2 . A few weeks ago, my teenage daughter Lisa failed a test. The grade might stop her from qualifying for the next class she wants to take. There were tears and some complaints for a few minutes. Then I saw something interesting. She made a joke, expressed gratitude that she didn’t have bigger problems, and finally made a plan on how to make improvements.
She was never the same as she was one year ago. That one was unwilling to take responsibility. That one stayed in anger and blamed others. We expect our kids to learn and grow. We hope for it. However, most of us grow through adversity (逆境), even trauma (精神创伤). It happened to Lisa last year repeatedly. She searched for ways to get her bearings and equip herself when everything around her was changing by the day. Psychologists call it post-traumatic growth.
Trauma refers to an emotional response to a terrible event like an accident, attack, natural disaster, or other life-changing happenings. The growth after trauma doesn’t mean we get through challenges uninjured. It’s been a scary and painful time, for everyone, in one way or another. We may experience disbelief, depression, and even denial. As time moves on, people who have experienced trauma may have headaches or other physical symptoms, emotional ups and downs, and even relationship problems. Trauma does leave its irremovable marks.
However, in one study, researchers surveyed nearly 385 people who experienced financial difficulty during the pandemic. 88 percent of the people surveyed say they also have experienced some positive outcomes—They now have stronger family relationships and a greater appreciation of life.

B.By quoting a psychologist. |
C.By contrasting a person’s constant changes. |
D.By giving examples together with study results. |
A.It usually comes at a high price. |
B.It produces little negative feelings. |

When Ms. Chow announced the coming “Battle of the Books”, we were so excited. She said, “You’re going to be in teams of three, and you’ll need to set a reading goal for your team. Every team that meets their goal by the end of the month will get a prize!”
That sounded pretty good to me. Wyatt turned to me, saying, “Teammates?”
“Oh, sure!” I said. Wyatt and I liked a lot of the same books, so we could set a goal like reading every graphic novel (漫画小说) in a series.
The lunch bell sounded before Ms. Chow could explain any more rules. Liya came to our desk and said “Teammates?” to Wyatt and me.
“Yeah, teammates!” Wyatt and I answered happily. Liya could read super-fast in both Hindi and English. If we set a goal like reading books by authors from different countries, she could help the team for sure.
Over lunch, we discussed what we needed to do for the contest (竞赛) when Kash came to us.“Do you have ideas for us?”I asked him.
Kash said, “Why would I give you guys ideas? I’ll save them for my team. ”
“Kash, come on, ”I said. “It’s teams of three. Wyatt and Liya said something to me first. If you had, then it would be different. ”
“I see how I rank (属于某等级) in the friendship lineup, ”Kash said angrily, and left.
We were very surprised, but we understood him. The four of us always did things together. I felt the only way to fix this was to allow four people on a team.
So, in the afternoon we went to see Ms. Chow. Guess what? She told us she was going to draw names to assign random groups (随机分配组).
As we walked out of the office, we became silent. We knew even if Ms. Chow had let us form a four-person group, Kash knew we had first teamed up without him. We knew we wouldn’t be able to enjoy any prize if one of our best friends felt bad about being left out. What could we do to clear up this misunderstanding?

6 . For everyone who hates setting their alarm an hour earlier to hit the gym, scientists may have some good news.
Afternoon workouts lead to better outcomes for some people, according to a study published this year. The study, which looked at men who are at risk for or have Type2 diabetes (糖尿病) found that participants who exercised in the afternoon experienced more metabolic (新陈代谢的) benefits as well as more positive effects on their exercise performance and fat mass compared to participants who exercised in the morning.
“Our body has a biological clock and this regulates many processes in the body and these processes have a rhythm,” said Patrick Schrauwen, a professor of metabolic aspects of Type 2 diabetes at Maastricht University in the Netherlands.
“Some of these are well known, like your body temperature and your blood pressure.” Schrauwen said. “Our biological clocks also influence our metabolism and whether our bodies burn fat or carbohydrates at certain times,” he added. And for study participants who were fat or at risk for Type 2 diabetes, those fat-burning processes were more efficient in the afternoon hours. Higher body temperatures in the afternoon may also help improve corporal performance, almost like a built-in daily warm-up.
“When you start to realize how strong this biological clock can be and then if you do the things like food intake on the wrong time of the day, or being active on the wrong time of the day or being inactive at times when you should be active, this can have a major influence.” Schrauwen added. “The good news is that you can also use it for your benefit.”
It can be especially helpful for competitive athletes or people training for a race to exercise in the afternoon of a day. For example, Schrauwen said he worked with a football team that was able to improve their performance by moving practice to the afternoon.
1. What is the good news mentioned in the text?A.People do not need to set their alarm earlier any more. |
B.Exercise in the afternoon is good for all human beings. |
C.The men with Type 2 diabetes can be treated by exercising in the afternoon. |

