1 . Life continually requires that we write down a few words of thanks: for holidays, meals, presents or people’s place in our hearts. However, too often, our messages end up flat or somewhat unconvincing. To make our messages more effective, we might take a lesson from the history of art.

To some extent, what distinguishes great from common art is the level of detail with which the world has been studied. A talented artist is, first and foremost, someone who takes us into the specifics of the reasons why an experience or a place felt valuable. They don’t merely tell us that spring is ‘nice’, they zero in on the particular contributing factors to this niceness: leaves that have the softness of a newborn’s hands, the contrast between a warm sun and a sharp breeze, the soft cry of baby blackbirds....

Some of the reason why great artists are rare is that our minds are not well set up to understand why we feel as we do. But we can be confident if our minds have been affected, the reasons why they’ve been so will be somewhere, waiting to be uncovered. We stand to realise that it wasn’t so much that the food was ‘delicious’; but that the potatoes in particular had a charming rosemary and garlic flavour. A friend wasn’t just ‘nice’; they brought in a hugely sensitive and generous tone to bear in asking us what it had been like for us when we suffered. The details will be there, waiting for us to catch them.

We don’t have to be great artists to send effective thank-you notes. We just need to locate and hold on tightly to two or three highly detailed reasons for our gratitude.

1. What can we infer from paragraph 1?
A.We seldom express gratitude by writing.
B.We usually find messages of thanks touching.
C.We should take a course for message writing.
D.We may draw inspiration for thank-yous from arts.
2. What does the underlined phrase “zero in on” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Leave out.B.Clear up.C.Focus on.D.Hold back.
3. How is paragraph 3 developed?
A.By classification.B.By example.C.By definition.D.By process.

5 . With the start of university coming into view, for people who have a child that is getting ready to leave home for the first time, you may be feeling more than a little nervous.     1     Fortunately, there are several steps that you can take to help prepare your child for this important occasion in their lives.

Teach them how to budget. If your child has not yet been taught how to budget their own money, then now is the ideal time for them to learn. It can also be a good idea to try and determine how your child will deal with having their own money at university.     2

Offer them cooking lessons. Your child might already be able to cook a few simple meals that will stop them from surviving on noodles for the foreseeable future.     3     So why not spend the next week or so teaching them a few nutritious meals.

4     If you are worried about your child’s departure, then this is probably nothing compared to how your child is feeling. Not only are they leaving home for the first time, but they will also be starting a new life and having to make new friends. Therefore, just before they leave, it can be really helpful to sit down and talk to them about any concerns or worries they may have.

Get the missing link.     5     What memory or association between the two of you stand out the most? Find a present that is symbolic of this. Thus, every time your child sees it, he or she will be reminded of you and the love that you share.

7 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Ellen Kalish runs the Ravensbeard Wildlife Center in New York. She is used to getting calls about taking in wild animals. When a man called asking if she could rescue an owl(猫头鹰), she was happy to help. Then, the caller told her where this tiny owl was hiding out. It was found inside the Christmas tree in the Rockefeller Center, where it is a yearly tradition to decorate trees. But this year, the tree looked a little worse. Many people made fun of its sagging(低垂的)branches. They called the tree a “symbol of 2020”, meaning its sad look reminded them how tough the past year was.

The tale of the owl's rescue quickly became the highlight of this year's tree. Before the tree was put up to decorate, one of the workers spotted the creature. It was buried in the base of the tree. The owl most likely traveled with the tree on its journey to Manhattan. So, how did it end up stuck in the tree in the first place?

Kalish offered a few possibilities. The owl could have flown to the tree to hide there because it was injured and then got trapped later. Or maybe once the tree was loaded onto a truck, the branches squeezed it into the trunk. The bird may have just been too scared to move. Actually, there is no proof about where it came from. “That would be the last place it would want to go. Why would it pick that tree if it had a choice not to? It's smart and it wouldn't do that. ,” she explained.

In that case, the worker had to bring the owl home. He decided to find a place that rescues wildlife animals. That was why he called the Center. After Kalish got the full story about the bird. she met the man at a gas station. Then the man handed her a box with the owl inside.
