3 . How to stay focused in class
Being relaxed during class is a bad habit, and it is also bad to your grade. Focusing in class not only proves to teachers that you are a capable student but also shows that you have the ability to control yourself, which will be very important.
Look at teacher and make eye contact. Your teacher is not just standing up there talking.
Take notes. By taking notes, you’ll be able to “get into” the lesson. Write down key points as your teacher speaks. And listen to the key phrases such as “This is important” “This is the main idea” “This will be the test” etc.
Get involved in class discussions. This is a wonderful way to become a more focused, successful student. When a teacher asks a question, offer to answer it.
Ask a question.
A.Avoid sitting with friends. |
B.This can help you listen more attentively. |
C.If he or she ask for an opinion, share your own. |

F.If you don’t understand something, never be afraid to ask. |
G.The more quickly you answer, the more attention you pay. |
4 . Chinese cuisine is widely known and enjoyed all around the world. Who doesn’t long for a favorite Chinese dish? But there is one interesting concept concerning Chinese food which is almost unheard of in the West, and which is becoming increasingly ignored by the youth of the East—the ancient custom of “tonic food”.
Tonic food is food which is consumed to improve one’s well-being or avoid sickness. For instance, it was once the custom for new mothers to eat a sesame oil(麻油) chicken soup every day for the first month after giving birth. It was believed that this dish would benefit the muscles, reduce pain, improve circulation, stimulate sweating, and warm the body. Some foods, such as goat meat and spinach, are seen as “hot”, while others, such as Chinese cabbage and radishes, are seen as “cold”. One should be careful not to eat too much of either “hot” or “cold” food. However, how much “hot” or “cold” food one should eat depends on the time of the year, how the food is prepared and what it is prepared with, and the individual’s health.
The custom of employing tonic food for a healthier life also influences the catering industry. Chinese herbal medicines, such as wolfberry(枸杞子), can be found on many a restaurant menu, either added to fruit tea or as a beneficial addition to a dish. These herbs attract customers, such as overworked office staff, in need of a modest pick-me-up.
So, whether you need to boost your strength with a large helping of chicken soup, or increase your mental powers with a serving of fish soup, you may find that this ancient Chinese custom could be just the tonic you were looking for.
1. What is the present situation of tonic food?A.It is catching less attention. | B.It is enjoyed by many young people. |
C.It is well-known worldwide. | D.It is becoming increasingly popular. |
A.Chinese cabbage. | B.Fruit tea. |
C.Sesame oil chicken soup. | D.Fish soup. |

5 . One summer during high school, my mom volunteered me to help Grandpa research our family tree. It’s terrible to imagine hours spent dusting boxes and listening to boring stories about people I didn’t know. “You’ll be surprised,” my mom promised. “Family history can be very interesting.”
In truth, Grandpa didn’t want to limit(限定) my work to just research, hoping to also keep our family memories. He’d discovered a computer program that helped digitally scan(扫描) old pictures and letters to maintain their contents before they crumble from age. Grandpa wanted me to help him connect the scanner and set up the computer program. He could type documents and send emails, but had never used a scanner.
Soon after, I became interested my relatives’ lives. I asked Grandpa to tell the story behind every picture and letter we scanned. The stories, which turned out not to be boring at all, helped me not only understand but also relate to my relatives. I became so eager for more information that Grandpa needed additional props(道具) to keep me satisfied. He showed me a chest filled with random stuff, all covered in dust.
Looking through their belongings, I felt I was opening a window to the world of my relatives, a world long since gone. Grandpa showed me letters he had sent to Grandma from the front line of World War II and I could almost smell the gunpowder. I turned the pages of my great-grandmother’s recipe book and could picture her cooking in her kitchen. All of the people who had been only names to me now had faces to match.
Later, Grandpa admitted, “I probably could have done this project myself. I just wanted someone to share it with.” I can’t thank him enough for sharing the experience and making me appreciate the family members who have made me who I am.

7 . A hotel that calls itself the world's first "polar bear hotel" has opened in northeastern China. The Polar Bear Hotel is part of the Harbin Polarland amusement park in Harbin, the capital and largest city in Heilongjiang province.
It opened earlier this month and promised that guests would be able to see live polar bears from all 21 guest rooms. "Whether you're eating, playing or sleeping, polar bears will keep you company," Harbin Polarland said in a statement on the WeChat messenger service. Photos and videos from Chinese state media showed people watching two polar bears in a closed, indoor space with artificial ice and small pools of water.
Yang Liu is a spokeswoman for Harbin Polarland. She told Reuters that the indoor area is the only part of the bears' total living space. She said they are also let outdoors when temperature and air quality permits. Liu added there has been "very high" interest in staying at the hotel, where rooms cost from about $ 290 to $ 351 a night.
But some animal rights activists have criticized the hotel. Jason Baker is vice president at animal rights group PETA. He told Reuters, "Polar bears belong in the Arctic, not in zoos or glass boxes in aquariums - and certainly not in hotels." He added, "Polar bears are active for up to 18 hours a day in nature, roaming home ranges that can scan thousands of miles, where they enjoy a real life."
In 2016, a shopping center in the southern city of Cuangzhou drew worldwide criticism after videos showed a polar bear named Pizza lying on her side in a glass-walled area.
Harbin Polarland was established in 2005. It calls itself the world's first polar performing arts amusement park.

8 . Monarch butterflies(黑脉金斑蝶) are a common summer sight in the northern United States and Canada. These large orange and black insects brighten parks and gardens as they fly lightly among the flowers. What makes monarchs particularly interesting is that they migrate—all the way to California or Mexico and back. They are thought to be the only insect that does this.
Every year in the late summer monarchs begin their journey to the south. Those heading for Mexico go first for the Louisiana-Mississippi area, then fly across the Gulf of Mexico into Texas. Once in Mexico, they settle themselves in one of about fifteen places in a mountain forests filled with fir tress. Each place provides a winter home for millions of monarchs. The butterflies are so many that they often cover entire trees. When spring comes, they begin their long journey north.
The question is often asked whether every butterfly makes the round-trip journey every year. And the answer is no. The average monarch lives about nine months. So one flying north might lay eggs in Louisiana and then die. The eggs of that generation may be found in Kentucky; the eggs of the next generation may end up in Wisconsin or Michigan. The last generation of the season, about the fourth, will make their way back to Mexico and restart the journey.
Scientist learn about monarchs’ migration by catching and making marks on the insects. By recatching a monarch with such a mark and noticing where it came from, the next scientist can get to know things like the butterfly’s age and its routing.
1. One of the places where monarchs spend the winter is ________.A.the Gulf of Mexico | B.an area in Mississippi |
C.a forest in Mexico | D.a plain in Texas |
