4 . The act of making and being a friend is as simple as it is difficult. We spoke with experts to help find ways to make new friends, as well as to take better care of the friendships you already have. Here are few of their opinions.
Accept the awkwardness (尴尬) and assume that other people need new friends, too
When you reach out to somebody you don’t know well — whether that’s sending the first text message or making small talk in the elevator — you often feel uncomfortable.
Remember that people will like you more than you think they will
This opinion is based on science called the “liking gap”, which says that the little voice in your head telling you that somebody didn’t like you very much is wrong.
Engage in activities that you love
Ask anyone about how to make friends and they will most likely tell you to try a new hobby. It might sound hollow.
Doing things you are actually interested in will naturally draw people to you because you’ll be in the right place with the right people.
The planet is warming, our news updates are constant, and there’s so much good television out there to watch. We get it. But if you want to keep your friendships alive, you have to be present for them. Listen to and notice things about your friends.

5 . Serama chickens are the smallest in the world, but you really can’t tell by their attitude. Seeing them pose with their head rising and chest sticking out, you’d think they were feathered bodybuilders (健美运动员).
The Serama chicken breed (饲养) can go back all the way to the 1600s, to the Kelantan province of Malaysia, but the current one needs to thank Wee Yean Een, a breeder who made it popular during the 1970s and even gave the chicken the Serama name, after King Rama of Thailand. However, the breed almost died out by the bird flu of the early 2000s. Luckily, they had already been exported to many countries around the world by that point, including the UK, and were able to make a comeback.
Today, Serama chickens are once again booming (兴起), especially in Asian countries like Vietnam, where chicken enthusiasts breed them for posing competitions, where the chickens try to look as pompous (自大) as possible. It actually comes natural to them, as they are known as the athletes of the chicken world, because of their proud pose.
Seramas have a strong body, but it is visually amplified by their athletic pose. They cock their head back and push their large chest out, while lifting one of their legs and shaking their wings. It’s like they’re trying to make up for their small size with their posing.
Serama chicken competitions are popular in countries like Malaysia and Vietnam. They don’t focus on the size of the chickens, but on their pompous pose, walking style and the color of their feather.

6 . As one of the greatest threats to our existence and to the future of our planet, climate change doesn’t just affect one place, but the whole world.
Thus, at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, which just ended, China has again demonstrated its capability and determination to tackle the global challenge of climate change through putting in place innovative and green technologies to protect the environment.
To achieve this great milestone, China engaged about 300 million Chinese in the planning process, activating the spirit of the Olympic motto of “Faster, Higher, Stronger—Together”. Knowing that preparations for the event, such as the construction of venues, roads and other facilities, could lead to an increase in energy use and carbon emissions, the Beijing 2022 organizing committee was determined to carry out carbon reduction measures such as low-carbon venues, energy use and transportation.
First, regarding low-carbon venues (比赛场馆) and infrastructure (基础设施), a total of 550 kilometers of streets along Beijing’s rivers and lakes were rearranged for use by cyclists and pedestrians. Also, a waterfront pathway running 28. 5 kilometers from the capital’s downtown to its Tongzhou district was opened to the public in 2021.
Second, regarding low-carbon energy use, for the first time in Olympics history, 100 percent of the conventional electricity demand of all venues was supplied by renewable energy. The venues relied on the newly built Zhangbei renewable energy flexible direct current power grid in Zhangjiakou and the cross-regional green power trading mechanism.
Third, a low-carbon transportation system was used. The transportation system within the overall Beijing Games zone mainly relied on electric and natural-gas-powered vehicles. In the Yanqing district zone and the Zhangjiakou zone, hydrogen (氢)-fueled vehicles were used. According to the organizers, a total of about 1, 807 hybrid vehicles, over 800 hydrogen-fueled vehicles, nearly 500 natural gas-fueled vehicles and 370 pure electric vehicles were used.
China has showed the world its commitment to giving top priority to ecological conservation. Indeed, the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics provided sustainable initiatives to ensure ecological protection and carbon-neutral Games.

8 . How to Be Happy
Happiness is a great goal to have, and it’s something you’ll need to work toward every day. The following will help you be happy.
Work on improving your weaknesses so you can overcome them. Everyone has weaknesses, so don’t feel bad about yours. If your weaknesses bother you, try to improve them by learning new skills or trying something different.
Express your emotions so they don’t get bottled up. Your feelings are super important, so don’t try to hide them. Ignoring your emotions can actually make them become more intense(激烈的).

9 . Children learn language at a far faster pace than adults. One explanation for this learning advantage comes not from differences between children and adults, but from the differences in the way that people talk to children and adults.
A team of researchers developed a method to experimentally evaluate how parents use what they know about their children’s language when they talk to them. They have found that parents have models of their children’s language knowledge, and use these models to adjust the language they use when speaking to them.
“We have known for years that parents talk to children differently than to other adults in a lot of ways, for example, simplifying their speech and repeating words,” said Daniel Yurovsky, assistant professor in psychology at Carnegie Mellon University. “This helps young kids learn language, but we don’t know whether parents change the way they talk as children are acquiring language.”
Yurovsky adds, “Adults tend to speak to children more slowly. Adults also strengthen their communication with questions to see if children have understood their speech. As the child’s language fluency increases, the sentence structure and complexity (复杂性) used by adults increases.”
Yurovsky and his team wanted to understand exactly how parents adjusted their interactions to match their child’s speech development. The team developed a game where parents helped their children to pick a certain animal from a set of three. Half of the animals in the matching game were animals children typically learn before age two, and the other half were animals that are typically learned later. The researchers asked 41 child-adult pairs to play the game. They measured the differences in how parents talked about animals they thought their children knew as compared to those they thought their children did not know.
The researchers found that the caregiver used various techniques to introduce the unknown animal to the child. The most common approach was to use additional descriptors familiar to the child.
1. Researchers have found parents adjust how they talk to their kids based on ________.A.their own language level | B.the importance of the talk |
C.the closeness of their relationship | D.their kids’ language knowledge |
A.To draw kids’ attention to the talk. | B.To measure kids’ comprehension. |

10 . Since being introduced to chess at the age of six, Tanitoluwa “Tani” Adewumi has had one goal. He wants to become the world’s youngest-ever Grandmaster—the highest title a chess player can achieve. The record is currently held by Russian chess player Alexandrovich Karjakin, who won the title in 2002 at the age of 12.
To work for his goal, the gifted chess player practiced for up to 11 hours every day after school. On May 1, 2021, the now 10-year-old Tani became the newest national chess master of the United States. The title, awarded by the United States Chess Federation (USCF), requires players to get a rating of between 2200 to 2400. Tani achieved a rating of 2223 by defeating two chess experts, a master, and an international master. Tani said the secret to his success was thinking of his plays ahead of time.
The now fifth-grader first knew and fell in love with chess in 2017 after being exposed to the basics by a part-time teacher at school in Manhattan, New York. However, his mother, Oluwatoyin, didn’t let him join the school’s chess club due to the travel and chess competition costs. The family of four, who were living in a homeless shelter, did not have extra money to spare. When Oluwatoyin explained the family’s situation to the chess club’s instructor, Russell Makofsky, he instantly cancelled all costs for the young boy.
Tani did not disappoint those who supported him. Over less than a year after joining the club, he had garnered seven trophies(奖杯)and was ranked 27 in his age category. In 2019, the then eight-year-old, who was still living in a homeless shelter, made national headlines when he defeated 73 competitors to win the New York State Scholastic Chess K-3 Championship. His amazing story caught much attention and a GoFundMe campaign, set up by Makofsky, helped raise enough money for Tani and his family to move into a new home.
