1 . Twelve-year-old Catherine has a lot of friends—632, actually, if you count up her online friends. And she spends a lot of time with them.
But is it possible that Catherine’s online friendships could be making her lonely? That’s what some experts believe. Connecting online is a great way to stay in touch, they say. However, some experts worry that many kids are so busy connecting online that they might be missing out on true friendships.
Could this be true? During your parents’ childhoods, connecting with friends usually meant spending time with them in the flesh. Kids played Scrabble around a table, not words with friends on their phones. When friends missed each other, they picked up the telephone. Friends might even write letters to each other.
Today, most communication takes place online. A typical teen sends 2,000 texts a month and spends more than 44 hours per week in front of a screen. Much of this time is spent on social media platform.
In fact, in many ways, online communication can make friendships stronger. “There’s definitely a positive influence. Kids can stay in constant contact, which means they can share more of their feelings with each other,” says Katie Davis, co-author of The App Generation.
Other experts, however, warn that too much online communication can get in the way of forming deep friendships. “If we are constantly checking in with our virtual world, we will have little time for our real-world friendships,” says Larry Rosen, a professor at California State University. Rosen also worries that today’s kids might mistake the “friends” on the social media for true friends in life. However, in tough times, you don’t need anyone to like your picture or share your blogs. You need someone who will keep your secrets and hold your hand. You would like to talk face to face.

3 . Workers are quitting their jobs. A lot of them. In fact, there are so many people that it seems that we’re still in the middle of the so-called Great Resignation (辞职). In the US, the Labor Department reported that 4.3 million Americans left their jobs in August 2021, making up about 2.9% of the national workforce — the highest number on record. In the UK, the number of open jobs was more than 1 million for the first time ever in August. There are several reasons why workers are walking away — poor working conditions, fears of getting infected with COVID-19 and a better understanding of life during COVID-19.
You may have heard the story that in the golden age of American labor, 20th-century workers stayed in one job for 40 years and retired with a gold watch. But that’s a total myth. The truth is that people in the 1960s and 1970s quit their jobs more often than they have in the past 20 years, and the economy was better off for it. Since the 1980s Americans have quit less, and many held on to valueless jobs for fear that the safety net wouldn’t support them while they looked for a new one. But Americans seem to have put an end to their persistence (坚持). And they’re being rewarded for their lack of patience: Wages for low-income workers are rising at their fastest rate since the Great Recession (大萧条). In fact, the number of the Great Resignation is really great.
Nearly 7 percent of employees in the “accommodations and food services” area left their jobs in August. That means one in 14 hotel clerks, restaurant servers, and barbacks said goodbye in a single month. Thanks to several pandemic-relief checks, a rent moratorium (缓交), and student-loan forgiveness, everybody, particularly if they are young and have a low income, has more freedom to quit the jobs they hate and hope for something else.
1. Which is one of the reasons why lots of workers are quitting their jobs in the US?A.They find their life meaningless. |
B.They want to get more freedom. |
C.They are afraid of picking up COVID-19. |
D.Their living conditions are very terrible. |
A.Workers quit their jobs more frequently in the 1980s than in the 1960s. |
B.Workers working for 40 years were awarded a gold watch in the 19th century. |
C.All the workers’ wages are rising sharply since the Great Recession in the US. |
D.Workers’ quitting their jobs more often contributed to the economic growth in the 1970s. |
A.Legend. | B.Fact. | C.Secret. | D.Experiment. |
A.The golden age of American labor has gone. |
B.Americans are leaving their jobs in groups. |
C.Young workers are fighting for freedom. |
D.America’s economy is getting worse due to COVID-19. |

6 . You may have recently seen a video from the Beijing Wildlife Zoo going viral(走红). What exactly was so interesting about this video? It shows a dog playing with big cats four to five times its size! Many people might wonder if this dog has a death wish, but it seems that the dog and the big cats are good friends.
The dog was actually raised alongside the lion and tiger cubs(幼兽), making up a strange but loving family, according to zoo officials. If you think this is a bit too wild, just remember that cross-species friendship has been common for centuries. People have domesticated(驯养) many animals, especially cats and dogs, and formed bonds with them as pets. Perhaps you even have a pet yourself.
There are many other examples of cross-species friendships in captivity(圈养). At an animal sanctuary(庇护所) in Santiago Chile, a kitten named Marina and a piglet named Laura formed a friendship after they both came to the park. As neither animal had a mother sanctuary staff said they immediately bonded when they met. Laura had been rescued from a slaughterhouse(屠宰场) while Marina had been rescued from the street.
One possible explanation for these friendships is the environment of the zoo. Animals don’t hunt for their food and don’t need to worry about marking their territory(领地) or looking for mates in the way an animal in the wild would. “All those activities take time and energy, and if these needs are removed, the animals get bored,” Gordon Burghardt, a psychologist at the University of Tenessee, US, told The Atlantic magazine.“ In this particular situation, the animal’s motivation to engage socially and playfully may be higher in its need level than eating.”
Marc Bekoff, former biology professor at the University of Colorado, US, told Slate magazine, “I think the choices animals make in cross-species relationships are the same as they do in same-species relationships. Some dogs don’t like every other dog. Animals are very selective(严格筛选的) about the other individuals who they let into their lives.”

Last Friday, our school held a activity about forest fire prevention. Over 500 teachers and students take part. First, we watched several short video about how forest fires start, how dangerous they can and what to do to prevent them. Then, each class designed their own blackboard newspaper, shown the dangers of forest fires and measures we should take in our daily life to prevent from forest fires. We all thought the activity was meaningfully because it let us realized the importance of forest fire prevention. Besides, they also made us know how to prevent or control forest fires.
8 . I spent all my money buying my first flat — which meant I had no money to fix my first homeowner’s problem. I was very poor. I was sleeping on the floor because I couldn’t afford furniture. Then I noticed a leaky (漏水的) pipe under the bath. I couldn’t afford a plumber (水管工) but didn’t want to introduce myself to the neighbors by making their ceiling wet.
I took the bus to a nearby store and talked with the nice salesclerk behind the counter. He explained how to fix it, let me try it out on some junk they had lying around the place, and sold me a pipe cutter and a bit of pipework. I went back home, pushed my head under the bath, and with a little effort I got the job done.
It taught me a lesson that has since become a bit of a mantra (口头禅) for me: Upgrade your problems.
Having a wet bathroom floor is a problem — and the day before I bought the place, I would have had a landlord (房东) to call. But once the place was mine, this became my problem. I saw this as progress: You must own your own property to take care of this sort of situation.
Years later, when I founded my professional services company, Ovyo, with my business partner, Adam, this mantra became especially important to how we approach the business. There have been many problems, and there will continue to be new ones. However, we remember the reason why we have these problems — it’s because we run our own business! A late-paying customer is a problem, but it’s one we meet only if we have paying customers. A mistake at our Bengaluru office is a problem, but it’s one we meet only because we have office internationally.
That is why I still keep my pipe cutter on my desk today. It reminds me that, no matter my level of failure, I am lucky to face the problems I do. The more I solve them, the more I upgrade to even better ones.
