengalo glacier, had to flee for their lives as 3 million cubic meters of rock fell towards them.

Even if carbon emissions could be stopped immediately, two-thirds of the glaciers will still melt away by the year 2100—so the people of the Alps are going to have to adapt.

1. How do glaciers help to prevent global warming according to the passage?
A.They take in solar energy from the surroundings constantly.
B.They reflect sun's rays back to the space to cool the earth.
C.They help trees to take in more carbon dioxide.
D.They cool the earth when melting.
2. What does Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.3 million cubic meters of rock fell towards the residents.
B.Global warming cause instability to people.
C.The consequences of melting glaciers on people.
D.Global warming melts the glaciers and the soil.
3. What does the underlined word in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Related.B.Weak.
C.Sensitive.D.Important.
4. Which of the following might summarize the whole passage?
A.Melting glaciers harm a lot.B.Climate change influences the whole world.
C.Alps take measures to deal with climate change.D.Glaciers are melting faster.

9 . 阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。

Why should spiders be our friends? The reason is that they destroy so many insects     1     (include) some of the greatest enemies of the human race. Insects would make it impossible for us     2     (live) in the world, for they would devour all our crops and kill our flocks and herds if it were not for the     3     (protect) we get from insect-eating animals. We owe a lot to the birds and beasts who eat insects but all of them put together kill only a fraction of the number     4     (destroy) by spiders. Moreover, unlike some of the other insect eaters, spiders never do the     5     (little) harm to us or our belongings. Spiders are not insects,     6     many people think, nor even nearly related to them. One can tell the difference almost at a glance, for a spider always has eight legs and an insect never more than six. How many spiders are engaged in this work     7     our behalf? One authority on spiders made a census of the spiders in a grass field in the south of England and he estimated that there were more than 2, 250, 000 in one acre. Spiders are busy for at least half the year     8     (kill) insects.     9     is impossible to make more than the wildest guess at howmany they kill, but they are hungry creatures, not content with only three meals a day. It is estimated that the     10     (weigh) of all the insects destroyed by spiders in Britain in one year would be greater than that of all the human beings in the country.