C.The patients with diabetes burn fat faster. | D.People can do warm-up inside their bodies. |
A.Memorial. | B.Physical. | C.Natural. | D.Mental. |
A.By working with other scientists. | B.By comparing the results from different people. |
C.By trying it with specific groups. | D.By helping participants at risk for diabetes. |
7 . Emotional regulation (情绪管理) is taking any action that changes the intensity of an emotional experience.
Emotions happen fast. We don’t think “now I will be angry” — we just suddenly have fires in our eyes and become extremely angry. So the number one skill in regulating difficult emotions is to pause. Take a breath. Slow down the moment between trigger (触发) and response.
Noticing what you feel
An equally important skill involves the ability to become aware of what you’re feeling. Dr. Judson Brewer, MD Ph. D. recommends practices for becoming more curious about your own physical reactions. In what parts of your body are you noticing feelings? Is your stomach upset? Is your heart racing?
Naming what you feel
After noticing what you feel, the ability to name it can help you get control of what is happening. Ask yourself: What would you call the emotions you’re feeling? Is it anger, sadness, or disappointment?
Accepting the emotion
A.Creating space |
B.Predicting what you feel |
C.It doesn’t mean preventing or avoiding emotions |
D.Emotions come and go so that you barely notice them |
E.Identifying emotions will help you share your feelings with others |
F.Emotions are a normal and natural part of how we respond to situations |
G.Your physical reactions can reflect what you are experiencing emotionally |

10 . In a former gold mine a mile underground, inside a titanium tank(钛储罐)filled with a rare liquified gas, scientists have begun the search for what so far has been unfindable: dark matter.
Scientists are trying to understand why the universe is not what it seems. One part of the mystery is dark matter, which has by far most of the mass in the universe. Astronomers know it’s there even though it’s nowhere to be seen, because when they measure the stars and other regular matter in galaxies, they find that there is not nearly enough gravity to hold them together. If nothing else was out there, galaxies would be quickly flying apart.
The race to solve this enormous mystery has brought one team to the depths under Lead, South Dakota.
The idea is that a mile of dirt and rock, a giant tank, a second tank and the purest titanium in the world will block nearly all the cosmic rays and particles (粒子) around us every day. But dark matter particles, scientists think, can avoid all those obstacles. They hope one will fly into the liquid xenon (疝气) in the inner tank and smash into a xenon nucleus (原子核), revealing its existence in a flash of light seen by a device called “the time projection chamber.”
Scientists announced Thursday that the five-year, $60 million search finally got underway two months ago after a delay caused by the pandemic. So far the device has found...nothing. At least no dark matter.
And if all their calculations and theories are right, they figure they’ll see only a couple signs of dark matter a year. By the time the experiment finishes, the chance of finding dark matter with this device is probably less than 50% but more than 10%.
While that’s far from a sure thing, “you need a little enthusiasm,” said Kevin Lesko, a physicist at Lawrence Berkeley Naonal Laboratory. “You don’t go into rare search physics without some hope of finding something.”
These scientists tried to a similar, smaller experiment here years ago. After coming up empty, they figured they had to go much bigger. Another large-scale experiment is underway in Italy run by a rival team, but no results have been announced so far.
