Dear Paul,
I really can’t thank you very much for your invitation.
I do want to accept it and take this opportunity to introduce traditional Chinese painting to foreign friends, but I’m sorry to inform you that I can’t. The reason is because I am busy preparing me for the coming College Entrance Examination. As for the introduction speech, I strongly recommend my friend Anna, which is the most suitable choice to take my place on next Sunday. She begun to learn painting at an early age. She also has good knowledge of traditional Chinese paintings. Besides, her active personality and perfect speaking English will help make your activity a success.
Sorry again for any inconvenience caused by my absent and all the best wishes to you.
Yours,
Li Hua

4 . Moving Forward With Small Steps
Frustration is the state of feeling incompetent.
We've all seen those TV programs about organizing closets and handling the junk in the basement. Those shows can be fun to watch.
Picture the steps from A-Z on completing a larger task. It's easier to divide chores into manageable pieces if you can foresee the outcome.
Make sure money isn’t holding you up. We can all delay getting things done because of money needed.
While you want to live in reality, don't forget that you have the power to bring positive thinking to your world. If you don’t, your relationships will suffer.

5 . In an era when many parents make efforts to ensure that boys and girls have equal opportunities, a recent study found that boys are paid twice as much allowance as girls for doing weekly chores.
An analysis of 10, 000 families across the US showed that boys earned an average of $13. 80 each week compared with $6. 71 earned by girls, according to BusyKid, a web platform that allows kids to receive, spend, or invest their allowance. “I think this is a wake-up call for parents to be cognizant (认识到) of what they are paying, to make sure they are being as fair as possible,” said Gregg Murset, CEO of BusyKid,
According to the analysis, boys averaged more allowance than girls because they were more often assigned chores considered more physically difficult, including cutting the grass. Girls, meanwhile, were more often paid for jobs such as loading the dishwasher. Boys also earned more money because they were paid for things girls were not paid for at all, including showering and brushing their teeth.
In Illinois, Vaishali Patel tries hard to teach her two children that gender should’t determine what chores they are assigned or what activities they choose. The parents don’t pay their children an allowance, and instead expect them to help with all jobs around the house. But Patel said the children still pick up on old-fashioned gender stereotypes (刻板印象) from elsewhere, like when they tell their son to try dance classes in addition to the sports he plays. “He’s like, ‘No way am I doing that’,” said Patel. “Some of that is really hard to influence.”
The stereotype can also be seen at Future Investor Clubs of America, a summer camp offered in many US cities to teach financial responsibility and wealth strategies to teens. In the past 21 years, it has consistently enrolled mostly boys, despite efforts by camp management to recruit girls.
Barbara Risman, a professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago, said that while Americans have come a long way in terms of offering more equal opportunities for men and women, changing mindsets (心态) permanently takes even more time.
The best way to counter the patterns, Risman added, is to think about and discuss the way we approach gender roles as often as possible. “You can’t change behavior you have never noticed,” she said.

6 . Do you like to keep fit? We’re always told that regular exercise is good for our body and mind. More and more people are taking up activities that improve their fitness. But is there a risk some of us might get addicted and overdo it?
Well, for some people, fitness has become an addiction as they aim for perfection. And fitness trackers and apps can add to it, especially if someone is driven by achievement and perfectionism. And sharing data on social media means exercising becomes public and competitive, which could cause problems in someone who is delicate.
Experts say this can lead to a medical condition called orthorexia nervosa, or addiction to ‘healthy’ eating and over-exercise. Untreated, it can lead to nutritional disorder and mental health confusion. According to a Worklife article:“Research from scientists at University College London in 2017 found that higher social media usage was associated with increased likelihood of developing orthorexia, especially among followers of the ‘healthy eating’ influencers.”
Too much exercise can also take its toll on someone’s physical health as well. Symptoms of over-exercising include injuries such as sprained ankle, tendinitis (腱炎) and a low immune system. So how much exercise is too much? Research by the Journal of the American College of Cardiology found the ideal pace to jog was about eight kilometres per hour—and that it was best to jog no more than three times a week or for 2.5 hours in total, showing that moderate jogging is possibly more beneficial than being inactive or undertaking fierce jogging.
If you’re more of a couch potato, this might sound like good news. But for amateur who can’t help but push their bodies to the limit, the advice from Martin Turner, a sports and exercise psychologist, is, “it’s all about letting go, not being addicted, learning not to control everything, saying, ‘You don’t need to be perfect. ’”

7 . The Alps has more than 5, 000 glaciers, which not only give the region its spectacular beauty but are also vital to its economy and people. Glaciers form over thousands of years, with snow freezing on the mountain top and being pressed into enormous masses of ice, which slowly move downhill.
The Alps are particularly susceptible to climate change because the global warming effect is more pronounced over land masses than over water. While the world as a whole has increased in temperature by around 0.74 degrees Celsius, the Alps region has experienced a marked increase of around 2 degrees Celsius—which means glaciers form more slowly and melt more quickly, leading to shrinkage.
Even if you do not live in an area that will be directly affected by melting glaciers, they are important because they help prevent global warming due to what scientists call the “feedback effect”. Glaciers reflect solar energy like a mirror from the planet’s surface—so as their surface area shrinks, they reflect back less of the sun's rays and the planet heats up faster for everyone.
The consequences for local communities will be devastating and far reaching. As global warning melts the glaciers, it also melts the soil, causing instability that results in catastrophic rockfalls and mudslides. In August 2017, residents of Bondo, a picturesque Swiss mountain village in the shadow of the Piz Cengalo glacier, had to flee for their lives as 3 million cubic meters of rock fell towards them.
Even if carbon emissions could be stopped immediately, two-thirds of the glaciers will still melt away by the year 2100—so the people of the Alps are going to have to adapt.
1. How do glaciers help to prevent global warming according to the passage?A.They take in solar energy from the surroundings constantly. |
